Honestly, I think that 5 needs some more love. I played through the immensely superior GBA version not long ago, and I really enjoyed it.

Ah, but maybe not as the series introduction.

And who voted for II? STONE HIM!

This must be someone thinking FF2 (US version). I can't come up with any other reason why someone finds fun in spending hours attacking your own party members to make them tougher.

My vote goes to I.

That's what I voted. It's pretty grindy, and the pacing of the "adventure" is much more plodding than IV or VI (the only other two I've played), but it's "classic." IV is a VERY close second (and might be first, depending on your criteria) for sheer beauty of artwork and soundtrack. Difficulty is pretty low, and pacing is brisk (at least in the SNES version). VI is just freaking epic, and I'd probably not do that one first. Can't comment on II, III, V, or VII at this point.

It isn't in the poll, so 12 of course.

Hey everybody! Remember this thread? I finally got around to setting up a proper emulation environment so I'm excited to say that I am finally going to begin my Final Fantasy journey shortly, probably starting this week.

I chose to start the series with Final Fantasy IV, and then assuming I am as into it as everyone seems to indicate I will be, then move on to VI and then VII. (PSX emulation is taking a bit longer to get sorted, but I have yet to try getting it set up while sober so...) I want to thank everyone for their responses and ideas in this thread, I knew that there would be some pretty strong opinions on this and that's why I put the question out there. But yeah, I will start FFIV this week. Look forward to some very frustrated-sounding posts from me on this topic soon. I have also started playing Super Metroid for the first time ever, so when I get frustrated by all the spell casting and whatever else not, I can go blow up some aliens to take my mind off it.

I agree, FFIV is classic style, but the best exponent of it.

I dunno, I really liked FF3 JP (translated ROM). The music is top notch and the gameplay pretty solid. The best one out of the 3 NES FFs. I highly recommend it.

Finally started the game. I like the plot, how I'm basically telling myself I ain't gonna work on the King of Baron's farm no more. I like the character designs, and how in overworld mode my helmet looks like it's a stylish haircut. So far I have only made it to Kaipo and have been getting used to the battle style by grinding a bunch in the desert outside. I've been debating whether I should go back to the first town that I apparently totally skipped, but I think I may just press on to the cave after honing my fight skills some more. So far I dig this game. Thanks again to everyone for your advice!

Newt: Mo is playing through III right now as well, and since I suspect I will probably continue playing more, I may end up playing III before VI or VII. We'll see!~

This thread really makes me want to hack my old copy of FF7PC so I can play it on my laptop. MIDI music for the win.
