They paved the way for...noise and punk.

not nearly as much as the noise and punk bands that were around before them though?

Sorry, I didn't mean that they innovated the genres, and without taking away from what the original bands did, Nirvana helped bring those genres into the mainstream—some more than others, of course—in a way that no other bands had. Sure, you could say that some other band would have filled that hole, but you could say the same thing about, say, the Beatles or Metallica.

I like Nirvana, but I've never really understood what was so special about them compared to the other alternative / rock / punk bands other than serving as an introductory band to that type of music for a lot of people. Mainstream success doesn't necessarily reflect talent. People compare them to The Beatles and I have to call complete bullshit there. The early Beatles stuff was nothing special but once they started really fucking around with studio experimentation and such, they were doing some really creative and innovative studio work that no one else had really done to that point. Nirvana did a pretty good job of sounding like a more marketable version of a lot of underground 80s bands. I'll stick to Dinosaur JRs first three albums.

Also, I greatly prefer anything Foo Fighters has done to Nirvana.

Everyone in this thread is only justifying their own like for Nirvana. But to answer your question, cetera, yes, you only like Nirvana because you're old.

Never cared for Nirvana, maybe like four of their songs.
I finally came around on the Beatles a couple years ago, so I guess anything is possible.
The insane amounts of Dave Grohl worship, though, I'll never understand that. I mean he's a cool and talented guy and all but damn.

I wish hair metal never went away. Sure some bands try to keep it going (Darkness, Steel Panther) but it's just not the same, everyone knows it's a joke now.
Speaking of jokes, I'm glad you reminded me of that GnR thread.

This reminded me that one of the radio stations here plays hair metal every weeknight at 8:00. Thanks!

Hell to the yes. Saw them live about 10 years ago -- one of the best concerts I've been to.

I also second not understanding the Dave Grohl worship. He does seem like a cool guy, but, after the first two Foo Fighters records (which I loved), most of their stuff bores me to tears.

Listen to Wasting Light, their most recent. Stellar album.

Grohl's just a stand up dude, who also happens to write great music.

I'll give it a try. Haven't listened to Foo in a while (and haven't listened to the latest). A part of it is also due to me just getting too burnt out in high school.

I'm not old because I like Nirvana, I'm old because of statements like this.

I was 6 when Kurt Cobain died.

I was in college.  And MTV was a thing.  And I watched MTV.  And I watched Kurt Loder announce his death on MTV.  I was late to a class because of that report.

My 65 year old dad has liked Nirvana since they started getting airplay. Food for thought.

Additional bands he likes that I don't include: The Beatles, Green Day.
