Been getting more and more into prog rock.
Last two albums I listened to:
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound

Does anybody have any suggestions for a relative newcomer to this awesome genre?

these hilary clinton-looking women must be pressing their buttholes right up against the sides of the stall and letting it rip.

STARCASTLE!

At first glance they will appear to be a Yes clone, but in actuality, they are nothing like Yes. Tonally, there are some similarities in the vocals (especially on the first album) but they are more like the Follin Brothers than they are like Yes. So much energy and positivity. Easily one of my favourite prog groups. Just listen to the bass playing. So infectious!

Yes, you picked two great albums to start with! If you go back in this thread, you'll find lots of recommendations. I'd suggest:

King Crimson: In the Court of the Crimson King, Red, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Discipline
Genesis: Live, Foxtrot (Gabriel era), Wind & Wuthering, Three Sides Live (Collins era)
Yes: Fragile, Relayer
Anglagard: Hybris, Epilog (relatively modern prog done with "classic" instrumentation)
Rush: Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures
Locanda delle Fate: Forse le lucciole non si amano piu

That should be enough to get you started. :)

EDIT:

Wait .. what?? Okay, I need to check this stuff out then. :)

Seriously. I was completely unaware of how good this band is. This song is currently melting my heart\brain\face. In true prog fashion, it really builds up toward the middle and end. Such a great combo of keyboard with guitars, bass and drums. Just a gorgeous track.

A couple weeks back, I went to this progressive rock fest in pennsylvania called RoSFest (rites of spring festival). It was awesome, and all of you are coming next year.

Who played? I haven't gone to a prog fest since Nearfest '03 (Camel  Anglagard  Magma ). I'm a little skeptical about Rosfest, because they seem to focus on the Flower Kings side of the modern prog scene that I can't really get into.

And yeah, I knew Saga was good. :) Just haven't gotten around to actually listening to them. I have Worlds Apart on vinyl, but I haven't listened to it in years.

I'm trying to remember the name of a prog band. I keep thinking Cassiopeia, but I don't think that's it. They may be from Brazil? (or they just played there in a clip I saw?) Um...any ideas?

The only bands I got to see were tinyfish (featuring jem godfrey's (frost) brother) and moon safari. I was totally there for moon safari. I don't know enough prog bands, but phideaux and district 97 were also there. District 97 is heavier.

I think I heard some of Phideaux and I liked it. I always get him/them coinfused with Beardfish though, so maybe I haven't heard him/them (but I know I liked Beardfish). Whatevs.

i know it was said previously that Frost*'s second album ain't all that, but damned if i didn't really enjoy it. you just can't go into it expecting it to be milliontown pt.2, because it's very different.

also tinyfish is one of my favourite acts out of the UK. Big Red Spark was a fantastic album.

Just found this thread, so I'll have to go through and check out what everyone's posted, but YAY PROG

I kinda always assumed we had a lot of prog nerds here, between the guitar wanking on DoD entries and the needlessly long thread about Portnoy leaving DT. :P

That said, I'll have a big ass announcement to make in this thread within the next couple days. Whether I'm announcing the existence of a large posterior or employing such a thing to make said announcement will remain to be seen.

edit: and just so I'm not left out of the prog-posting fun, let's play the SOUDOU'S FAVORITE MODERN PROG BANDS YOU MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF GAME:

^THIS ALBUM IS FUCKING AMAZING FIND IT NOW I COMMAND IT. Another John Mitchell band, for the record, so some of you *Frost and Arena fans may know them.

If you're familiar with Dan Swanö's work and don't know Nightingale, we are no longer friends.

double edit: ^ what kind of dipshit uploads a song with 4 extra minutes of silence at the end?
