I can't even think of a single positive thing involving the CV NES trilogy controls.

I'm no good at most non-metroidvania CV games, but a few months ago I put some solid effort into CVIII. Went from never beating the first level to being able to make it several levels in on most of the paths. I definitely used to loath CV controls because of the rigid clunkiness. But I had a very cathartic realization of how good those games are as I got better. If you are trying to fly through levels in a "twitch" style, it won't work out well. The games are very deliberately paced and are like a slo-mo representation of the "Mario zone"*.

*The "in the zone" type perfection you can achieve by holding right+B and jumping at just the right times.

The exact opposite of floaty controls, which is what Mr. Radd claims to abhor. You're trapped now, Norrin. You must love CV1 and CV3!!!

You guys are all a bunch of huge fucking pussies for crying over Dracula X being too hard.

(sorry, I know this isn't much of an argument, but this discussion has devolved into some serious sillyness at this point)

For real, I was able to make it to the last level in one sitting, it's actually a pretty damn easy game.

Up until the last level and boss, the game is arguably one of the easiest Castlevania games. Last boss with pits can still suck a bag of dicks.

Mikael Akferldt quit Bloodbath

probably because he can't growl anymore

That's not the reason, because he IS still growling. On the Opeth/Mastodon tour, Opeth have specifically chosen songs in which Akerfeldt growls.

Is this truth? I was specifically avoiding the tour because of Heritage... :o

They released the setlist a while ago, it includes songs like The Baying Of The Hounds and Heir Apparent.

Meh :( Why can't they play old stuff anymooooaaarrrr like Orchid and Morningrise and MAYH and Still Life

Will need to see some bootlegs I guess :D

I dunno dude, check out this setlist they had on March 25th of this year.

The Devil's Orchard
I Feel the Dark
Burden
Slither
Harvest
Windowpane
The Lines in My Hand
Folklore
The Drapery Falls
The Grand Conjuration
Deliverance

Encore:
The Lotus Eater

Sounds pretty solid to me!

I'm gunna have to pull a Criss Angel Mind Freak out of this trap!

What floaty controls do I abhor? I really hate the floaty Little Big Planet Controls, but I did really love Mighty Bomb Jack (floatiest controls ever?).

My main concern with the CV controls is that they take away player control. Once you jump, you've jumped, and you are "out of control" for the duration of your flight. The entire game feels like there is a weight pushing down on your guy, and you are just slammed to the floor by gravity. I much prefer the more "analog" control of Zelda 2, where you can inch forward, and slightly change the inertia of your flight path (but not entirely). I also really like the revving up to the full walking speed.

I think the embodiment of good 2D controls is Super Meat Boy.

But if we're talking about loving rigid precise controls, I think Ninja Gaiden or Contra have the CV series beat. Also games I love because of their control.

In summary: At this stage in my life, I can't play NES games with control I do not enjoy. :(

It's true Castlevania control is a bit clunky... but it's a well designed sort of intentional clunkiness.

Norrin, try playing Castlevania adventure on the Gameboy for 5 minutes. Beat the first level. Then go back and play an NES Castlevania. By comparison, you will suddenly feel free and nimble!

You shouldn't have to settle for controls. I agree that the game was designed around the controls adequately. It's just not fun to play, for me.

Just because an NES game is a classic, shouldn't mean it gets a pass.

If you put a butt ton of crusty music in CV, I wonder if it would have had a following. I will definitely agree that the music is fantastic. If you mute the TV though, I would have a hard time wanting to keep playing.

I agree: I appreciate them. But, hey, you're Norrin, and you don't like Crazy Taxi (and hey, I'm Nario, and you all know which games I have a problem with), so we each have our own tastes; I still can't believe you've 1-life'd Silver Surfer, now that I've played it quite a bit.

If you mute the TV though, I would have a hard time wanting to keep playing.

Fair enough! The CV1 Experience just wouldn't be the same without Kinuyo Yamashita.

You said it! I'm just offering a little bit of discussion on the subject. Nothing beats a good discussion about the things we love, here.

I can't talk about the controls in CV with anyone else I know irl, haha.

Ok, so what I said earlier about Dracula X was from memory. I played it yesterday in the first time in forever and I didn't think the controls were that bad, so I take that back. One complaint: YOU CAN'T NOT CATCH THE CROSS. This pissed me off. I kneeled down to let it hit a dude behind me and I still caught it. WHAT THE...

You guys hatin' on the NES Castlevania's are WHACKTAFIED. Pro-tip: In Castlevania III, if you hold down the B button while you're on a set of steps--TURBO WHIP.

I wasn't comparing CV and GnG, by the way. I was just giving another example of a game that has a reputation as being awkward and unfriendly, but which probably wouldn't be anywhere near as enduring or interesting if you changed its mechanics. ;)

Got a hell of a chesty cough today. I think there's something trying to get out.
