I did some paperwork, and data entry, while I listened to my company gunnery sergeant scream his fool head off.

"We must do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because, according to Malthusian-Darwinian theory, he must justify his right to exist. The true business of people should be to go back to school and think about whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody came along and told them they had to earn a living."

Bad day at work today. First thing I have to do at work is make a very minor change in one of the donation forms that we host. The client had a change in management so all I have to do is go into the code that generates a receipt e-mail and replace the old name with the new one. So I go into the directory using the Linux prompt. I decide to do a string search using the grep command to find the name that I have to change. Simple enough. Only my mind wanders off for a critical split-second in which instead of using the grep command I use rm and WIPE OUT the entire directory I'm working in.

So, a 15 minute job turns into 2 hours of frantic hair-pulling as I restore an outdated backup, which is missing a bunch of key parts that were programmed later, and reading through the archive of support forum posts to track down what had changed since the last backup, and reconstrcting it to (hopefully) the state it was in before I went and blew it all up :(

It really wasn't too much of a critical problem, but it set me off my game for the rest of the day.

I held on to the back of the trailers we use to pull airplane mail containers around on while sliding on the ice.

I fell on my face.

i really wish rm had some sort of undo, or y/n confirmation, or threw stuff in the trash bin or something...

wait a minute, you can't delete directories unless you use -r so you must have really been not paying attention hahahaha

things like that actually make me happy that the school replaced rm with a custom version they made that actually does prompt you to delete something.

I did 15 hours of what seemed like nothing, but really it was all just frustrating random tasks. At least it ended with a pasta dinner and a hug.

Well, this is the command I was supposed to run:

grep 'Name' *

And this is what I did run:

rm 'Name' *

It returned a message saying something about not finding the name, so I didn't even realize that it went ahead and deleted * as well.

I took money from innocent children because their parents can't keep track of their damn books.

Wellllll, technically the county government took money from innocent children, I'm just an agent of the state.

I hate when that shit happens. Thankfully I haven't deleted any real important stuff yet but sometimes I just arbitrarily throw in that * and everything goes straight into the abyss.

The worst is when you want to remove a directory and all of its contents

rm -r <dir>

and you type

rm -r <dir> *

then you lose all directories and files!!

I only did that once, and everything was backed up, luckily.
