Baby metal is fucking annoying, but I'd say it qualifies as pop. They performed in Colbert's late night show - on a major US network!

Then again, couldn't an argument be made that most music we listen to is 'pop' by the mere fact that they are successful/popular enough to reach a wide audience?

Led Zeppelin is considered "classic rock", but they were popular as shit back in their heyday. If you can sell out arenas, are you not pop?

We might need a more thorough definition of what we mean by 'pop' (or more specifically 'jpop') for the purposes of this thread. Can Gran Rodeo not be considered jpop? Sure, they're 'jrock' but isn't that getting a little hair splitty? They're pretty big and have songs that appear all over various anime opening and ending themes.

jpop has a very distinct style and babymetal definitely incorporates that into their songs. They also have rap segments sometimes.

Though when I saw them live they went 110% metal

Yes yes yes!  See, you guys.  Look at our colleague, Paragon.  SPECIFIC suggestions for me!  Moonie, too, though I'm definitely looking for pop, as in, the genre, not as in popular.

How is "pop" defined, as a genre?  Interesting.  Overcoat mentions rapping and while rap is its own genre, having rap sections is also part of the jpop style.  Jpop will have symphonic sections, weedly guitar solos, rap breakdowns, a slow blues drop...whatever.  But it's still pop.

Trohnics, Exhibit A.  Where Babymetal came from:

Exhibit B.  An early song, from back when they were a still a side/sub project.

Exhibit C: A much later song.  Those are some sick guitars, sick drums.  Heavy ass breakdowns.  But this song is still all about the chorus, and the lead pop star singing it.  And relying that much on backing tracks?  Totally not metal.

Exhibit D: Their most recent single, I think?  Admittedly, this is straying farther from pop.  But this is still only a bit more metal than...I dunno, emo?  Nightwish?  If their entire discography was more like this I think you'd have a case, but I'm not throwing away years of history and 2 albums just yet.
