I don't know what to call this, but images like this seemed to be everywhere when I was growing up.

I can best describe it as being surreal, very colorful, and with some southwest influence.  I remember it being prominent right before the whole grunge aesthetic took over.  Please share examples and help me gush about something amorphous that has been lost in time.

I think so.  The cover for "A Show of Hands" is kinda similar.

Man, I hated the cover of that Nintendo guide when I was a kid. I was a How to Win at Nintendo Games reader :P

You can take your boring guide book cover and go straight to hell!

But yeah, the content of this book wasn't good (if I remember correctly), but the vaguely menacing art sold me on it.

I want to say this style was around in the 80s too, I think I've seen it on some 80s album covers but specific ones aren't coming to mind.

Rocko's Modern Life was an entire cartoon based around this aesthetic. I'm sure there were others.

You both TOTALLY hit this on the head, and I'm surprised I didn't think of either of these for my initial post.  That Great White beer in particular is dead the fuck on.

Is there a specific name for this type of art/aesthetic?

Man this is so super interesting to me. If my journalism hat weren't so far-stuffed down in the dust of a metaphorical crawlspace corner, I'd be half-a-mind to dig it out and go on a quest similar to the people who got obsessed with finding the designer of the iconic "Jazz" paper cup design.

I want to know if there's a name for it too.

The Rippingtons - "Moonlighting", 1986. Does this style have a jazz connection?

Edit: it seems to have an affinity for furries too.

OKAY FUCK. Dude I have been working on a Rippingtons mix for like the last 24 hours intending to make a thread here, because I just found out about them yesterday was completely blown the damn ass hell away to find that there isn't already a Shizz freakout thread about them. Totally 100% on-brand for the Shizz General Aesthetic

Steely the fuck Dan, 1972. Not quite the same thing but looks like it could be a predecessor.
