damnit TMZ.

i actually saw the report of death on CBS.  they must've picked it up from TMZ before TMZ corrected the error.

he might still be alive but not for long.

still gonna listen to the traveling wilburys for the rest of the day

several news outlets are reporting his demise.  this is a cluster.

LAPD sherrif is likely to blame a little moreso than tmz, but they seem to be not accepting the blame likely due to not wanting a possible lawsuit from tom's fam...and i believe its because they sent out a chaplin. tmz reporters probably saw this glomming outside the hospital and preemptively ran with it based on the info they got. traveling wilburys all day for me after my stock report. rest in peace to a true spicetreader legend, perhaps the sole man who even put dirtfreex on the map. this is like losing a favorite uncle or a musical tom hanks, fuck.

What a fucking bummer. I love this man. I remember being like 13 and asking for a Tom Petty CD for my birthday and my friends looking at me like "wtf?" and listening to that same album in my early 20s with my same friends still thinking Tom Petty was lame. Fuck that, Tom Petty was amazing and I will miss him. This is a heavy loss.

his daughter's pissed...she said on twitter (to rolling stone): 'my dad's not dead, but your fucking magazine is'. mick foley had a really beautiful tribute that brought me to tears on his facebook, check it out.

I don't find enjoyment in suddenly realizing that Tom Petty is dying from his Heart being Broken.

I had never heard this particular song before, but it couldn't be more appropriate.  Love it.  When I played it, my dog, who's been hyper all night, came and laid down beside me, sullen.  I think I'm gonna ask for it next time I karaoke...who cares if nobody knows it.

I'm listening to a playlist made entirely of Tom Petty and it's hitting me just how much I took for granted a lot of these songs and how great they are.

I remember when I was about 17, I was working as an airbrush artist at the local amusement park and as I was leaving one night after a grueling day, I heard the concert going on and it was Tom Petty and I remember slowing down my hustle to my car in order to linger around and enjoy the music more.

RIP. We lost another great one. :(

I'm imagining Ellis writing the script to this at a computer, and every time he gets to the end of a line about religion being bad he smacks his fedora to tip it, making the sounds of a typewriter being reset.

When I was about 9-10 years old I transitioned from cassette tapes to CDs and over the span of a year I got three CDs. First was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits, followed by Green Day's Dookie, and Weezer's blue album. Those three albums combined had a lot of influence over 10-year-old me and were vital to forming my musical tastes for years to come. I think the reason I wanted the Tom Petty CD was because VH1 had some thing one night where they played all the videos from those songs back to back, and it struck me hard.

one thing that's making his passing easier is hearing the stories. maybe this is the case for anyone who passes. it no doubt turns the waterworks on and i mean, thats as human as it gets, but sometimes you just gotta let it out to be able to get from one point to the next emotionally and psychologically. thank you for sharing that sindra.

Thanks for posting that Mick Foley thing. I'm glad he mentioned Highway Companion. When that album came out I had long been "over" Tom Petty, and I was at peak college cool kid mode, so I'm not sure what really made me take a chance on it, but it got me back into his stuff.
