Soundtrack in Xcom Mario is great. moonie is 100% wrong about his opinion.

Please post examples of good music. I like the Peach Castle track, but it's a cover of an existing song so i don't give Kirkhope much credit for it.

All the non-mario-inspired tracks sound like Viva Pinata to me, which I think is a calm, delightful soundtrack. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing (which it sounds like it's not your thing).

Some of my favs:

No, the N64 was not my first system.

Man, those songs give off such a strong Banjo Kazooie vibe (which I'm sure was Kirkhope's goal). I love it. I mean, they are not AWESOME tracks by any means, but they are very enjoyable and fun.

And no, the n64 wasn't my first system either ;) (grew up with NES / SNES but played Banjo Kazooie / DK64 at the right age I guess, 12 / 13 years old respectively)

No, they're not tracks I would listen to on their own. But they perfectly complement the tone of the game.

WRONG. SAD.

Game is really fun, so far. I'm in world 2 and the regular game is starting to get slightly challenging. I did all the available challenges after beating world 1 and some of those were pretty dang hard. Not sure if I'm suppose to take them on after beating a world or after beating the game. Either way, I got through all of them, even though one of them took 15+ tries before beating.

I beat world 1 last night and got more than halfway through the challenges. I think I'm going to 100% world 1, but skip the challenges (but maybe not the secret chapters?) for future worlds otherwise I'll never see the end.

Oh wait, there are only 4 worlds. I was thinking there were 8. Yeah, I'll probably try to do all of the challenges now!

Completely wrapped up world 1. I did the secret chapter after all 10 challenges. I was expecting it to be inline with the difficulty of the challenges, but nope, it was super easy.

Hmmm. I think the whole Kirkhope thing is an interesting question. vgm should stand on its own outside the context of the games it appears in......does any of his? In-context is fine, but there are so many vgm artists who transcend the limitations of their respective formats that its like....❓

Everything boils down to personal preference. I am a big fan of his work on Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Banjo Kazooie in particular, is a game that left a big impression on me, and the music played a big role in that. I enjoy listening to it casually, on my car or whatever. It is great music, and I am not alone it seems, seeing that XOC of all people played the game WAAAAAY after it was released and he liked it enough to do a complete cover album, so I guess that alone is a strong point in Kirkhope's favor ;)

ICYMI, Danimal just shared this on Facebook and it's pretty fascinating. Warning: there may be some intense Iwata feels/cries while reading this article, but it's super interesting
