Arch rivals is REALLY fun with 2 people.

But seriously, I was a kid when Mortal Kombat came out. Then when MKII came out, I was completely blown away, and its impression is with me forever. It's not nearly as fun to me now as it used to be, but in my mind it's still the ultimate fighting game. MKIII is also cool, I'll probably buy it for DS.

Other than those and smash bros, I'm not really into fighting games. I've always especially disliked 3D fighting games.

Eric Dude thinks Smash Brothers is not a fighting game.

show him karate of opinion.

Smash Bros. is a multi-player party game. It is a game where (usually) 4 players beat the hell out of each other with crazy items, and knock each other off of platforms. I still remember me and Spook p-shawing at the thought of the MAGfest Smash Bros tourney: One on One, no items. Yeah, you know what that leaves you with? A shitty game.

Bah, i forgot to mention KI, i will go shoot myself now.

I used to spend a SHITLOAD of time playing KI with my friends on SNES.
One time we did 15 hours straight run.
And i was somewhat good at it too.
Orchid, Sabrewulf, Fulgore and Cinder were my weapons. i was best with Fulgore.

That's so fucking not true :o
Multiplayer party game where you beat the crap out of each-other is considering it's like a Mario Party mini-game. I will never agree with that.

For me it is a fighter, in a different way. Removing the items, making it one on one, and putting a stage like Final Destination is further making it like any fighting game. Good ol 1vs1 on a flat stage. Theres alot of techs and strategies and combos to learn and master. But I seriously think there are 2 types of people playing it, those taking it as a party game and those taking it as a fighting game. I take it pretty seriously and I consider it a big huge motherfucking fighting game that's uber well balanced. And innovative.

I hope there will be that MAG Smash bros tourney :)

Yeah, I'm just glad that I'm not on the side that argues it's a 'big huge motherfucking fighting game'. I'm not even sure what's that supposed to convince me of. Anyway, if you strip the game down to those parameters, it's fairly simplistic and mediocre. And still not very similar to everything else we consider a 'fighting game'.

The "Does Smash Bros qualify as a fighting game?" argument is so tired by now, but I have to agree that it is not in its purest sense a "fighting" game. Like Eric Dude said, the only way Smash Bros is even accepted within tournaments is by modifying the hell out of the game's rules to allow one on one and all sorts of other restraints.

i always thought Star Gladiator for PS1 was an immensely enjoyable fighting game. the sequel for Dreamcast isn't all that great, but I have a real soft spot for the original.

the other fighters i really got into:
- Street Fighter II Championship Edition (only ever had the Genesis version, but its perfect with the 6 button pad)
- X-Men Vs Street Fighter
- Marvel Vs Capcom
- Marvel Vs Capcom 2
- Pocket Fighter (way too simple, but pretty amusing nonetheless)
- Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha (never tried the sequels, but this one was half decent)
- Match of the Millenium: SNK Vs Capcom (and really, all the fighters for Neo Geo Pocket Color)
- Street Fighter III (though i'm pretty terrible at it)
- Power Stone 1/2
- Soul Blade
- Soul Calibur (still probably my favorite fighter)
- Soul Calibur 2
- Tekken 3 (only Tekken I got really interested in due to the bevy of extras and some really fun characters)
- Tobal No. 1
- Tobal 2 (awesome game, power system was awesome, just wish i could understand the RPG mode)
- Ehrgiez (need to buy this game again, i really enjoyed it)
- Bushido Blade 1 (and 2 to a certain extent...always liked 1 more for some reason though)
- DOA2 was pretty fun for PS2 and Dreamcast.

Exceptions:
- i think i've given mortal kombat a try for every game from 1 to UMK3 and Trilogy, and I just can't say it's a favorite series. The more recent ones are eh.
- i cant get into virtua fighter (1, 2, 3, 4...) no matter how hard i try.
- never liked the one Capcom Vs SNK console game i played. maybe the others are better?
- i like the idea of smash brothers but i dont like playing it all that much. though I felt Melee was a much better game than the first. i'll still throw down once in awhile.
- the first Dynasty Warriors game for PS1 was a total Soul Blade knockoff, and it wasn't very good.
- didnt get into the SF Alpha series too much. the second one i spent some time with, and it was alright.
- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure had some amusing stuff, but i felt it was a pretty lackluster game.
- if you want a really terrible 3D fighter, track down AD&D Iron and Blood (i think that's the name?) for PS1. awful.
- Killer Instinct - always found this unfun/unplayable.
- Clayfighter 2 - for some reason, i still own this. a living testament to misusing your money at a young age, i suppose.

And here's the stuff I'm interested in playing/obtaining:
- Soul Calibur 3 (it's gotta be cheap by now...)
- Tech Romancer (sad that i missed this one when it came out)
- Rival Schools games (had the first one briefly before it was stolen with all my other PS1 stuff)
- Fighting Vipers (bought this a few months ago for $1, want to give it a try eventually)
- Fighter's Megamix (probably way too expensive now)
- Destrega (had a demo for this on PS1, it was a really cool free roaming fighting game with projectiles and different elevations)
- Darkstalkers series (i have Night Warriors and Darkstalkers 3 now...i really need to give the series more of a chance)
- Bloody Roar (i only had a demo of the first but it seemed pretty fun...cant speak for the rest of the series)

this used to be my favorite genre, but my passion died a bit with the demise of the dreamcast. not to mention there's just less fighting games coming out anymore. you have tekken, virtua fighter, soul calibur, and MK that come out semi regularly and not much beyond that it seems.

Oh man ! I was on my way home and I thought of this. You beat me to it !

I really need to get this game again. It's not the best game ever but it's a crapload of fun , simple, everyone has almost the same moves but it's sooooo fun. If you find an extra copy , tell me X_X

Killer Instinct, Primal Rage, SF Alpha 3, Bloody Roar and others are extremely awesome, but for me, the number 1 fighter is a tossup between:

Street Fighter II Turbo - The classic game that started it all for me, the be all end all of awesome fighting for its time. Fuck Mortal Kombat.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - The most complex and fast and amazing 2d fighter I've ever played, which I would love to someday purchase the arcade cabinet for

and Guilty Gear X2 - The most origional fighter I've ever played, which I applaud for having characters which each control extremely different and yet the game is still very balanced and very fun.

Ah, fighers. so much fun. so much frustration. So many memories.

SNK makes the best fighting games, but CVS2 is the best one because it had a perfect combination of both Capcom and SNK.

I think the King of Fighters with the new sprites is going to be the best though.

I remember beating both 1 and 2 in the arcade by just button mashing

- Power Stone 1/2

If no one is going to argue this then Smash Bros. automatically is a fighting game, I don't see what the big deal about calling Smash Bros. a fighting game is. I mean, you fight people. The primary gameplay element is fighting. You use various attacks and weapons to fight opponents. You can block the attacks from the enemies that are fighting you. You can throw enemies that you are fighting. Victory comes when you have fought your enem(y/ies) to the point that they are no longer capable of fighting.

Now what part of it isn't fighting?

Smash Bros. is the only
Spoiler
game I've ever really gotten into. The only other game in this genre I've spent some time with is the Mortal Kombats, and, well, they're not really that great. I completely agree with raubhimself with this, like, you fight people. The genre is called "fighting." Am I missing something here?

Smash Bros. is GREAT, fighting game or otherwise.
