Come on, people! It's close enough to see on a dark night, and we've put some freakin' robots on it already so we can totally do it! What's the hold up? And moon bases! We need a damn moon base! And why the hell isn't there an orbiting space hotel yet? We were supposed to have all this shit by 2001! Seriously, guys! We are running behind schedule, people!

Seriously...

At least Asimov had the sense to give humanity some 12,000 years to achieve galactic dominance. I guess some of his robotics stuff takes place in the late 90's... but still, he didn't promise too much!

<edit> damn, trying to figure out the Asimov timeline... the 12,000 I referred to was 12,000 GE, from Foundation. Which apparently 0 GE is about 32,000 CE/AD

The thing that gets me is there hasn't even been a moon mission since the 70's, even though our technology is far more advanced than what they were using.

The thing with moon missions is that we can't really get much from them. Originally it was just to prove we could do it, then we got rock samples... what else do we need to know about the moon? It's rocky, has no atmosphere, has low gravity... not suitable for life and probably doesn't have much else. Recent studies show it may be rich in hydrogen or something, but that's more of a commercial, not scientific application.

The only thing beneficial that I can really think of is just trying to get us there faster, but every other rocket is a test for this as well.

Check this out: http://en.wikipedia...._outpost_(NASA)

There are some planned missions to make outposts on the moon, and to travel to mars.

The moon is made of different stuff than the Earth, so it's likely that the moon's geological resources may be useful to us Terrans. For example, it's got a lot of Helium-3, which will be useful for fusion reactors in the future. Plus a lot of silicon, but I'm not sure if we have any kind of urgent silicon shortage in the near future.

If a permanent moon base could be set up, they could manufacture rockets there and launch from the moon's much smaller gravity to save on fuel - this would likely be how Mars missions would be handled. Plus there's no atmosphere on the moon so any telescope set up there would have a better image than anything from Earth.

Ahahahaha choice. I can so hear Arnold saying that right now - I need to watch Total Recall again soon.

As for everything else being slowpokey - I blame Bush. He said we were going to Mars, bitches, and we aren't there yet. :(

As for the telescope, we do have Hubble, but I haven't been keeping up with whether the project is going to continue or if it's going to be decommissioned.

Well, you can't just go to Mars overnight. Bush's plan was actually a series of missions leading up to sending someone to Mars, which probably won't happen for at least another 15 years maybe.

A lot of it is budget, I think. I mean, there are so many problems on Earth that we can't give space our all.

Hubble has been... recommissioned? There's some repairs and upgrades scheduled for it.

X-Mark, I agree with you, definitely. But a lot of that stuff was fairly recently discovered, or realized as useful. So as far as the perspective from back in the 70's and 80's goes, we did what we could and kind of hit a wall. Plus the space race turned into the cold war, and launching people to the moon could be deemed suspicious, I suppose.

And as Ryan said, lots of red tape to get through.
