I'm putting together a big compilation rar (looking to fill up a 700 MB CD-R) of NES music. While I'm familiar with a lot of games, I'm afraid more than a few will slip under my radar. For example, it was until recently that I became aware of the dope Boss Theme that's in Metal Max (I never played the game). I want to put just as much lesser known NES music on this rar as well as the known stuff. So if you dudes could name your best recommendations, that would be all kinds of awesome. When it's finished I'll post the rar here.

I even found some nice artwork at Deviant art to tag it with:

Going through the NSF collection to see what obscure stuff I remember (and randomly clicking on some other names), give a listen to these songs:

Ganbare Goemon 2 - track 8
Konami Hyper Soccer - tracks 1, 6
Madara - most songs, you probably know this one already though
(Digital Devil Saga) Megami Tensei 2 - tracks 6, 7, (tracks 8, 15 are ripe for covering) (the first Megami Tensei has many of the same songs without the N106 chip btw)
Mitsume Ga Tooru - many songs, I think Norrin mentioned this one awhile back
Metal Max - tracks 6 and 9 (not sure which song is the boss theme)
Mighty Final Fight - many songs
Otaku no Seiza - track 2 (some of the songs have an Ys-ish quality to them btw)
Zombie Nation - track 2
Exciting Soccer Konami Cup - tracks 1, 2

If some of the games don't seem to have NSF's, that means you are using the Akumu archive. This list predates the akumu archive by a a couple years, so they may be under their japanese names, if there is an american version. Here is a list of all the NES games (or most of), and their alternate aliases. Just ctrl+f and search for the name on my list to see if there is an amaerican version or vice versa, then grab it from the Akumu Archive.

Wow, I'm not reading through all that to double-check if Maniac Mansion, Deja Vu, Shadowgate and Uninvited are in the list. Way to win the thread though, Norrin.

Also Kage/Blue Shadow/Shadow of the Ninja. And Battletoads. And Crystalis. And Super C. And Contra Force.

Fuck it, I'm not trying to be here all night.

i think if youre going to do a 'best of nes music' you should consider including some of those nsf retracked un squadron songs. boss 5, boss 9, thats the shit.

i dont want to give any suggestions for this thread because theres been so much good stuff so far and still missing so much, so i'll just say, some un squadron regardless of whether its for nes or not, theres nsf of it..

Hmm. I could probably go on and on like others here. :D

I'll try my best to organize some of my favorites by trends I've noticed in sound or some other connection-
skip all the text if tl;dr, but I've been wanting to do a sort of in depth look at NES music and this can be my first draft. ;)

Euro-style NES music:

A lot of NES music from the European scene made heavy use of the arpeggio effect. This is almost certainly because of the immense popularity of the C64, and composers had interest in achieving something more comparable to what they were familiar with hearing from the sid chip. Additionally, you can often find the triangle wave using the speed-pitch effect to create thicker percussive sounds, as opposed to relying on DPCM as much.

Often these compositions are a bit longer than your average shorter looping Mega Man / Castlevania-eque track, but that's not always the case. The compositional style varies- some of these are groovy, others are 'proggy' with ripping fast melodies, and some are even atmospheric.

Not every arpeggio-soaked NES track sounds good, in fact I find that some are hard to stomach because of this (see: most of camerica's soundtracks). Some are, however, completely awesome:

Alien 3 (Jeroen Tel - 1993)
Tracks 1, 8

Asterix (Alberto Gonzales - 1993)
Tracks 4, 7, 11

Hero Quest (Neil Baldwin - Unreleased)
Tracks 1, 5

Overlord (Jeroen Tel - 1993)
Tracks 1, 7, 8

Silver Surfer (Tim Follin - 1990)
Tracks 1, 6

Smurfs, The (Alberto Gonzales - 1994)
Tracks 1, 9, 13

Solstice (Tim Follin - 1990)
Track 6

Treasure Master (Tim Follin - 1991)
Tracks 2, 3, 6

Wolverine (Geoff Follin - 1991)
Track 1

Soundtracks With Pitched, Melodic Samples:

The DPCM channel allows samples to be played back at one of 16 available pitches, however, there is good reason that this channel was most often reserved for percussion. Not even considering the extra cost of space needed for samples, sequencing and composing melodic parts this way must have been a total logistical nightmare for some- from working samples within a smaller range (because the lower pitches available would slow the sample down too much and make the note sound like a distorted mess), to knowing what starting pitches you need (to allow for accidentals or notes that can't be reached from repitching the original sample), to a complicated table of which notes will wind up either too flat or too sharp (which can be seen here), it's easy to understand why an extreme minority of games pursued this option.

Sunsoft is recognized for their unique sounding 'Sunsoft bass'. Some of my favorite selections using pitched samples are the following-

Batman - Return of the Joker (Sunsoft - 1991)
Tracks 4, 9

Fester's Quest (Sunsoft - 1989)
Track 4

Fire 'N Ice / Solomon's Key 2 (Tecmo 1993)
Tracks 7, 16

Hebereke / Uforia (Sunsoft - 1991)
Tracks 3, 10

Journey to Silius (Sunsoft - 1990)
Tracks 2, 4, 6, 12

Zombie Nation (Meldac - 1990)
Tracks 2, 7, 17

This is such a tall order and I could make a big list too, but Bucky has such awesome taste in nsfs I don't feel the need to.

I currently downloaded a torrent that was called "the best of nintendo music" or something and it was horrid. It had only a few obscure tracks, but it even had smb overworld.

I mean CMON.

If we got an awesome collection going we should definitely start a torrent.

Sound Expansion + FDS:

yadda yadda yadda, I'll fill this in later.

Akumajou Densetsu / Castlevania III (J) (VRC6 - Konami - 1989)
Tracks 23+1, 3, 9, 11, 12, 14, 17+18, 20, 22, 24, 25

Guess it doesn't really need to be said but A+ soundtrack.

Arumana no Kiseki (FDS - Konami - 1987)
Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6

Falsion (FDS - Konami - 1987)
Tracks 2, 7, 10

Gimmick! (FME-07 - Sunsoft - 1992)
Tracks 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 18, 19

Easily another placeholder in my hypothetical top 10 list. :)

Just Breed (MMC5 - Enix - 1992)
Track 4

Lagrange Point (VRC7 - Konami 1991)
Tracks 3, 4, 15, 24

Madara / Mouryou Senki Madara (VRC6 - Konami - 1990)
Tracks 2, 7, 15, 19, 20, 21

Megami Tensei 2 (N106 - Namco - 1990)
Tracks 1, 4, 6, 11, 21, 33

Metal Slader Glory (MMC5 - HAL - 1991)
Track 8

Zelda no Densetsu / Legend of Zelda (J) - (FDS - Nintendo - 1986)

I'm still sinking my teeth into some of Norrin's suggestions I'm not familiar with...

so far,

Kujaku Ou 2 (whole thing is good):

1
2
4
6
7
8

I thought 4, 6, and 8 were pretty cool!

And Deep Dungeon 4 track 1 is indeed GREAT. Doesn't matter that it's so short.
