Hello friends. Look at your right: lauhTwe.jpg?2

I've had this modded Nomad for a while with x-treme modded battery pack to carry an honest to goodness 3000+mAh cellphone battery for many hours of portable Nomad gaming. On that Everdrive MD flash cart I have every Genesis game ever made. I never owned a Genesis growing up, though I did have a GameGear but not too many games for it - I did love Ristar, and both my mom and I had a ton of fun with Columns.

The purpose of this thread is to seek advice of games to play on the toilet. I usually make one trip to the toilet per night, and multiple times on the weekends. For many years I have been playing my DS, or 3DS, or reading comics, or reading newspapers or magazines. I love reading so sometimes I have even found myself at my friends' or family places with no phone, or no materials, and I'll go under their sinks and read the labels on cleaning products or shampoo bottles. I sometimes have fantasies about being in the movie True Lies. However, now I want to play Genesis games on the toilet using this portable gaming system. I would appreciate any and all recommendations for fun, cool Genesis games. I think the only games I've played on any Genesis, anywhere, have been Sonics 1, 2 & 3, and...? I really have not played any Genesis games, which is pretty shameful.

I'll come back to review games as you recommend and post them. These don't have to be games I can finish in 5-20 minutes, as I can take the Nomad with me out of the bathroom if the gameplay is compelling. However, my Nomad does not have flash saving, so I might not be able to complete many if any of your recommendations. It does allow cart saving, so any RPGs or other games that had actual saving on the original carts, I can do. I like any style of game but I've probably played a huge amount, if not nearly all games that were cross-platformed on the SNES. You can still recommend them if they're different on the Genesis, I won't mind.

The only game I've played so far is Contra: Hard Corps. I picked this one because I remember watching a stream of Matt and Dee playing it and I think it had good music. This one was pretty fun though sometimes I get confused with the Genesis controller system (the Nomad has 6 buttons). Did it come with a three button controller first (or five button), and then move to 6 face buttons? Anyway, this one had good music, but I found it pretty hard. I barely beat the first boss (walking spider thing) however I very much enjoyed killing the long legged eel beast. I didn't understand the different characters. When things blow up, the sprites are gigantic and you can't see shit. I felt confused, and excited the entire time. I made it to the second level and then had to leave the toilet, and later, my apartment so I couldn't continue. However, I will be playing this one again.

Thank you in advance for your recommendations, I look forward to playing some fun, cool, classic (non-Sonic) games on this portable gaming machine.

Give Midnight Resistance a shot.  It's a pretty damn awesome Contra clone and I've been trying to find a copy.

Two Crude Dudes has always been a Genesis favorite of mine.  I didn't have a Sega growing up, so there are certain games I played a bunch at friends' houses.

I will suggest:

You start off as a regular police officer, something like an EDF Ranger. But as you progress through the game you get lots of cyber upgrades. Jetpacks, shotguns, rockets. You turn into something like an EDF Fencer.  Plus there's a gorilla that I totally don't remember. I also don't remember if this game is fun at all, but I liked playing it on my friend's Genesis because it was cool.

Toejam and Earl if you feel like also slightly gyrating on the toilet while playing.

B.O.B. if you want a decent Genesis sidescrolling metroid-ish thing.

Comix Zone cause you're in a comic, man.

Altered Beast for beat em up action.

Ecco the Dolphin if you feel for pretty graphics, obtuse gameplay, calming music, and a long playtime (ideal for slow moving but non-stressful shits).

Vectorman for platforming and silliness.

And the one you knew was coming:

Ranger-X for great sidescrolling shooter action, graphics, music, and can probably be beat in less than an hour.

I rented ESWAT somewhere and sucked miserably at it. I was very disappointed because I could never get to the super armor stages. It looked so cool.

Wizwars, about the bush hogging. Just wet and part my man. Give that bush the Moses treatment and head for the Promised Land.

Ranger-X

That actually is a good game but its control scheme has a learning curve that's maybe too steep for toilet play on a Nomad?  Other suggestions:

Comix Zone

Sonic Spinball

B.O.B. (repetitive and somewhat mindless platformer, but it's fun exploring levels, and gets challenging)

Toejam & Earl (both of them)

Gunstar Heroes

Streets of Rage (all of 'em)

Edit: lol pseudo doupble post

Genesis has some pretty good ports of classic Sega Arcade games, too.  Hang On, Afterburner, Outrun, Golden Axe, etc.

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts

Any other Capcom port

Gain Ground

Mega Turrican

Space Invaders '91

Gauntlet IV (port of original arcade game, but with an adventure mode, and with one of the best soundtracks on the system)

Devilish (breakout-type game that combines shmup and RPG elements)

Combat Cars (if you like top-down aracde style racers)

Various X-Men games

Mega Man - The Wily Wars (Megadrive-only ports of MM 1-3)

If you like more traditional scrolling shmups...

Darius II (AKA Sagaia)

Zero Wing (yes it is actually a pretty fun game)

Thunderforce IV

MUSHA (Aleste)

Wings of Wor (Gynoug)

Raiden Trad

Honestly the Genesis had a huge library of great games, a lot of them console exclusive.  It's kind of sad how overlooked it is nowadays.

Does the flash cart support save states? My old GBA flash cart had an NES emulator with save states, which was awesome and very convenient for portable stuff. Give the Sonic the Hedgehog games another try, dawg. They're not all that long. I could probably polish off Sonic 3 if I had to take a long Chipotle dump.

I always liked Revenge of Shinobi more than Shinobi 3.

I think the only reason is, Revenge of Shinobi was my third ever genesis game, after the pack-in altered beast and the first day buy of After Burner.

Great Genesis games, that might go unmentioned on just about every "best of" list:

- Rocket Knight Adventures

- Toe Jam & Earl (just the first)

- General Chaos (rarely mentioned, but a really cool strategy/action game)

- El Viento / Final Zone / Granada / Anything by Wolf Team

- Gunstar Heroes

- Arrow Flash

- Thunder Force IV

- Alisia Dragoon

- Insector-X

- Golden Axe II (it's a exclusive)

Of the top of my head, those are some hidden gems on the console.

Although I prefer the SNES's Turtles in Time, you should give Hyperstone Heist a go. It's very similar.

Beyond Oasis and Landstalker(though I admit to only playing this a little) for Zelda-like games.  Plus they still look pretty good.  Both have Sega Saturn sequels that I like better.

Shining Force 1 and 2 for strategy rpgs.  The battles remind me more of Fire Emblem than Tactics Ogre or FFT, but you have spells and more traditional equipment.  Warsong is also really good in this category.

Gunstar Heroes, Shinobi 3, Comix Zone for your action fix.  Gunstar Heroes and Shinobi 3 are some of the best games on Genesis in my opinion.

Honorable mention:  High Seas Havoc:  Data East blatantly ripping off Sonic the Hedgehog and making him a pirate.  I remember liking it though.  It's really short and I don't think it's too terrible.

My Nomad is jealous of your Nomad's vim and vigor. =(

- Alisia Dragoon

- Arcus Odyssey (for some isometric RPGing)

- Splatterhouse 2 (if you're looking for difficulty and gooeyness)

- Thunder Force III (if you like good music and having a seizure)

- Streets of Rage 1 & 2 (not 3....fuck 3)

- Golden Axe 1 & 2 (not 3...also fuck 3)

- Jurassic Park (because you can be a raptor, and who doesn't want that?)

- Castlevania Bloodlines

- Vectorman

I'm imagining Ellis writing the script to this at a computer, and every time he gets to the end of a line about religion being bad he smacks his fedora to tip it, making the sounds of a typewriter being reset.

Crusader of Centy is the only game I love that hasn't been mentioned. It's like a Faster paced older Zelda game but instead of secondary items, you recruit animal helpers with various special powers.

I'll also second Beyond Oasis. It's one of my all time favorites

first of all, funky fm music just really does it for me.  Even if it's something corny like early mariah carey I can get way into the music with the fm bass and keys going on.   Then, there's everything else in this song.  The enigmatic title.  The synth programming brings out all the right emotional responses in me:  leads that remind me of thunderforce (even if the portamento isn't quite as exaggerated), chording synths that remind me of very old and charming genesis osts like super monaco (except somehow they don't sound as flimsy here), and of course a solid bass.  Great original motifs, interesting harmonies, good melody, rhythm.. everything that can make a song great is here!
