Fuuuuuuck.Well, I got cleaned out it looks like. I logged on this morning and all my gold was gone and a few pieces of amror were dunzo. At least I suppose it was hacked, they didn't take everything, which I thought was weird. I mean, I know I didn't have godly shit, but why take like my boots chest armor, and helm but nothing else? Sucks tho, had just bought a nice piece of chest armor, and lost 600k gold. God damn I hate thieves. So much.

Actually, it looks like this is on Blizzard and is more widespread than I thought. I may not have been hacked (but it's still possible). I've been surfing around on the forums and there are many people with the same problem. Missing random pieces of gear, and/or gold etc. Fucking Blizzard is really dropping the ball. I've been a faithful customer for many of their games, but the way they have handled one of the biggest releases in the last decade is fucking pathetic. When has there NOT been server issues? Why is it on me to download an athenticator? If they are as necessary as Blizzard suggests they are, then why are people being charged for them at all (if they don't have a smartphone) or why aren't we told about them AS SOON AS WE INSTALL THE GAME? Now I have a "Failed to Update Tools" error and can't even launch the fucking game, which again is very widespread. It's just unreal, and I'm losing my patience. This game has been in development for years, they had plenty of time for testing, and retail has been live for 2 and a half weeks. This is weak and pathetic, and I'm fucking over it. I have no problem investing my time in games I enjoy and are supported well, but as it stands, I've logged 80 hours and now I'm back tracking. Fuck it.my words exactly. fucking sucks. i love how they're patching for game balance and so far unable to solve problems that would make most people want to just quit.

There is no reason hackers would not store passwords for years since people reuse them for years. The older a password is, the more likely some hacker or group somewhere has got it sitting in a list waiting for an opportunity. And opportunities are surprisingly slim. What is a hacker going to do with my Amazon.com password? They can't read my CC info, and if they make a purchase I will get an email notification.
The one thing Blizzard may be doing wrong is that if your account is compromised, there is little or no further protection. Then again, what protection can they add without impacting gameplay? Do you want to type in a password every time you drop an item on the ground? The layer of protection they've chosen to add is the authenticator. They give away the authenticator app for free and they apparently sell the dongle at or below cost with free shipping. It's hard to ask for more.
If this is actually hacking of sessions, blizzards servers, or end user computers via a security hole in the client... then it is serious problem and serious bullshit. I think all of those are very unlikely though. If someone's account is compromised because their password was compromised in one of myriad ways, Blizzard has no control over that.

All that being said, I'm really not sure it was password related or if I was hacked at all. Again, something just doesn't seem right about all of it. Why not take everything? Or at least sell it to the in game vender then take all my gold? What I've been reading is some people are having an issue of items just straight up disappearing. Which kind of makes sense. I mean, why not take my 700 dps axe with 250 int? Or the rare ammy I have with nice stats, or the belt with 30+ all res and 15 mf with good int and vit? All of these items are worth cash also. It just doesn't make sense for them to leave any of those. In any case, I've got a ticket open with Blizzard and I'm using the authenticator, so hopefully this won't happen again and can get resolved asap. I'm out of town right now anyway, but I want to be able to play the game that I payed 60 bucks for as some point.

I dunno, maybe things will get more interesting. I know that even on medium difficulty acts 3 and 4 got really tough and hectic. Maybe that will be more exciting in Nightmare.
Maybe I should try getting into the multiplayer game more. I've played solo almost exclusively so far, save for a couple short sessions with Ashane, which were pretty fun.

Having played through the campaign once and gotten most of the way through act 1 on Nightmare... I'm kind of bored of the game. I was initially excited by the depth of the combat options but I've already found my optimal strategy so it's becoming a mindless grind.

I'm with you, about halfway through Act 1 on Hell and am a little burned out. Will take some time off and will come back when I want some more (maybe in a week or so).
Although I'm not tired of the genre and am actually really looking forward to Torchlight II

However, you said your gold was gone though? Is there even a way to get rid of gold in game? I don't think it's possible to drop it or give it away. The only way to get it to another player is via the gold auction house. Hacker A would need to buy a dummy item put up for auction by Hacker B for an exorbitantly high cost equal to exactly the amount of gold in your stash. Blizzard ought to be able to look at your play history and determine if you dropped a bunch of items on the ground and certainly a weird auction giving away all your gold should show up in your auction logs.
