Gradius 3 for SNES was my first shmup experience, and definitely has the most sentimental value for me. i meant to play through it sometime during my extended weekend in Seattle but never got around to it

I think that the only way you're going to nail a 10 (or 11) girl is if you have millions of dollars, a non maniac mansion, a bichon frise with a bow on it's head, a yacht, and multiple fast cars! i'm so sorry :/

hell yeah, some of the tightest controls ever. and best of all, the hitbox in this game is only the head! makes for super precise bullet maze maneuvering. gets kinda outta control though. probably why it was only released in japan.esp.ra.de, one of the best shooters ever! check it out

The Dreamcast has my favorite shooters (Bangai-O, Rez, Cannon Spike*, and Mars Matrix**), but I'm REALLY fond of Genesis shooters right now. so many classics, from Thunder Force to Steel Empire to Gleylancer.
here is an article that goes over EVERY Genesis Shmup:
http://sega-16.com/G...xtravaganza.php
*Not really a shmup, per se, but close enough.
**Mars Matrix has the single best single-player mode in a shmup ever made. so many unlockables, and with fair prices!

you're a douchedrinker. Mame is the best way to experience THE best shooters that were ever made, unless you wanna have shitloads of huge arcade cabinets in your house.

i think you misunderstand the point.
Eric wanted to know which CONSOLE was best for shmups. that is why "MAME" is a cop-out. if you were going to be anywhere near accurate, you might say "JAMMA," but since every board is basically a console in and of itself, that's still lame.

I disagree. I totally prefer (real) consoles over MAME. With MAME you can just keep adding credits and keep dying as much as you want to, without any real need for skill to reach the end. I used to attempt beating Gradius Gaiden several times in a row, and only once achieving it. You could be totally wasted or stoned out of your mind, with severely limited coordination, and make it to the end of nearly all MAME shmups. I've done it many times, and it's not nearly as fun as the challenge of having to conserve lives.
It's the same with beat em ups. Arcade beat em ups and shoot em ups are just quarter munchers and credit pushers.

Looking back I doubt many would've thought it was that quality of a game, but it kept me interested. The levels were kind of ambigious, as I recall. You'd have open space that would scroll over several screens (from left to right), under your control. The space would get bombarded with ships you had to destroy, and the further you got, more exciting and weird enemies would start showing up. And of course there were power ups and those kind of goodies.
Then there was also Disposable Hero.
here's a youtube clip -
I always loved the boss at 2:40 in.
^If anyone wants to try this game I can add it wozz's amiga emulation thread.
