MintJam

(Credit is probably due to Akumu, but I can't seem to find the old Doujin thread he used to post in... help?)

One of my favorite doujin album finds. They seem to have lots of non-VG tracks, but their 3rd GIG #Crescent album is filled to the brim with 8, 16, and 32-bit Squaresoft themes. Great arrangements with a nice mix of acoustic and electric guitars. Almost every track on this album are my favorite covers of these tunes. That's a pretty high praise and this album completely deserves it.

I wish I had a download link to share, but alas I do not. Enjoy them on youtube. :(

Mega Ran

I feel like this is going to be a controversial post as putting lyrics to VG tunes, especially when they're rapped, has seemed to be a somewhat taboo subject here in the past. To be fair, I completely wrote this guy off in the past even when seeing some of his stuff bubble up to popular sites like Kotaku. That all changed when I saw him perform at PAX 2011 jam space. I was kind of digging his work, but a bit further into his set I heard this and my mind was opened up wide:

There's something about telling your life story over an old NES tune that isn't directly mentioned but is clearly thematically appropriate hits me on an emotional level. With Mega Ran you aren't listening to a guy who raps on top of video game music, you're listening to a real rapper do his thing to beats that just so happen to be game tunes. I really appreciate how Mega Ran can write lyrics from a character's perspective (e.g. Mega Man) as well as hit on more real life topics. It keeps his material varied and his lyrics fresh.

Here's a great Secret of Mana track about co-op gaming:

And just for fun, Splash Woman:

Mega Ran's discography is fairly size able. You can find a bunch of his stuff on Bancamp, although it's poorly organized across multiple artist listings. The best starting point I can suggest is his Forever Famicom album which I find to be of a higher quality than his other releases: http://megarankmurdo...forever-famicom

You can also stream his stuff for free off of Bandcamp and youtube.

Haters gonna hate.

Of course this thread is an awesome idea, but the posting of this music just pushed it into the stratosphere of "best threads ever" for me. This guy is really, really good. THANK YOU!!!

A funky four piece band from Australia. Mostly straight-ish covers and medleys... except for that sweet MM3 arrangement. They've got 6 songs on their youtube page... and conveniently, made the same songs available for download on bandcamp.

Ladies and gents: I present The Runaway Five. Jazziest VGM cover band I've heard.

I don't think they have any albums available for purchase (which is a shame). Their homepage hasn't been updated in about a year either. :(

Eric's Little Shack

By some miracle, you can still find all their old stuff on their Tripod page: http://ericslittleshack.tripod.com/

As a bonus, they also do a fun assortment of non-VG covers too (oh shit, Little Mermaid!).

Oh my god that Belinda Carlisle cover is amazing. :o

Last time they were brought up, I don't believe any of their stuff was available for download. So glad it is now! B)

Moony, thank you for posting Eric's Little Shack, his stuff has always been some of my favorites. Also, Mintjam does THE BEST cover of Frog's theme, but it's TOO FUCKING SHORT!

Also, Tetsuo that jazzy Still More Fighting is fucking sweet.

Runaway Five reminds me a lot of jazz vgm band from Tokyo I found on youtube. I think their name is just "in the Band".

This video has been posted all over TheShizz at some point or another but this seems like the most official thread in which to place it, so hopefully I won't be throwing this in any more threads.

Too be good is to be free, not of talent or wealth or want, which cannot be promised or accurately proscribed, but of personal choice, which unfortunately is promised even less.
