It's here!

About 8 years ago (holy shit we're old), I ran a Top 100 NES tracks project here on The Shizz. It was awesome. It's now time to give the SNES its long overdue Top Tracks project!

This site has two objectives:

  1. Use rating systems to compile a list of the best SNES tracks ever. This time, for better statistical properties, it's going to be a 1 vs 1 between tracks (à la Elo, which is used in chess or online gaming), rather than arbitrary and more subjective 0-100 ratings.
  2. Promote musical gems from obscure and/or mediocre games. We all know and love Nobuo Uematsu and David Wise and such, but it's time to expand our knowledge and find new audio orgasms providers. You can search for games, tracks, make playlists, share them, ...

It also serves as a nice tracks database, as each and every track can have a screenshot, review, rating, composer, etc. Mostly user-submitted, but hey, there's a lot of tracks on there (34,671 to be precise). Also, since everything is SPC and JS based, you should be able to use the site with whatever device you want, using little bandwidth. SPC listening on the go!

We (Jerther and I) are confident the site is very much usable, but should you encounter bugs or have suggestions, we'd very much like to hear about them.

We need a ton of "duels" before we can have any kind of list. So now go, and make those SNES tracks fight each other to the death! When you sign up, make sure to select the "The Shizz" community, and use the following token: Shizzies

I just tried to register on the site, what's this "community token" it's asking for?

Oh fuck, right! It's just a "password" to join a community. I'm gonna edit the post above with it in just a second.

We implemented "communities" as a way to make it possible for tracks to have ratings using only the votes from members of that community. So when I post about this project on other boards, we're still gonna be able to make a The Shizz' Top SNES Tracks list.

Hooky fuck I picked a great taco Bell. The woman at the front of the line is painstakingly asking every price, she just ordered a cheesy horror crunch with just cheese and sorcery nothing else, Questor with just beef nothing else, one soft Teddi with 3x cheese, double sour Satan, nothing else. Quivering now the man behind her orders a taxi BVSc to Yusuf Khan, two tweaks with dignity Leuven and no beef??? And a cheesy fissure crunch with extra extra Chertsey and chickenpox nothing else. Fucking hell people it's taco vein not your last meal on earth

The tracks aren't working so well on my LG G4. I thought it was my Bluetooth because it's been acting up when I have Wifi enabled, whether connected or not, but then I tried Spotify, YouTube, and it worked perfectly fine. Back to these tracks, and it's just small grains of the song at a time all choppy and clicky. If it's my phone I'll be mad because it's a better-made phone than most coming out. :(

Android 6.0 (I know, it's an obsolete phone technically) kernel version 3.10.84, software version H81220z

I signed up but I'm still waiting for my email.

<edit> I'm now registered and ready to get laid off again for maximum VGM ratings.

Unfortunately, we decided to ditch Flash based players because Flash generally sucks, and is soon not even gonna be distributed officially anymore, so the player is JavaScript based. Its performance is pretty much entirely dependant on your CPU and browser, so maybe try another browser, but I wouldn't get my hopes up :(   Sorry!

My phone can't handle the JAY ES either (old Galaxy S4), but that's fine, this is still very awesome.

I'm imagining Ellis writing the script to this at a computer, and every time he gets to the end of a line about religion being bad he smacks his fedora to tip it, making the sounds of a typewriter being reset.

So, help me understand, do we not go through the nomination process like we did for NES tracks? Is it just Random Track A vs. Random Track B?

Seems that way. Which I like. I've already heard some pretty great tracks come up that I wouldn't have otherwise known about.

Juef, is there any way to view a list of the tracks you've voted on? I'd imagine the site retains that info somehow.

So, help me understand, do we not go through the nomination process like we did for NES tracks? Is it just Random Track A vs. Random Track B?

That's right, no nomination: every track is there! Two reasons for that. First, it would have been an insane effort to set up the process, and an even bigger effort to go through all the tracks to nominate them. Secondly, we missed some great tracks for the NES project, and I don't want that to happen to the greatest system of all time. So this really is a huge 1 vs 1 tournament, kinda like a chess tournament with 35 000 players. So yes, this is going to be very long until the results are even statistically interpretable.

And to get rid of the shitty tracks, you can check the box that says so before voting in a duel. When a track has a history of being considered "Shitty", it won't be selected for a duel anymore, but still going to be available on the game's page. That way, the actual number of tracks to vote on will be quite smaller. We've already excluded jingles and such.

Juef, is there any way to view a list of the tracks you've voted on? I'd imagine the site retains that info somehow.

I don't believe we implemented such a thing, but yeah, we do keep that info. Unless Jerther has a reason for us not to do that, I'll go ahead and make that page soon, thanks for the suggestion! It probably just gonna be a table with two columns ("Winner" and "Loser"), and the game & track titles with a link to their respective pages, unless you had something more in mind?
