Snailiad
ooh real bass? We should start listing real instruments before the voting.

The fake accordion is too fake-sounding for my taste. Good bass and guitar playing! The song is kinda fun, but doesn't hold my attention too well.

The bass is all real and played by me. Heh, the funny thing is that the accordion is also real. Careless is the accordion guy, so that stuff is up to him, unless I can make it sound more real in mixing somehow.

I know just repeating the song 3 times isn't too interesting, but we were barely over the 2 minute minimum as it was. Careless had some idea of having the song change to unrelated Final Fantasy town songs, but I just wanted to keep it simple and stick to Snailiad. The Seinfeld thing was just sort of a joke that I added to change things up a bit and because I love Seinfeld.

Didn't mean to try to out your mix Omiga :) That l'aqua music also played at the front of Laqour. The base had a name but it escapes me right now, but it did have a shop, a place to rest, and npc's not trying to kill you so it passed the rules of what a "town" was. I was trying to point out that someone was thinking outside the box a bit. :)

It's cool, I didn't think you were trying to out it, I was just hesitant myself. At one point I was going to throw a lot more in there (Shower of Blossoms comes to mind) but by the time I got to where it is when I submitted it I was quite set on a short little power metal blast.

As for the guitar tones, I'm really not happy with them. Haven't found the best place to set up for micing my guitar yet and me and the bass player did this a little on the drunk side so I just set the amp up and slapped some mics in front of it. Whenever I removed the rhythm guitars from the mix everything had far more clarity and the bass driving the track was pretty cool so in hindsight I should have just went with that.

The lack of low end comes from I have SUPER bass heavy speakers to mix with and overcompensated (Again  ). I have some awesome headphones these days but I haven't listened to enough regular music on them to get a good idea of how they relate to anything else I'd play a song on.

Was the second half supposed to be like a joke song? I know you guys like to do stuff like that sometimes.

Not really, but I can totally see how it would seem that way.

I'm honored that you think my accordion sounds like "stock" accordion midi because the midi's job is to sound like perfectly recorded accordion. :)
I try to leave clues so you can tell the difference when I record. Like any time the accordion switches voices you'll generally hear a click sound, unless the person recorded in multiple takes in an effort to remove it.
You can hear the sound of switching reeds in the mix of Seinsnaild at 1:15, a sort of metallic click that almost sounds like a part of the drum set. From my experience with midi it's also generally tough to fake droning accordion chords (the non-melody hum in the intro) in midi that have variance/wobble, so I try to do stuff like that.

Same with the piano. It's kind of out of tune which lets you know that someone likely played a real piano... Unless someone would intentionally use a detuned piano midi for some reason... Speaking of which, anyone know how to tune a really nice piano without risking damage, or should I just get a professional when I can afford it?

Related, if i'm taking this critique the wrong way what sounds bad about it so I can tweak next time?

Also, Branden, your track was awesome! I really appreciated the the didgeridoo for non-comedic purposes!

Hehe, it's frustrating. I got my studio monitors like ten years ago (though I didn't really start learning to mix until more recently). And I didn't know anything about room treatment at the time, and now that I do, I realize the room I'm set up in is kind of a lost cause acoustically :-/

That sucks. My wife has to put up with wherever I end up basically so I have the whole place to check out

Well, all of that stuff aside, I do really like the instrumental version. Thanks for bothering to create a separate mix and uploading it.
