That is really lame. Supposedly session hijacking is impossible, so the only way to get hacked is if someone gets your password. Keyloggers are pretty rare. Phishing is very common, but I'd expect younger net savvy folks at the Shizz to be mostly immune to that. Much more common is using the same password at many websites and having one of them be compromised and turns out they stored their passwords as plaintext (idiots; just what you'd expect on systems that get hacked in the fast place). If you used the same password elsewhere, you should consider changing it immediately.

Well, I got cleaned out it looks like. I logged on this morning and all my gold was gone and a few pieces of amror were dunzo. At least I suppose it was hacked, they didn't take everything, which I thought was weird. I mean, I know I didn't have godly shit, but why take like my boots chest armor, and helm but nothing else? Sucks tho, had just bought a nice piece of chest armor, and lost 600k gold. God damn I hate thieves. So much.

Fuuuuuuck. :(

Actually, it looks like this is on Blizzard and is more widespread than I thought. I may not have been hacked (but it's still possible). I've been surfing around on the forums and there are many people with the same problem. Missing random pieces of gear, and/or gold etc. Fucking Blizzard is really dropping the ball. I've been a faithful customer for many of their games, but the way they have handled one of the biggest releases in the last decade is fucking pathetic. When has there NOT been server issues? Why is it on me to download an athenticator? If they are as necessary as Blizzard suggests they are, then why are people being charged for them at all (if they don't have a smartphone) or why aren't we told about them AS SOON AS WE INSTALL THE GAME? Now I have a "Failed to Update Tools" error and can't even launch the fucking game, which again is very widespread. It's just unreal, and I'm losing my patience. This game has been in development for years, they had plenty of time for testing, and retail has been live for 2 and a half weeks. This is weak and pathetic, and I'm fucking over it. I have no problem investing my time in games I enjoy and are supported well, but as it stands, I've logged 80 hours and now I'm back tracking. Fuck it.

Yeah.. for such a high profile release there sure are a lot of problems. Did WoW launch with this much crap? I feel like with how WoW-ed up this game is anyway, that's a helluva lot of years of experience to leverage towards making a seamless online experience. Or maybe they just need more servers. Who knows.

I am wondering DH, did you use a unique email/password combo that you have never used anywhere else in the past? While I doubt you have ever fallen for a phishing scam and keyloggers aren't common, any website you've been to in the past could have been hacked and had passwords stolen. Even Sony was hacked and the morons stored passwords as plaintext (a stupid, stupid thing... it should be illegal to do that). Smaller sites may be hacked without knowing it or be hacked and simply not report it. Or since it is small you may not hear about it.

There is no reason hackers would not store passwords for years since people reuse them for years. The older a password is, the more likely some hacker or group somewhere has got it sitting in a list waiting for an opportunity. And opportunities are surprisingly slim. What is a hacker going to do with my Amazon.com password? They can't read my CC info, and if they make a purchase I will get an email notification.

The one thing Blizzard may be doing wrong is that if your account is compromised, there is little or no further protection. Then again, what protection can they add without impacting gameplay? Do you want to type in a password every time you drop an item on the ground? The layer of protection they've chosen to add is the authenticator. They give away the authenticator app for free and they apparently sell the dongle at or below cost with free shipping. It's hard to ask for more.

If this is actually hacking of sessions, blizzards servers, or end user computers via a security hole in the client... then it is serious problem and serious bullshit. I think all of those are very unlikely though. If someone's account is compromised because their password was compromised in one of myriad ways, Blizzard has no control over that.

Na, it's the same email I've been using since 2001. However, this is the first time ever in my gaming 'career' that something like this has happened. And my password is pretty long with caps, lowercase, letter, numbers AND symbols. I'm in the military man, I know all about changing passwords, making sure the strength is good, phishing etc. Not only that, like you said, it should be far more rare for guys like peeps on this board to fall prey against stuff like that. But, it does happen. And I'm not saying I want so much security that it takes away from the game itself (again, the shit they have us do in the military for the sake of 'security' is maddening at times). But there has to be a happy medium. I can't justify dumping tons of my free time (which is far more limited when school starts back) only to get rollback and have to start over with gear/quests/levels. And you only get 2 rollbacks before use of the RMAH is restricted all together for you. The whole thing just stinks man, no two ways about it.

All that being said, I'm really not sure it was password related or if I was hacked at all. Again, something just doesn't seem right about all of it. Why not take everything? Or at least sell it to the in game vender then take all my gold? What I've been reading is some people are having an issue of items just straight up disappearing. Which kind of makes sense. I mean, why not take my 700 dps axe with 250 int? Or the rare ammy I have with nice stats, or the belt with 30+ all res and 15 mf with good int and vit? All of these items are worth cash also. It just doesn't make sense for them to leave any of those. In any case, I've got a ticket open with Blizzard and I'm using the authenticator, so hopefully this won't happen again and can get resolved asap. I'm out of town right now anyway, but I want to be able to play the game that I payed 60 bucks for as some point.

Having played through the campaign once and gotten most of the way through act 1 on Nightmare... I'm kind of bored of the game. I was initially excited by the depth of the combat options but I've already found my optimal strategy so it's becoming a mindless grind.

I dunno, maybe things will get more interesting. I know that even on medium difficulty acts 3 and 4 got really tough and hectic. Maybe that will be more exciting in Nightmare.

Maybe I should try getting into the multiplayer game more. I've played solo almost exclusively so far, save for a couple short sessions with Ashane, which were pretty fun.

I'm with you, about halfway through Act 1 on Hell and am a little burned out. Will take some time off and will come back when I want some more (maybe in a week or so).

Although I'm not tired of the genre and am actually really looking forward to Torchlight II

I don't think anyone here is falling for phishing scams. Keyloggers are a possibility but I think the greatest threat is password reuse.

However, you said your gold was gone though? Is there even a way to get rid of gold in game? I don't think it's possible to drop it or give it away. The only way to get it to another player is via the gold auction house. Hacker A would need to buy a dummy item put up for auction by Hacker B for an exorbitantly high cost equal to exactly the amount of gold in your stash. Blizzard ought to be able to look at your play history and determine if you dropped a bunch of items on the ground and certainly a weird auction giving away all your gold should show up in your auction logs.
