Anyone read Kirkman's new book HARDCORE this week? Fun sci-fi stuff about a government agency the uses an injectable device to turn people into puppet assassins. Based on the first issue I'm guessing it'll be a short run, but worth reading nevertheless.

I checked out a few of the Bat-Family books that I don't normally bother with this week in an attempt to squeeze every last bit of flavor out of this Court of The Owls storyline. Unfortunately Birds of Prey and Red Hood are just as lame as they were at the beginning of this relaunch, but Batgirl was surprisingly good. I miiiiight have to give Babs another shot.

i should probably check those audio files out...also im in love with MANHATTAN PROJECTS. its so good. the blurb at the end of the newest issue sums it up pretty well for me, but its kinda spoilery SO JUST GO READ THIS BOOK!

i didnt pick up HARDCORE, but i thought it was one of those 'pilot season' books? if theres more than just the one i may check it out. i got burned on pilot season after hickman and rocafort (whom i shockingly like a lot. hes not the kind of artist i normally even give a chance, but something about his stuff appeals to me) put out a rad comic called THE CORE that only got one issue :(

Besides TWD, Invicibles and his run of Ultimate X-men, I've found the rest of Kirkman's work to be very mehhhh...

Hmmmm, almost making me want to check back into Manhattan Projects.
Well maybe down the road.

I've barely cracked my FCBD stuff, read it, but didn't absorb much.
I have been reading, and almost finished, the Showcase collection I got of The Losers.
The art is just great, and the Kubert covers beyond great.
Story wise, they take a lot of big jumps to compress everything into the page count available, but still solid work.

I have read thru Bullet Proof Coffin #4 only once so far, and must rededicate some time to it.
Agree w/ Joe's assessment.

This is a pretty good read about one man's reasons for not reading Marvel stuff. The second half is basically about how NEW AVENGERS sucks, and he makes a pretty compelling point about something that's very easy to gloss over in context of the book. Comics really aren't for kids anymore and heroes are usually anything but.

Kids still like comics though. I do not think its the same as adults. Newer comics are defiantly geared towards adults with dedication to buying monthlys. I work at a middle school and have been bringing in some of my comics for my students to read. They enjoy the origin primers like DC Origins but kinda feel lost when reading things like Crisis on Infinite Earths and Kingdom Come. One of my students read Flashpoint in 20 minutes and when I asked him about it he said it was alright. There is a subtle maturity in story and themes which I feel is sometimes now lost on younger readers. this is why Manga is more popular with middle and elementary schoolers.

EDIT: Manga like One Piece, Fruits Basket, Bleach, Deathnote...there are other more adult Mangas like Pluto and Akira which are awesome.

Speaking of which, I love reading silver and golden age comics when it was directed towards kids. I love reading how batman and aquaman battle smugglers and pirates. Comics nowadays are incredibly dense and have stories detailing madness, loathing and self doubt. This is why it is facinating.

Maybe try giving the kids some comics that aren't big continuity-wrangling stories :P

I dunno I can't imagine what kids these days might like. If I put myself in 13yo mindset everything I think of would be stupid. Daredevil: why doesn't he use guns? This is stupid. Punisher: Why doesn't he have powers? This is stupid. I bet the Uncanny/Wolverine & The X-Men books would go over well with that age group. But since AvX is all about whether to kill a teenager or put keep her in custody of two different agencies, I'd imagine both X-Men and Avengers would seem like total buttholes so I'm not sure why teens would want to follow either after this. Most comics these days certainly aren't meant for younger children (ages 5-10?) but I don't think many of them are so violent that they aren't ok for young teens. Problem is, I suppose, that nobody's actually writing for them. There has generally always been at least one book in the X-Men umbrella aimed towards teenagers specifically but now it's all about relating to the greater Marvel-U than relating to characters. I would think teenagers would have liked Generation Hope, but alas it was not long for this world. Maybe this generation of teens is so hard to get a grasp of that it's impossible? But then again I'm not a teenager nor do I really know any, I just assume they are all annoying punks.

Anyways what I really came in here to say was that I talked to my dad today. He told me he grabbed that new POPEYE book and didn't like it. He's well familiar with the old Popeye strips and he said it just didn't feel or read the same. Can't say I know enough to agree or disagree with his assessment. But hey my pops is buying/reading comics every now and then, so that's cool.

Yeah you know I noticed that when I was really excited showing them my notebook with the notes on the DC multiverse and they were slowly backing out of the room with horrified face. "You see Earth-2 is actually all the character from the Silver Age compared to....HEY WHERE IS EVERYONE GOING"

there is A LOT of things you said which are true and thought provoking. Most comics are written for the older generation as I think since the 80's its market has gotten more mature. the idea of the superhero has changed and most interesting story-lines play the idea of mythology, existence, and morality. This is exponentially true with art-comics which has been increasingly popular. I think the popularity of comic book movies though is increasing interest in comic books as the basis for enjoyment comes with knowing the character and sharing experiences through story arcs. The problem arises when the act of collecting comics and keeping story-lines coordinated is a mature artform when an 8 year old will pick out anything that has iron man on it despite the writer, artist, publisher or whether or not its a cereal box or not a cereal box. I think the type experience we have with comics is very different than what 8 years have but I think the enthusiasm is similar. Whether or not it last is entirely up to the person.

I could have sold you this cheap but oh well. It has its moments. Better than GALACTIC STORM, at least. The higher concept of the book is really cool, it's just a 70s Avengers story so it also has so much 70s Avengers goofiness.

Before the Minibosses show at Bookmans today I found Daniel Clowes' ICE HAVEN and a HC edition of CONCRETE: COMPLETE SHORT STORIES 1986-1989 (all the Dark Horse Presents stuff) that is signed and numbered by Mr. Chadwick himself. Unfortunately the dunce who previously owned it rubber cemented the first and last pages to the insides of the cover. They are just filler pages with no content so it's not really a big deal, but why would you do that?
