Awesome thread, although I must admit I thought this would be some weird thread about VGM tributes to Daft Punk's album Discovery :P

I've got a few to contribute to this thread. This post will serve as a placeholder.

Weird, for some reason the underlined words aren't a clickable link for me, unless I move the mouse around a bunch. Ignore that post then, some weird browser glitch happened.

His TV theme medley is also pretty awesome.

That link is jacked for me too. Probably because it's on the same line as some GIANT text.

KID OVERDRIVE

Great post! Kid Overdrive was definitely on my giant list of things to post, but you beat me to him. I would definitely call out some of this other tracks as one of his distinct characteristics is his use of the saxophone:

The whole album is great and includes both classic and Mega Man X tunes. You can try and email him at kid_overdrive@yahoo.com if you're interested in getting a copy of the album.

EDIT: Fredde Gredde's main page links here for an entire album of his video game covers (including the MM9 and Zelda tracks posted earlier), but the page is blank. :(

So, the new youtube layout allows you to not only see the videos uploaded by channels that you are subscribed to, but also which videos they favorite. So, with that in mind, I have to thank Shawn Phase for inadvertently bringing these to my attention, 'cause HOLY FUCK THIS GUY IS GREAT.

The Kode (aka The Konami Kode and/or Kode Secret)

As far as I can tell, these guys released a few live mp3's, an album, then disappeared for forever. That's really unfortunate as they have an awesome fusion style going on and their playing is particularly tight.

Some shitty streaming versions of album tracks on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thekodesecret

I can't seem to find much of their album material on youtube, and even worse, their album doesn't appear to be for sale anywhere. You guys need to hear their Double Dragon and Paperboy (yes, Paperboy) covers STAT. If someone doesn't come to the rescue and find where the album is available online, I may consider uploading the album for everyone's benefit.

I second moon's notion on The Kode's stellarness. At one point, I was talking with the bassist (booking manager at the time) about setting up a West Coast tour with Quarter-Circle Jab, but it was more work than I could handle so it didn't happen. :(

I miss these guys. They were my favorite VGM cover band for a while. And yeah, Paperboy is TITS (their Sonic The Hedgehog 2 medley is friggin' sweet too).

Eric's Little Shack

These guys should be well known to all the older shizzies, but for the newer generation, you need to start listening. They're one of the originals of the scene. They're also one of the first to use real drums outside of full bands like the Minibosses, NESkimos, or the Advantage. Recording and production skill has come a long ways in this scene over the last decade, but even though some of these recordings are 8 or more years older, they still manage to sound great all these years later.

By some miracle, you can still find all their old stuff on their Tripod page: http://ericslittleshack.tripod.com/

As a bonus, they also do a fun assortment of non-VG covers too (oh shit, Little Mermaid!).

FUCK.
YES.

I still listen to this shit.

Cliff Colon - ContraBand

Original credit probably goes to Ripplin here, but I can't find an exact post.

So when most of us think of styles to cover Contra music in, we wouldn't think of straight up jazz. Well someone did and they did it rigth. By all accounts it should be awful, but Cliff Colon is a legitimate jazz musician who just happens to be playing Contra music not a video game cover artist trying to play in the style of jazz. Somehow it all works and we end up with a great cover album of the entire Contra soundtrack and a great jazz album. Metal heads need not apply.

Get it here: http://www.contrabandjazz.com/

I love it when we get really well done covers outside of their expected genre. It's totally a breath of fresh air.
