i have decided to start saving up for a trip to japan sometime earlyish next year.

i have no idea of what to do other than shop for records & famicom games and drink all the beers i spotted in neon genesis evangelion.

i would also like to ride some rollercoasters and soak up the cities.

i know some of you boys have been there somewhat recently, so lemme know what you liked & what you suggest.

regarding food, i don't eat fish / seafood, so i am a little fukt in that department, but i plan on hitting up some steakhouses.

also, if anyone wants to join me, lets do this!

meh, you'll find SO much non-seafood.

Pretty much all the sleeping situations rule.  Regular hotels, hostels, Air BnB, capsule hotel.  Just book whatever, it'll be great.

I absolutely LOVE Kyoto.  It's the best for peaceful walks, temples, shrines, some foods.

Tokyo and Osaka are great!  They've got a bit of everything.  Hiroshima is nearby enough and cool enough to be worth it, depending on your trip?

The JR pass is totally worth it, in my experience, IF you are going to multiple cities.  You have to buy it IN THE US, so plan a couple months in advance.

I went back in 2009 with a college buddy and literally no idea what to do other than "I like the anime and speak minimal japanese from my extreme I play a japanese MMO days" and had a fucking blast. tl;dr - got a 7 day JR rail pass and a lonely planet, booked everything as we went.

General advice:

- JR RAIL PAAAASSS. Like one round trip from Tokyo to Hiroshima and it pays for itself + gets you on most Tokyo local lines

- There's an insane amount of lodging (in the cities) so you should be fine winging it, but be prepared budget wise (ie the cheap places may be filled)

- Food is def not a problem, my buddy hates seafood (but didn't disclose till we were IN japan) so I wanted to grind his bones to dust, but there is ample everything else everywhere. We ate a ton of italian, pizza, pork cutlets (tonkatsu or katsudon, i forget which it is), ramen, etc

- Get a pocket language guide/the google translate app (you can use your camera to augment reality into english, it's great), and make an effort to speak japanese first and ask if they're cool switching to english. 90% of the time they were stoked to use english, but some were shy/less likely to help if you were all WASSUP WHERE TOKYO TOWER AT. This may have changed in nearly a decade, however, ask sam.

Places/stuff to do:

- 2nd pingo on Kyoto, we went there first and actually met some rando american ladies while wandering a temple and hung with them the rest of the trip. The main station is wildly huge and has an above and below ground mall. Also the gold and silver temples, kiyomizu-dera (cool temple in the forest, featured in the animes), kyoto tower, etc. I think nintendo is there too? maybe? I know the ghibli museum is.

- Make sure to eat some takoyaki even tho you don't like seafood, it's pretty wild. I recommend getting it at a baseball game, which brings me to:

- GO TO A BASEBALL GAME. If it's in season. We saw one in Tokyo and they are so into it, it's awesome. Unique songs and cheers for every batter, indoor stadium, wild ballgame food (huge hot dogs, takoyaki, meat sticks, and more), and the best part: roaming beer girls with kegs strapped to their back that pour you a fresh Kirin/Sapporo/whatever when needed. Delightful.

- Make it to Hiroshima if you can, it's a gorgeous city and the history is sobering but incredibly interesting - growing up in a nation that's WOOO NUKES vs one that they got used on.. very different story over there

- Tokyo almost has too much, I didn't make it to Harakjuku/Shinjuku/Shibuya (the artsy cool places), we stayed in Ginza which was a business district so we had a nice hotel, but still got around pretty easy. Odaiba island has a SEGA museum and other cool museums (and used to have the life sized gundam), Tokyo tower is neat, Kinokuniya bookstore(s) are another famous anime place with tons o comics if you wanna be a nerd and pick up Berserk or something, and there a bunch of day trips nearby for temples, etc. Akihabara is the infamous anime/weeb central and lived up to it. Random stores had hentai everywhere, gundams, and more. We went in a 7-story porn store where the 4th was all used panties/garments and the 7th was entirely real dolls posed like someone turned the Amsterdam red light district into a museum. We mostly just roamed and ducked in places and had lot of cool experiences. Found some hidden cocktail bar that was extremely serious, ate dinner at a steak place in a basement and met the Turkish owner, and more.

- I also randomly met a dude on another recent trip that runs a Tokyo bar crawl club/event/thing, I can put you in touch with him if you're flying solo and want to get rowdy with some likely english speakers.

That's still probably too much for an overview, but there's most tips/info I can send along in a google doc or something if you're interested. On top of all that said, there's still a ton we didn't do either - Mt Fuji, the deer temple, other famous temple sites, Osaka, Hokkaido, etc etc..

Please abduct Hidetaka Miyazaki, break his legs, and make him write out complete Dark Souls lore to answer all our questions, Misery style.

The wife and I went in 2008 and had a great time. Much like other folks are saying, Kyoto and Tokyo are must-sees. Eat a Mos Burger and drink an Asahi soda for me. I loved the Ghibli museum in Kyoto and the golden temples. You'll obviously want to go to Shibuya and Akihabara while you're in Tokyo. We were there for a week and it didn't feel like nearly enough time to see all the stuff we wanted to see, so if you can swing 2 weeks, I'd recommend it. We stayed in nice hotels both in Tokyo and Kyoto and that shit was hella expensive. I know you're a rough-and-tumble young man that can sleep on a concrete floor, so you'll likely do better on the money end of things in that regard. If I had to do it all over again I'd imagine I'd do much better with getting more bang for my buck. 2008 was a different time and we were scared of Nippon, so we decided to have a travel agent book all sorts of shit for us. It made things convenient, but it also made things real expensive and we were pretty much broke at the time. This was the age before the ubiquitous smart phone, so you should be much better off.

Here's an old-ass flickr photo album of our trip there.

Def wanna visit japan again sometime.

JR pass is good

Hostels/capsule hotels/etc are good, if you can't find one there are also cheap bathhouses you can stay overnight in, but a lot of them have a no tattoo policy.

Learn some basic japanese phrases, bc if you're a white dude in japan and speak even a little japanese, a lot of them will be impressed/more inclined to help.

Google maps is great for getting the hang of the public transpo.

Don't stick your chopsticks straight up from your food.

When are you looking at going? I'll be in Australia in January and looking at going to Vietnam for a while and then Japan for two weeks before heading home.
