5- that adult book/video store on Mcdowell west of Grand ave that is also a laundromat

Oh snap. I used to drive by that place everyday for practice. I went in one time because it said "Deli/Food" on the sign....It was a fucking vending machine. And among a few "food" items, it had condoms in it.

There's a giant hobo statue in Buckeye!

That exterminator statue, the one w/ a mallet that looks sort of like the "spy vs. spy" characters.
I think its on 16th st or 24th, north of VanBuren.
Anyone remember what company its for?

This place is gone:

Hunts Tumb (in Papago Park, is pretty weird--a pyramid for cryn-out-loud.

The Log Cabin Inn on VanBuren (might be bulldozed, I haven't been down in a week or 2)

Holbrook has the wigwam hotel.

Gila bend has one that looks like a spaceship.

VanBuren also used to have a muffler man, but the fuckers got that about 6 months ago.

Does The Thing count?

Worlds Largest KokoPelli, I-17 in Camp Verde.

Off highway 74 there's a big rock painted like a skull.

. . . sorry, I guess a lot of these are outside PHX.
I live for this stuff, want to go on a photo hunt?!

there's an office building - i believe it's on central - that is about 10 stories high and it's all white and has very oddly spaced windows. i was told it was designed to look like one of those old mainframe computer punchcards, and the architect spaced the windows so that it would spell his name. or something like that.

does that count?

also, is there any old school mainframe punch card computer wizard that can confirm or deny this rumor?

Emperors of Japan
Myspace

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

i love that video! how fun, as if you could like morrissey any more..... :)

verrado is weird - and I did see the B52s play a free show in verrado and it was still weird (but they did a good show). It's very planned and they really push the whole community thing but it's just a place for people that are scared to live in a real community so they build one out in the boonies so it's "safe" but their kids are the ones who cause all the trouble because they are bored. my parents live in a "community" out in Goodyear in "Estrella Mountain Ranch" - my mom said everyone is freaked out because a Basha's is coming in, and everyone thinks this will cause crime!!!!!
that's weird :D

i would love to go on a photo hunt!!! i am going to take photos for the article.....

i love all those motels on van buren they are soo cool. my dream is buy one and turn it into a kitchy 50s-60s retro hotel........a girl can dream...

these are all good ideas! more stuff! more stuff!

the only thing weird about Phoenix is that it's completely devoid of weirdness - so, in a sense, everywhere could be included in yr. list - i guess the overwhelming number of Circle Ks and Walgreens is the weirdest thing by far - you should document that - or count how many goddamn piece of shit yuppie condos are being constructed for budding entrepreneurs - jesus christ, when yr. list is struggling to break a dozen in one of the biggest cities in America, something is DEADLY wrong - Phoenix died so long ago and the stinking corpse continues to rot - where has love gone? - into whose hands has the power succeeded? - these are questions that can only sadden one when answered - how about everyone on this board breaks off and starts a new community? - THAT would be fucking WEIRD! - don't mean to offend anyone - the truth hurts - a lot - i lived in PHX for 10 years and i just don't see anything changing for the better - i guess you have to make anywhere you are home - i am sorry -

I have also heard that it was built to look like a computer punchcard, which was very cutting-edge technology at the time and thus a very futuristic look for a building. I hadn't heard about it spelling the architect's name, it would be interesting to find out if that's true.

other weird things:

- there is that house on 15th ave, just north of the Bikini that has these columns with lions on top in their front yard. it reminds of Mario Bros 3 - the final castle with the columns that shoot lasers out. i love that house

- that large church downtown that has no roof

- sun city

- that sign in scottsdale of the teddy bear holding a machine gun

saw a couple of things on my way to work.

7th st. north of osborn 'schreiner's sausage' with "sausage varieties" ... unfortunate advertising?

7st. about 1/4 mile south of Indian School there is a banquet hall on the left with a weird angel statue on it. not really that weird but i've wondered what that angel had to do with a banquet hall.
of course the church of scientology is across the street .. that's it's own weird universe i guess if you actually were able to get inside.
