I don't consider Norma Jean or DEP mathy at all. I don't even consider Norma Jean a band.

No Meshuggah? :(

meshuggah is more on the metal side, which is why i didnt include them.

why are emerson, lake and palmer in your "heavier mathrock" list

listen to tarkus, and then you'll know why. it's heavy as shit.

I don't consider Norma Jean or DEP mathy at all. I don't even consider Norma Jean a band.

i dont either, but i dont have a 'joke-core' directory yet.

plus, as bad as they are, bless the martyrs and kiss the child is very mathy.

...I don't even consider Norma Jean a band.

That's correct - they aren't a band; they're quite possibly the largest black hole ever perceived.

On an extra note: Could somebody please provide me with a solidified definition for "mathrock"? It seems to always be debated, which is fine I guess, but I just want to know.

Needs more spiral Architect. But other than that it's a handy list. You should work on it and give them rating out of five or something. As it is now, it's to big for me to randomly pick ones to listen to.

But might I add a Math Jazz band. "Cast"

Out of those I totally dig:

Behold..the Arctopus
Dysrhythmia
The Dillinger Escape Plan
The Mars Volta
Genghis Tron
Ent
The Fucking champs
HORSE the band
Orthrelm
Mastodon

What do I need to check out?

Also, I'd like to add Cephalic Carnage to the heavier side.

Actually I recently heard the Behold..the Arctopus album. It's effin crazy! Very highly recommended.

Also, anyone interested in Ron Jarzombek should take a look at his new project witht he bass player from Cannibal Corpse and the Drummer for Lamb of God. Check out the videos for some of the song ideas here

Also, For the hevier side check out Gorguts, and Martyr. Very rad and mathy metal bands. Well actually they are more technical than math.

Math being added to the title of the genre usual means technical, yet groove conscious. Download some Botch for my definition of Math.

Then Download some Spiral Architect to get the definition of Technical Metal: Technical for the sake of being technical (a personal fav)

Then Download some Dream Theater for Prog Metal: Technical, yet mellodically driven.

I can attest that the bass player from Cannibal Corpse is a bad ass mother fucker. Dude does fucking tremolo picking WITH HIS FINGERS. Shit is crazy. But only their first 3 albums (MAYBE 4) are worth listening to, in my opinion.

Behold...the Arctopus are really great, if not just because that dude plays that big ass fucking Warr touch guitar (I think it's called?) Plus, you can't beat some At The Gates. Their shit is pretty complex, especially With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness. I've been listening to that lately and that albums all over the damn place.

The reason to listen to Newer Cannibal Corpse albums is for the Production. They are truly the best produced death metal band of all time. I liked Bloodthirst and Gallery of Suicide the very best. Actually, Gallery was wickely technical too.

Pretty sure Psyopus belongs in there somewhere.
And Behold the Arctopus should be in like, every category ever.
