#987317 Year end lists?

Posted by bob on 21 December 2010 - 11:42 AM

Randy Newman rules! I love that record.

I liked Iron Man II. It wasn't as good as the first, my favorite comic book movie (take that Batman) but I thought it was pretty decent, the main problem being that it tried to tie in too many plot lines for films that don't exist yet. and now Jon Favreau's gone, so i'm not expecting much from 3, if they choose to go there. I think the last really good movie i saw in the theater was Inglorious Basterds, which was '09 i think. but i liked Due Date (pretty much for the same reason I liked Iron Man II- Robert Downey Jr can do no wrong) and i liked The Other Guys way more than i thought i would. i missed Machete unfortunately, and i missed Red, which i also wanted to scope, but i have to imagine True Grit will win my fav movie of the year. did anybody see A Serious Man? total masterpiece! i liked the trailer for Defendor, it made me feel like i just saw the movie.

I really liked Dennis Lehane's new book, it was amazing. and I liked Barry Eisler's 'Inside Out' but you have to read 'Fault Line' first.

oh, and i forgot French Quarter 'It's Not Just Kissing'

I'm happy the U.S. military finally figured that everybody's the same sexuality in a flag covered box, and the community radio bill that just passed is a good one. and prop 203! it's still a one party system if you ask me, nothing's changing there. i do prefer the republicrats that can articulate themselves, and when they do, their rhetoric at least somewhat reflects actual reality. but whatever.

#966544 Man Food

Posted by bob on 28 October 2010 - 11:55 AM

i don't usually eat at outback steak house because a) chain and b ) outback steakhouse, but we got a gift certificate for xmas or something and i'll eat where ever if it's free. so i ordered a beer, a hefeweizen, because that's what i wanted. and the server, this dude, came back after a minute and said, 'sorry sir, i don't want to break man law, but do you want a fruit in your beer?'

of course i want fruit in my beer! it's a hefeweizen! i'll take an orange or a lemon, jerk. man law? are bad beer commercials really creating reality now?

i guess this could've gone in the 'gears grinding' one, but whatevr.

I don't get nervous when I see people that look middle eastern or muslim or whatever getting on my plane. i get nervous because i'm getting on a plane and i'm about to be FLYING THROUGH THE AIR. as far as terrorists, i get way more nervous when i see military dudes and women at the airport. like a terrorist is going to dress like some guy from 'the Temple of Doom.' give me a break. i fear the soccer moms.

#962469 What grinds my gears!

Posted by bob on 18 October 2010 - 01:46 PM

it really depends on the situation who is being rude when it comes to making sure there are vegetarian options at a public meal. vegetarians choose to not eat a certain food because of its ingredients. no one else is obligated to accommodate. if they want to be all self-righteous about this choice, that's fine, but it's rude. then again, i've had omnivores hound me and hound me for not eating a certain item far more often. but that's just my personal experience. i don't expect my diet choices provided for, especially in a work setting. if vegetarian options aren't provided, i just decline the food as politely as i can, and if i feel slighted in any way, i try my best to keep it to myself. if it's not a work situation, people generally fall over themselves to provide something i can eat, which always makes me feel worse. food allergies are another matter.

as for what grinds my gears: astrology. as if everybody born in the same month are similar (or have sex the same) because of some sign humans assigned to a random grouping of stars. not that the universe doesn't have things to tell us about our lives on this planet or whatever, but gimmee a break. besides, i'm a scorpio, and everyone knows that's the best sign. duh.

#959813 So Who's Looking Good on November 2?

Posted by bob on 12 October 2010 - 12:40 PM

Recent poll has Goddard within 3 points of Brewer. Every poll with her being 15-20 points ahead has been Rasmussen or Fox News so I am more optimistic about this elections than most people.

mmmm... 3% of all voters, 11% of likely voters. While I take somme small comfort in the trend moving the right direction, I still don't think there's much to be optimistic about. It'll be closer than expected, probably, but it'll blow my mind if Goddard gets there.

flashback 2008: "While I take somme (sic) small comfort in the trend moving in the right direction, I still don't think there's much to be optimistic about. It'll be closer than expected, probably, but it'll blow my mind if Obama gets there."

#912522 The Wire

Posted by bob on 14 June 2010 - 02:07 PM

totally nerded out this weekend:

i got the new-ish WIRE book by rafael alverez (not to be mistaken with the book they put out after season 3, which i also own)
and listened to '...and all the pieces matter' the soundtrack CD as well as some lungfish (total b-more heroes) and, as i said,
nerded out. it was awesome.
