I've more or less decided to boycott all these Disney remakes. The last one I saw was Beauty and the Beast, and meh.

My wife had a good idea for the Lion King remake. They could've just used no voice actors at all. They could have had these "live action" animals doing everything from the original, and used all the music cues and everything, but there would be no spoken words the entire movie.

It could've been kind of a cool way to do a remake, but it probably would've only made a fraction of the money.

That really is a cool idea, even if it's not good commercially.

Weener and I went to see Rebel Without A Cause on the big screen with a 35MM print yesterday.

It hasn't aged well in a lot of ways.

The take on masculinity is very outdated.

The film tries to show some nuance on how parents fail their kids, but it just doesn't resonate with 2019.

Just about every scene counts tho, there isn't a lot of wasted time, even though it takes its time slowly building the story.

James Dean's acting is very BIG, but he's also great with the bits where he's only using body language and face.

Sal Mineo was pretty incredible as the coded gay kid in love w/ Dean.

Natalie Wood didn't get much to do other than fsr fall in love with Dean's character.

The way they play her need for fatherly approval reeks of incest.

Jim Backus (voice of Mr. Magoo, Mr. Howell from Gilligan's Island) as Dean's whipped father is hard to admire as a character, but he plays him to a T.

The scene at Griffith Observatory, where the school is viewing a planetarium show, is a well done 'poetic' metaphor, even if it's heavy handed today.

The cops in this movie show SO MUCH restraint it's comical.

Yeah, that would have been way more interesting.

I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately cause I signed up for a buncha free streaming trials to see what other services have.

Tonight I got about 16 minutes into Alien VS Predator: Requiem and it was obvious already this is one of the worst movies ever. A fucking cascade of slice of life sub plots to give some exposition on bloated cast of “important” characters.

I’m gonna rewatch Tremors instead haha

i watched the 2013 Evil Dead reboot last night finally. that was an extremely well done remake and i was very entertained. good gore, good scares and tension, good cast. they were very smart about using important elements of the original while still telling a new version of that story.

AvP:R is a very bad movie, but it FULLY commits to the violence that was so lacking in the previous one.  The first 45 minutes are garbage, but once it gets into the action, I had an absolute blast with it.

I agree entirely.  I feel like it's the movie that the original was trying to be.  They were masterful in how they ramped things up.  There was no point at which I got desensitized to what was going on.  I watch it every couple of years.

I believe my quick review Wayback in the day was something to the effect of if felt like the AvP universe crashed a cheesy WB network drama, And yet was even worse than that concept

I like a few things , mostly when they get to the hospital , mostly. But yeah, it probably edges out the predator and covenant for worse in the franchise

AVPR is a small town/teen slasher film where alien and predator wandered in. still a perplexing film in many ways.

wow, i totally forgot about this. in some ways that remake may be a good milemarker for when i started getting sick of gore after spending 2 decades voluntarily drowning myself in it.

we tried to watch AQUAMAN this weekend, i had heard from many people who usually are similar in tastes to myself that it was basically dumb but fun and really cool looking and....we turned it off like 35 minutes in. i cannot explain what bothered my precisely, but the movement and combination of CGI/ cinematography trying to be 'dynamic' or something just looked bad to me. i was honestly relieved when my lady was like 'you know, we dont have to keep this on if you dont want to, i am not into it'

We watched it somewhat recently. It's entertaining enough, IMO. At least it had some light hearted adventure and fun in it, unlike every other modern era DC movie before it.

We also watched Shazam a few weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised. Probably the best modern era DC movie, just for the fact that it has FUN and JOKES and actually feels like something that kids could enjoy. I was really worried with the previews that it would be the same grim dark baloney as every other DC movie, and there are parts of that in there, but it's balanced out by a real light and fun side.

Shazam was really fun, and the kid actors were actually good. A good or bad child actor can really make or break a movie (6th Sense/Phantom Menace). It's too bad it didn't do better. I did enjoy Aquabro well enough, but Shazam and Aquaman would deserve to have their box office grosses swapped in a just universe.
