I'm a little worried about the lack of shield as well, considering I have always played Souls games as kind of a tank. It's going to be different, that's for sure.
I wonder if they are aiming to be a middle ground between DMC (for example) and Souls. More mobile but maybe not crazy combo stuff? I haven't read any of the interviews or anything, so I don't know if they have talked about that.


Everyone plays Dark Souls like that. Blocking 100% of everything isn't even how shields are supposed to work, so I think taking a venture in a different direction is probably better than rehashing the same stuff over again. However, I am worried that it'll end up a cartoony, juggly mess that DMC is (sorry to any fans of the series, but that's how I feel).

While I don't think shields ruin the experience, 100% block rate does make it seem less challenging and makes you depend on shields. 

 

My first DS playthrough I was shield and w/e 1h weapon I could find.  In dark souls 2 I started with a shield and ended up just going pure 1h with no off hand or the offhand was a crossbow.

 

It makes it a lot harder for sure but then you just have to adapt and by adapt i mean learn to roll good.

I seriously doubt they'll make it play anything like DMC or another similar actioner. Those are combo-based twitch action games, whereas this just looks like it's going to take the DS games and speed them up with an emphasis on being bolder in your attacks for greater benefit.

I can't help but keep playing impractical shield-less characters in the souls games and it sucks. Rolling through everything is pretty entertaining, but the experience of putting your shield up and methodically tanking through the game seems so much more right for the world the games are in. It feels a lot less meta. Either way, making a game based around not using a shield is a welcomed change of pace.

Well you could always 2h a weapon and parry/block with that as well.  There are some swords that actually offer up to 80% physical damage reduction on a shieldless parry block which is actually better than most shields in the game barring 100% DR.

Usually if I 2 hand a wepon I just roll through everything because it's better than taking the 20% damage hit. Maybe if I weigh my dude down to the point of fat rolling I'd try that. Sounds pretty fun.

 

I also haven't played DS2 with any characters wearing much beyond Bandit Shorts, so now I can have some sweet looking armor, too.
