Droid is great. Best app is the megan fox soundboard.

What all does rooting a droid allow you to do?

you root your phone, you can run custom roms, that are usually better than the stock ones. You can overclock, you can read cpu temperature, you can read/write/modify system files that you couldn't before, which allows for more customization.

if you are truly curious, you should check out droidforums or droidmod.org

Paging raub and xandrain

Dr. Xandraiin here and I love the Android OS:

I own a rooted Motorola Droid running Bugless Beauty, but am pretty sure I need to flash to something else.

I don't use anything crazy in terms of apps. I love Handcent, Chordbot (let's me try progressions), and Last.FM.
Twidroid is pretty wicked, too.

2.1's media gallery is absolute pwn as well.

I've been using nesdroid for NES emulation. It's pretty awesome. Controlling using the G1 keyboard isn't that great, but for RPGs that don't require a lot of button mashing it works fine. I just started up FF1 and Ultima IV. Perfect for extended bathroom breaks at work.

There's an SNES one too (snesdroid) that I just downloaded. I haven't used it yet but I hear it's just as good.

I've tried some of those emulators and they work decently.

I had to uninstall it though because for some reason it ran constantly taking up tons of battery and keeping the phone hot.

Hmm I'm thinking rooting my Droid will be more trouble than it's really worth to me.

Do you Droid owners use a shell case on yours? The dude that sold it to me basically insisted that I needed it so I was all oh ok about it. But the shell is annoying as hell. Makes it hard to fit in my pockets and also makes it hard to use the keyboard. But, I do use it as an mp3 player in my car so it's nice having some rubber to keep it from sliding. I don't have the comprehensive insurance on it because in my history of cell phone ownage I have dropped my phones maybe 6 times total and I don't like paying almost the price of the phone for something I'll never use. I guess I should just take it off but I'm wondering what you guys think.

Actually, rooting right now is as simple as downloading the APK from droidmod.org, running it, clicking "Yes, yes, yes, ok, install" and it does all the work for you. It also gives you the option of choosing which apps you want

I do use a hard case, because I don't want to scratch my expensive phone.

I use a rubber shell case. But it makes the phone seem huge. It's like night and day when it's off. I'm taking it off and just getting a leather pouch case when I get a chance.

Regarding cases: I think the hard/rubber cases are way too bulky so I don't use them. I do, however, use these guys: http://www.bestskinsever.com

They won't protect it from falls, but it will do a damn fine job of protecting it from scratches. You can get ones that cover the entire phone, too, if you're concerned about that. I'd recommend buying a few, though, because they do start to peel after a while.

I got a motorola droid for christmas and have really enjoyed it. I grabbed the nesoid, snesoid, gboid etx apps and they run pretty well for any slower paced games, and help pass the time. There are a lot of fun apps to mess around with but none that I really find useful. I think I am just a boring individual though

Seeing how many of you have rooted your phone makes me feel more comfortable about giving it a shot though!

im writing this from the carribean on a cruise at 75 cents per min to say that this band sucks.

Shut the fuck up. I did get behind their instruments and played what they do. It was easy and generic as fuck. I'm playing for thousands of people on friday. This band sucks it's official.

Musicians should check out gStrings. REALLY good tuner that can be optimized for a few different instruments.

I've been trying to find a good chord reference, and I donwloaded RipChord but it sucks. It literally has every possible way you can play a chord in any given position, which can be like 30 ways to play an open A chord. Plus it only has 4 variations: Maj, min, sus2 (I think), and min7. And no sounds either.

Here are a few apps I've found to be legitimately useful:

Note Everything - Basic notepad app. Great when you don't have a pen/paper.

Places Directory - For finding stuff when you're on the road.

Fandango - There's lots of apps that list movies playing, but you can actually purchase tix with this one.

cab4me - when you're drunk in a strange city, it's a life saver.

Compass - It's a simple one, but man did it save my ass when trying to find my way around on a trip to London & Paris recently.

Color Flashlight - Because sometimes it's dark.

Google Voice - Translates your voicemails to text. Inaccuracy makes it not so useful for important or detailed messages, but very useful for the "Hey bro it's me call me back" messages. Also good for a few laughs.
