I've only played 1, 2 and 9. I always hated 1 because of the stupid fucking stairs option (still stupid BTW) but grew to love the superior GBC port.

The thing about the first one is that it's classic, but it's also very poorly aged. Even though I know a shit ton about the game since I created a FAQ about the game formulas based on cracking the code, I still think it's not that great. 2 was an improvement, but it also has the problems of 6 and 7 where sometimes it's hard to figure out where you're supposed to go. Without Nintendo Power, I probably never would have found some of those crests.

And 9 was fun and had a lot to do, but I felt the story was kind of weak, but then again, not very many had much of a story*. And the game had way more stuff to do after you beat it that was more fun. I'm not really big on that in games, nor the MMO type aspects.

* 5 was probably the best for a well rounded story. 4 is good too. 8 wasn't bad, but there seemed to be some loose threads about Dhoulmagus.

4 has probably my favorite plot structure of any game, what with all the characters having their own stories but joining up about midway through the game. I wish more games would do that.

I'm pretty sure I rented DQ 1, but my feeble tiny child brain was just annoyed with it because it lacked the instant gratification of games like Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man. Thusly, I didn't play another DQ until 8, and I loved that one. Then played 5 and 4 on the DS, and I've yet to finish VI. The story kind of sputtered out, and I don't remember what I was doing. I very much liked 9, though it could've benefitted from real party members with personality. I guess I won't be getting 10 if it requires a monthly fee. Oh yeah, I emulated like, 20 or 30 hours of DQ7, but it could really use the streamlining that IV, V, & VI got.

The original DQ is kind of awful! I don't know how anyone could play through the original NES version of that one let alone the Famicom/MSX version(which are actually even worse)

The SFC/GBC versions are much better.

I wish we got the DQ Wii Collection here because it has the SF versions of 1-3 which are awesome.

X is an MMO, so there's no surprise as to why it costs a monthly fee.

I'm currently playing through the DS remake of V and I am totally loving it. I might have to put it up there with one of my favorite RPGs ever. Just something about it, makes it real special. I can't think of any specific moments, but there were plenty of times playing the game when I thought, "this is really special!"

I played through a fan translation of 5 on the SNES, it was grate. 8 and 9 are also the best.

I found the job systems from 6 and especially 7 to be too cumbersome to really deal with. Also I think I got stuck in 6 and didn't know where to go...maybe I should give it another shot some time.

There are too many amazing games I want to play them all.

So, I think I'm gonna try to play through V and VI via rom. But VI isn't translated. Is there a good translation patch out somewhere?

Buy the DS version. <_<

Or Play the DS version on an Emulator. DS Emulation is pretty easy if you have a decent PC.

SFC Eng patch Is here, but is 11 years outdated.
