I was actually thinking last week whether or not they were going to release anything new....
and whether or not it would be decent as everything after Quebec has been lackluster.

I was reading places that Gene Ween is erratic and still in the depths of substance abuse or atleast reeling from it
I guess it worked for a near ten years but now we get to see the effects of mental decay

Read that article I linked to. Gener is newly sober.

I disagree that everything post-Quebec hasn't been good, though every Ween album ever has taken at least 10 listens to grow on me and those have been no different.

To be fair, Ween has only had one full album since Quebec since Shinola was reconstructions of old demos. I would Like to hear your Ween order.

1. Chocolate And Cheese
2. The Mollusk
3. White Pepper
4. The Pod
5. Quebec
6. 12 Great Country Hits

7/8. Pure Guava / Godweensatan (i do not get these at all)
9/10. Shinola / La Cucaracha

Hmmm, it's really hard because some of them are so close together.

Probably:

1. The Mollusk/White Pepper
2. Chocolate and Cheese
3. Pure Guava
4. Quebec
5. La Cucaracha/12 Golden Country Greats
6. God Ween Satan
7. Shinola
8. The Pod

I don't dislike any of them, but I haven't listened to The Pod enough to really get into it. I don't own it and only listened to Tender Lad's copy a handful of times.

I think it is a personal thing. I had a copy of the Pod that made it into heavy rotation so I got use to the sound and the heavy themes of silliness, sickness and inhalants. Interesting to see Pure Guava up so high, May have to sit down with that record again. Excellent to see White Pepper so high as that is my personal favorite and my first ween album.

Lets begin with the past in front

12 Golden Country Greats is #1. That is a seriously good country album. Lyrically, it's all a joke (and some of the best Ween lyrics IMO), but musically it's not even mockery of the genre like their other genre spoofs are, it's straight up true to the form. The sessions musicians were Nashville guys who worked with big time legends like Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Gene Autry, Merle Haggard, etc...

For me:

1. 12 Golden Country Greats
2. The Mollusk/White Pepper
3. Chocolate and Cheese
4. Quebec

The rest just sort of mingle below this together.

Some of Ween's songs are just so goddamn amazing that they really transcend a "joke group" a thousand times over. Por exemplo:

Cop my solo rap album: GHETTO EXPENSE REPORT

Ween rules.

I worked in a house a few weeks back that the landlord said Ween used to rent out as a practice space. There's a piano in it they're trying to get rid of, so perhaps these guys used to jam upon it.

Complaining that a Ween album is "uneven" is like complaining that your mayonnaise is too smooth. Personally I sort of pick and choose what I like out of the giant Ween buffet. Some stuff I just hate and other stuff is awesome.
My fave is Golden Country greats (the promo version 'cause I like to hear the Ali rap), then Mollusk and everything else. I tried to get the tribute band to do "Pinkeye on My Leg" with me playing the synth lines on lap steel and it was always like "we'll do it for the next show." Sigh. The synth sounds in that are just incredible. Perfect!

The All Request Live version of that track is SPECTACULARLY funny. Deaner's "YEAH!" halfway through kills me.

as strange as it is for Aaron Freeman to cover old country and pop songs for a new record...it is really good...
at points I wish for the songs to take a dark turn but I think Freeman is using other peoples words to describe his ordeals
it is at points really powerful

Upon seeing the title of this thread, I thought of this picture from a game of Scrabble that my friends Alex and Brittany played at 5 a.m. in July, 2010.

So, if you check out Ween's Facebook page, you can apparently call or text Aaron Freeman to tell him what you think of his new album. The number is (609) 542-0751.

I sent him a text.
