It wasn't until I had been through this entire process, and I was talking about potential security threats with an expert, that I realized that my password security might not have been as airtight as I thought. The password I've been using for my Battle.net account was the same one I used to use on services such as Twitter and PSN before they were potentially compromised through well-publicized hacking scandals. I've updated most of my crucial accounts with much more secure, unique passwords since then, but I'd forgotten to change my Battle.net password in that time (and simply forgot that the old password was in any way insecure).
Note the reused password compromised from another site that was hacked. For those who swear up and down that they would never fall for a phishing scam (probably true) and do not have any viruses (might be true), I'm guessing this is the culprit.

Na, it's the same email I've been using since 2001. However, this is the first time ever in my gaming 'career' that something like this has happened. And my password is pretty long with caps, lowercase, letter, numbers AND symbols. I'm in the military man, I know all about changing passwords, making sure the strength is good, phishing etc. Not only that, like you said, it should be far more rare for guys like peeps on this board to fall prey against stuff like that. But, it does happen. And I'm not saying I want so much security that it takes away from the game itself (again, the shit they have us do in the military for the sake of 'security' is maddening at times). But there has to be a happy medium. I can't justify dumping tons of my free time (which is far more limited when school starts back) only to get rollback and have to start over with gear/quests/levels. And you only get 2 rollbacks before use of the RMAH is restricted all together for you. The whole thing just stinks man, no two ways about it.
All that being said, I'm really not sure it was password related or if I was hacked at all. Again, something just doesn't seem right about all of it. Why not take everything? Or at least sell it to the in game vender then take all my gold? What I've been reading is some people are having an issue of items just straight up disappearing. Which kind of makes sense. I mean, why not take my 700 dps axe with 250 int? Or the rare ammy I have with nice stats, or the belt with 30+ all res and 15 mf with good int and vit? All of these items are worth cash also. It just doesn't make sense for them to leave any of those. In any case, I've got a ticket open with Blizzard and I'm using the authenticator, so hopefully this won't happen again and can get resolved asap. I'm out of town right now anyway, but I want to be able to play the game that I payed 60 bucks for as some point.
If you aren't entirely burnt out on the experience I can help you get some stuff back, or stuff off the AH in the meantime. I don't have a ton of money, but it's probably enough to get a few decent pieces.
I want to mate with someone else who has a monobrow, just to see if our progeny will be born with thicker ones, and so on until our great-great-great-great-grandchildren are born with furry bookshelves on their foreheads.
and if shit goes sour... girls may come and go, but i'll always have pokemon......

Yeah I could help too, I usually just sell that stuff. But I'll start saving, what was it, Barbarian gear?

Yeah this is what I'm talking about. I just don't think I got hacked or w/e. I think it's more a server issue, but of course Blizzard won't admit to that. I do hate burning up a rollback on something like this, but I guess I'm going to go ahead and do it.I haven't played any after the 1.0.2a patch. A friend of mine said that people were complaining about missing items and character as well as client crashes. That seems like a problem.
But na, I'm not anywhere close to being 'burned out'. I know that Diablo is a grind, and I knew that before the game launched. Just kinda sucks when we're all making improvements incrementally and then something like this happens and sets you back a few days. I have been reading more on theorycrafting and the math behind the scenes if anyone is interested. Arreat Summit was the authority for Diablo 2, and it looks like a guy from diablonut has done most of the datamining for a lot of early info. The forum I've been checking out is here:
http://diablo.incgam...orums/forum.php
Pretty solid site with good discussion about secondary stats, budgets (per item slot), and builds. Really good reads on the early info collected from the game. I'll be around tomorrow night though. I'm planning on making next week a huge push to get more elite gear. A dude on that forum said he runs nightmare gold find runs (for speed, since gold drops dont seem to change drastically between difficulties) with 180% gf and nets 200k an hour. Thats a pretty good rate. I think the best I've done so far is 100-150k an hour and that was last Wednesday with Ashane in hell. I want to be able to get a decent 1h weapon with a good shield or source and start getting geared for inferno. Just gonna have to farm the gold to get there.

Yeah, I've actually been doing this a little bit lately since I picked up a set of gold find gear. Doing runs of Act 3 Siegebreaker through Azmodan on Nightmare wearing all gold find gear (150%, 225% with 5 stacks/NV). There's more champs and clustered packs of enemies (i.e. those spiders in the Arreat Caves) than anywhere else in the game I'm aware of. Takes me about a half hour and I get 100k, so sounds like I'm going at the same rate as this dude. It's mind-numbingly boring though, lol, so I haven't been playing D3 much since you went out of town... I'll usually just pop in to do a run or two and check the AH.A dude on that forum said he runs nightmare gold find runs (for speed, since gold drops dont seem to change drastically between difficulties) with 180% gf and nets 200k an hour. What I'd really like to do are chest runs in Inferno since apparently there's people making millions a day off em, even though they've probably been nerfed at this point. There was a lot of interesting talk over at d2jsp a few days ago about this particular chest run that's confirmed working. Apparently you can bug the game and get the quest in Act 3 Inferno by joining a pub game of the same quest in Hell and then leaving if you're not good enough to quest up to that point on your own... You can also get Tyrael somehow and have him fight the hard stuff for you. My only concern is there's no way I'm joining any pub games with so many people getting hacked...
Rize and I got to The Butcher in Inferno a couple days ago, but we couldn't take him out... I tried soloing him later on and could only get him down to 1/3 health on my best attempt. Definitely gotta gear up better. I think some runs of Skeleton King on Inferno might be worthwhile for potential rares to sell on the AH instead of nm gf runs. Either way, let's give The Butcher a shot when you're back tomorrow.

My first Inferno butcher kill took about 10-12k dps and ~ 25k hp and a solid number of attempts getting him to 10-20% and then getting RNG'd by the floor + chains or hitting the enrage timer. Skeleton King runs + some AH thrifting and you'll be able to kill the Butcher no problem.

"Oh, I'm just gonna play to the next checkpoint."
"Oh, I'm just gonna find some items on the auction house before I log off."
"Well, I bought some items so might was well go back into the game and equip 'em."

In Diablo 2 Blizzard managed the game's economy only to the extent needed to keep players playing (i.e. for people to have fun). In Diablo 3 they are managing the economy in a way designed to make money as the first priority. Keeping players playing is a huge part of this of course. Without volume of players, all the items generated by the early players will be more than enough to sate the remaining players keeping prices low. Basically, if the number of players is growing, then things are well. If the number is shrinking, then the value of items is shrinking and they have to put a tight clamp on new item generation to maintain the value of items that are up for auction.
Blizzard has a difficult design problem in D3. How do you make rare and highly desirable items that people are willing to pay top dollar for? You have to make sure they are both scarce and necessary for survival (Inferno mode). But how do you keep players playing when the gear they need isn't available for a reasonable cost? This is a catch-22. Blizzard would have done better to just focus on making the game fun. If the game is fun and lots of people play it, the RMAH will take care of itself. They don't need expensive items, they could just take the 15% on micro transactions.
In D2 I felt I was being entertained. In D3 I feel like I'm being exploited. And yet I can't wait to get home and keep playing. The game mechanics are still good for now. The AH to me just functions like a shop in an RPG. I grind for gold and then spend it. However, once the RMAH goes live I think I will have to quit. I'm not spending a dime of real money, and if I sell in game gear for real money the same rule applies. That money is going to my bank account. So basically the shop will be gone, but the shop is clearly essential to proceeding. So I'm enjoying it while I can.
Maybe I'll play again later after a big patch that fixes things. Actually, I'm guessing that a big update that fixes things to some extent will accompany the launch of the RMAH. They will need the excitement to counteract the negative effects of the RMAH.

Hell is hard for a monk, getting stepped on like an autumn leaf. I still haven't found a build that I'm in love with.
