Hi guys.

So I've been toying with the idea of this for a few months now, but it's finally time for it to officially go live. I want to add another complete system library to the collective Shizzylvanian empire, much as Eric Dude did with all American SNES titles.

I had initially thought of collecting for a system that's slightly easier and more attainable- 3DO or Lynx, most likely. Or Game.com if I really wanted a cheap full set. But as much as I love my 3DO, and as much as I accept that I own a Lynx and a Game.com, it still felt too much like catching them all simply for the sake of catching them all. I did that with Pokémon Blue and Gold, and while it was somewhat satisfying to achieve, it isn't the kind of accomplishment that has much deeply resonant excitement. It's more a relief than anything- you're finally freaking done and you can finally do something else with your life.

The N64, for all its faults, I genuinely love. Truly, madly, deeply- even if its library is a savage garden of questionable platformers, poorly aged 3d experiments, and the Cruis'n series.

I've had mine since the Christmas of '96- in the months before its release, I bothered my parents with literally every article in Nintendo Power that could possibly psych them up even a pinch as much as I was psyched for it, and for once in my life it actually paid off. In the months that followed its release, my enthusiasm (like many) became a bit more bittersweet- very few releases overall, and what was being released I could often only rent. Well before the end of the N64's lifespan, I had mostly transitioned to the PSX- cheaper games combined with personal JRPG-mania was simply too enticing.

I still got Nintendo Power well into the Gamecube era, so the N64 never went totally neglected in my brain- but it never saw more than the VERY occasional rental after '98 or so. Conker's Bad Fur Day was the last new N64 game I bought, and even that was mostly because it was on massive clearance at an FYE. In 2003.

Over the last few years, as N64 game prices finally went into the dump, I would occasionally pick up a game or two that I'd rented once or twice like Blast Corps, Tetrisphere, or Beetle Adventure Racing. I never really bothered to pick up much that I wasn't already familiar with- or ones that Nintendo Power had hyped me for but I never played, like Hybrid Heaven. Especially as the system (like the PSX) has a pretty bad rep where it comes to having games that aged gracefully. Despite this, I more recently started getting a bit more willing to experiment- picking up games like Doom 64, Turok 2, Body Harvest, etc. The results have been... quite pleasing, actually. The aging hasn't been nearly as unkind as I had previously been led to believe.

So, I've decided that it's time to take it to the max- I want to collect every single American-released N64 title and review them all individually to set the record straight. Best case scenario, my slightly unrequited love for the N64 will finally be fully validated. It'll be like the girlfriend who you broke up with for someone prettier, cheaper, and more attractive; but then end up eventually going back to, marry, and then live genuinely happily ever after with. Worst case, it keeps the same reputation of being the girlfriend that has a few good points- but ultimately was pretty forgettable, and whom time has been excruciatingly unkind to.

I'm genuinely hoping for the best case.

My current list can be found at:

http://nintendoage.c...View&clId=47347

So, it's 73 down and 223 to go. I think that's pretty attainable, especially with the support of the Shizz to make it happen. Let's do this!

Excellent. I already look forward to a weekend of watching you and Eric streaming a N64-a-thon. And with significantly less titles you can spend more time with the better games ;)

I know next to nothing about collecting N64 games. The last I put any effort into it was in college when Majora's Mask and Kirby 64 were about $30 at GameStop. Are there any games that are rare or expensive on the level that some of the SNES or NES games are?

I love the N64 with all my heart and I have plenty of posts in the N64 thread that talk about my own experiences with it, but it's always a joy to talk about that era with other people who loved it on the same level I did. My god I will never forget turning on Mario 64 on Christmas morning... I have never been as obsessive about games as I was for the first few years of the N64. Mario 64, 1080, Wave Race, Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and so many others I spent so much time collecting 120 stars, knocking off all the EAD high scores, beating games with every character, taking every path, and so on. I miss it, and I realize I will never have as much free time as I did when I was 12 or 13 years old

Oh shiiit I'm excited for the updates, merc! :D I'll see if there are any games at home that I can contribute, though I don't find it too terribly likely; as far as I know, my brother and I built a fairly standard library.

What are the rarest and hardest to find N64 games? Aside from the obvious ones, I really don't know much about the systems library.

What do you suspect will be your biggest challenge with this quest?

Only one of any real note- Clayfighter 63 1/3 Sculptor's Cut which runs around the 100-150 range. It was a Blockbuster exclusive, and there were a couple others too: Blitz Special Edition and Indy Jones and the Infernal Machine. The latter two aren't NEARLY so horrible price-wise, though. There may be one or two more that I'm forgetting. The standard releases cap around the $50 mark- Conker, Worms Armageddon, Bomberman 64 2, etc. The 15-30 price tier has most of your big name titles, and then the majority are generally $5-7 or less on average.

Mario 64 was a similar magical experience for me- I definitely went for the 120 stars, and I'm so glad that I did so before I found out how to get on top of the castle without them- had I done so, the joy of finding Yoshi hiding up there wouldn't have been nearly so powerful an ending punctuation on an already amazing experience.

Star Fox was one of very few games that I bought at its release back then, but I can't stress enough the stokitude I had for the rumble pak. It definitely lived up to the hype, too, in my eyes. To this day, force feedback is one of my biggest reasons for preferring the overall experience of console gaming. Obviously there are ways to get force feedback on a PC, but consoles still tend to do it best- force feedback has yet to really invade the keyboard and mouse.

One game I'm really looking forward to playing again is Dark Rift; I played it when I first started to like fighting games, but only rented it once or twice- never enough to really master it, much less figure out if it was even worth doing so. Maybe it's really awful. For some inexplicable reason, the game I have never played but am probably most excited to is Snowboard Kids 2. I seriously can't explain it. I don't even like snowboarding games.

At the moment, I'm revisiting Pod Racer. My initial impression after playing it multiplayer last weekend for the first time since I owned it way back when was that it was awful. Playing it single player tonight, though... I'm starting to come around a bit. We'll see how long this lasts.

I can help with the game hunting, considering my very close proximity to the original Pink Gorilla (Godzilla). I'll try to find you good deals if I can! :)

I guess I'd need to see the list of what you need. :P

Oh man! When merc told me, I was pretty excited, but I hadn't even thought about doing this. YES!!! Double excite!!!

I am very interested to see what hidden gems the N64 library holds, although it is comparatively small. Really, I was shocked that it tops out at under 300 games, but I also forgot how short it's lifespan was (again, comparatively).

RE: Pod Racer. Yeah, I'm warming up to it a bit, but I'm still pissed that this was the top-selling sci-fi racing game of all time. It definitely doesn't hold a candle to F-Zero X, or even GX. Hell, Rollcage is probably better than Pod Racer! It's just so... plain, for the most part.

Anyway, I have at least a few games to donate to this cause. We'll figure that out tomorrow.

i cross'd a barrier into SCOOPvilLe yesterday and dunked with the best jammers and fresh dip ballers roundabout through an awesome bomb dunk party.

Oh man I never knew that Clayfighter was a Blockbuster exclusive. I remember loving it as a kid even though it was largely a pretty terrible game.

I've got a boxed copy of Perfect Dark, bought it for like $5 at a GameStop on the way out to Mag4. Never even played it as shortly afterward, all my N64 stuff was lost / stolen. Seems it's still worth only that much, so it's yours for price of shipping if you're interested. I think I may have a couple other games you're missing, too...I'll have to look around, some of my old carts have turned up over the years.

My favorite console, so many good moments playing both alone (Mario 64, both Zeldas, Banjo Kazooie, DK64, Conker´s BFD, Jet Force Gemini, Star Fox 64) and with my brothers / friends (Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Pokemon Puzzle League, Mario Party 2, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, San Francisco Rush) etc etc. So much fun, so much FUN.

Good luck with this undertaking!!
