I'm a casual tactics game fan, and for me it feels like these games sit in two categories:

1. If you make a single mistake at any point in a battle, you are doomed.

2. You can recover from mistakes and therefor feels too easy sometimes.

Fire Emblem is #2 for sure. The difficulty in Fire Emblem for me is keeping your team equal in levels. An over leveled unit will handily take on anything that comes at it, and an under leveled unit will struggle against more than one enemy at a time (and often against just a single enemy as well). So making sure the entire team gets some attention becomes the challenge. Every FE game I have played is relatively easy for quite some time, but if you let some characters run away with all the XP and ignore others, eventually it will catch up to you. Team management is a long game. Every FE game is a little different in how it does it, but you can't always just grind your way out of a problem. Hard mode on the latest game, for instance, has finite battles, so you can't just spend time grinding up characters you've goofed up on.

I find the characters are what stand out to me in these games.

It takes a little while, but over time you'll find a group of characters you like and you'll grow attached to them.

You probably won't find the story much different in each game.

Basically, every game's plot is "An evil being (dragon / wizard / demon / crazy or misguided person) has raised an army and is trying to take over the world and it's up to you to stop them."

Just out of curiosity, what other strategy RPGs have you played?

I can't help but wonder what it is you like about other games that you're not getting with Fire Emblem?

Well my favorite strategy rpgs are either great rpgs with very strategically satisfying battle systems (like Final Fantasy Tactics) or great strategy games with rpg mixed in (Age of Wonders 3) or competitive strategy rpg (Dota).  I was hoping fire emblem would have strategically satisfying battle systems, or a great plot, but the plot was basic and the fighting is all oh just use a rock paper scissors of weapon types.  There's very little interesting character building or item progression, and there's just not enough options of stuff to do in battle for it to really feel good for me.

The difficulty in Fire Emblem for me is keeping your team equal in levels.

This doesn't sound like the kind of strategy I was looking for.  Like if the battle system isn't doing it for me, minmaxing that battle system doesn't seem much better.

Thanks to both of you for answering my curiosity. I think I'm going to watch some Let's Plays from the other fire emblems and see if that can rekindle some interest.

I've wanted to play LA Noire for a long time, and I finally got a computer fast enough to play it on Steam.

the pile of garbage known as metroid fusion.

it's fun.  but bad controls and bad bosses make for a frustrating experience.

I have returned to my FF4 Advance play through, and I'm on the final boss, and based on some walk throughs, I'm a bit under-level so I may grind out a bit before I try to return to face the final boss. But that last dungeon is a big fat resource-draining slog.

Still working on Phantasy Star II. I took a break after trying to figure out what spells did what and proceeded to kill myself twice in a row. Decided to bookmark some guides before I went back.

I enjoyed that game overall but some of the combat was bad and frustrating. I just wanted to do more interrogations. Especially "doubting" everyone and watching Cole go off the handle when he does.

Driving isn't too bad. I sometimes would let my partner take the wheel so that I could concentrate on looking around the city.

Control (PC) - It's melting my RTX 2080 Super but wow, what a gorgeous game.  It feels truly next gen.  The gun fights can get intense but the use of telekinesis really levels the playing field.  The exploration plays out like a lightweight 3D Metroid game.  Can't wait to finish it.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 (Switch) - Just some good clean dumb button mashing fun which everyone needs now and then

Dragon Quest II (Android) - Just needed a game to grind on the toilet.  They did a great job with the DQ1 Android\IOS port so I want to keep playing them.

3DS:  Won't charge, need to get it to a repair shop before they stop getting serviced

Switch:  Bloodstained - I got to the bad ending, and now have over half the castle cleared.
