I might as well start this thread! I haven't really started any quality threads, maybe this is my chance!
(If I beat LuketheXjesse to it)

OKAY SO. Favorite Castlevania game anyone? Discuss!

Probably SOTN I guess. I've never beaten any of CV 1-4 but I've beaten almost all the Metroidvanias.

I'm sure we've had plenty of these, mate. My faves are Akumajou Densetsu and CV4, for sure. Gushings may come later.

My favorite is Super Castlevania IV. The atmosphere is really thick with this one, and the soundtrack (not that this is much of a stretch for the series) is phenomenal. The sounds of the SNES continue to amaze me to this day.

Also, I'd be VERY surprised if there isn't already multiple CV appresh threads, but it ain't no thang.

I can't remember my choices from the fave cv game/fave cv soundtrack threads, so my tastes may have changed since then.
I think CV4 is the best traditional, and favorite "metroidvania" would probably be Circle of the Moon although I really liked Portrait of Ruin as well. I fell in love with SotN when i rented it but I never got obsessed with it like everyone else. But it's a classic for sure, and helped reimagine the 2d mold. On the other side I never bothered with the 3d ones, and I know I always get hell for this but I still think the original trilogy had average game play with clunky controls and were only saved by amazing soundtracks.

Best Metroidvania is Circle of the Moon def. Castlevania 1, 3, and 4 are all awesome, but I'd have to give them all a little more love first before I decide which is my fave.

I haven't tried 2 yet.

For the classic style Castlevania games, I gotta go with Rondo of Blood. I didn't get a chance to play it til a couple years ago, and I'd heard it built up as one of the greatest games ever for ten years or so before then, so I figured going into it that I would most likely be somewhat disappointed or view it as being kind of overrated. But it's not. It's the perfect combination of all the ideas that make CV 1-4 great, plus some new shit. It controls great, the music is amazing, the graphics are excellent (obviously since almost every 2D CV game since has reused the shit out of them), the level design is some of the best in the series...It's just fucking rad.

As for Metroidvania, I dunno. I still haven't beaten SotN because the inverted castle makes me dizzy and gives me a headache, and the only GBA one I played was CotM. I finished all three DS ones and I think PoR was probably my favorite. OoE was also nice because it seemed to be a mix of Simon's Quest and Metroidvania, which was a welcome change.

Fuck the 3D games. I don't care what anyone says, the N64 games are fine games but they're not Castlevania games. There are some games that can translate well to 3D. But to me a big part of the Castlevania series is the 2D platform action gameplay. It just doesn't work as a 3D game.

I can't seem to get past the second level on either Castlevania or Castlevania III. :(

I've been wanting to get into the series, but I feel as though I must start with the NES titles, just like with Mega Man.

Any tips to give to poor ole' Nario? He seems to fall into pits and die from Medusa Heads a lot.

Every single non PS2 Castlevania game has something wonderful about it and I wouldn't be able to pick a "best" or "favourite" one. Though, CV1-4 and Bloodlines+Rondo+x68000, along with the original GB games... best. But if I had to pick the one I like PLAYING the most, it would be x68000, it has some of the best graphics, the best music, and it's still the most challenging game in the series (aside from Haunted Castle which sucks donkey nuts but still rocks).

So to hell with picking a favourite, enjoy them all and lead a happier life.

I always neglect to mention X68000, for some reason. It's easily one of the best and most memorable.

Medusa heads are pretty easy. Just watch them and time your response. They only have like two or three patterns I think, with some practice you'll figure out the timing so that you can just march through and have them fly above or under you, or jump over them. To me, it's usually not worth it to try to kill them.

Also you can use the Medusa heads to your advantage at times. There is a room in level 2 of CV1 where you enter from below and there are a bunch of platforms you have to jump across to get to the ones up top. Normally you'd go left to right, and then back left on the higher bunch of platforms. Fuck that. Go to like the third or fourth platform (can't remember which, but it's obvious), and time your jump so that a Medusa hits you and knocks you to the top platform. There is a turkey leg in the next room anyway. Little things like that.

Harmony of Dissonance is my Metroidvania of choice, with Circle of the Moon being a close second. Can't really say much for the older games, haven't really given them a fair playthrough yet.

I recommend Dracula X Chronicles on PSP to anyone who wants to experience Rondo. It has the original along with SotN, you just have to unlock em. Probably the best value in general (if the GBA double pack were a trilogy that included CotM then that would be the best).
