I cuss all the fucking time because I grew up poor and that's what everyone else did, so that's how I learned to talk. I think just explaining it away as behavior of the uneducated is accepting too easy of an answer. It's more like a dialect or accent than indicative of intelligence. It's simply speaking like the people you grew up around spoke, which is exactly how everyone else learned how to speak.

My parents cuss every other word in every sentence. I don't. I cuss but not as a casual thing since I caught myself doing it when I was about fifteen and saw how pointless it was.

We don't be needing these sentence enhancers every 5 seconds.

Wow, that example given by cetera is pretty despicable.

Most of you here (especially those of you who have met me) know that I am a big guy, and I've been the target of unprovoked insults and attacks on my character based on my appearance in the past. It's not really appreciated or justified, and yelling "hey fatass!" out a car window gains you nothing except making you and the friends you're trying to impress look like douchebags, especially since the person you're yelling at is usually pretty aware of it. As such, it really pains me to see others make any sort of xenophobic, racist, prejudiced, or homophobic slurs against others, and I prefer not associate myself with anyone who uses them because it shows a complete lack of respect and intelligence. I'm not perfect myself and won't say I've never had preconceived notions about others before, nor am I above making fun of someone sarcastically if we're friends who both understand that it isn't being used seriously, but the level of intolerance shown in the world from folks like cetera's example makes me truly sick.

Yeah, I think it's very disappointing that what seemed to be a wholesale rejection of prejudice and intolerance in the early 90's is now derided as "PC" or whatever.

I found myself a couple years ago starting to adopt words like "gay" or "faggy" as derrogatories, but I'm trying to break that habit. I don't think that kinda language has any place in modern (or any) vernacular, so long as non-straight people continue to be harassed/attacked/ridiculed/etc. Ditto with any other slur against other minority groups.

I'm even trying to avoid using language like "rednecks" or "hillbillies" as derrogatories, because not everybody who lives in rural America fits the stereotype(s).

The whole notion gets a bit sticky when there's those out there that wear these names like a badge of honor, making it a derogatory statement only in specific situation and the manner in which you say it.

What I mean is don't think 'that person says fuck a lot, they must be dumb.' Think 'they probably grew up poor.'

I don't see how being poor has any more to do with it than being uneducated or just being around people who don't give a shit. I was in middle school once, I used to say fag all the time. Then one day I just sort of thought about it for half a second and realized it's a totally lazy and stupid insult and I stopped using it since. Many people just don't think about that. I don't think anyone who says stuff like "fag" or "i could be banned soon" is inherently less intelligent, I just think they are ignorant and have probably never had to think about what those words mean.

One time a guest was at my mom's house for a get together. My mom has a bench swing in the back yard but the swing wasn't attached, leaving just a wooden frame. This dude straight up said to my mom "Is that where you hang your i could be banned soon?" It was a joke to him, and it made me like him less than I already did. I dunno, I just don't see a situation where I would ever think it is alright to say something like that, so it's baffling when people are so blasé about it.

I swear a whole fuckin' hell of a shitload, I mean god damn. Part of it I learned from family, part from peers, part from TV and whatnot. At this point though, being 28 years old, I'm not gonna put that responsibility on anyone but myself.

I only seem to curse when I'm around friends I've known for a long time or when I'm frustrated or angry.

I remember when cursing as a kid was some kind of cool factor status raising thing. I guess the times are moving forward but not for everyone.

I just found this thread so I am going to paste what I said in 1160:

I'm really not sure what makes you think those slurs are appropriate and appreciated on this board.

For real, dude. Tone it down. You could at least call them "southerners".

Wooah :o

I am sorry.

The slurs were not appropriate and I don't stand by them.. Didn't even remember typing any of that until I went back a page or two here to see what I'd missed. I have been trying to avoid Theshizz during the days when I would drink, but it has become such a part of my regular routine that I must have come on and started reading/posting anyway. Because I visit the shizz pretty much every time I check OCR, just out of habit, which is several times a day, even if I don't post. I don't even remember when I would have typed that because I played DOTA 2 with a friend for like 3 hours last night and then went straight to bed at like 6am. And before Dota 2 I tried to record a playthrough of the Diablo 3 beta and deleted it because the frame rate was like, 3fps... and it didn't record the audio.

Anyway long story short, I'm sorry for those slurs and I didn't mean them.

If anyone reported that post(s) that is perfectly fine, and if not for having been quoted I would have wiped those words from existence just now to prevent further offenses, but the damage is done. :(

To go into further detail, I was drunk, I didn't remember making that post. The person I had to fight was not gay, nor was he actually a redneck. He was from Pittsburgh. I just used the term redneck to refer to him as a "country music concert-goer". As for the use of the word "faggot" it is entirely regrettable and I am sorry. As mentioned in this thread it was not used in the context of anyone's sexual orientation, but still there's no justification for using that type of slur and saying I was intox is no comfort for anyone who was offended by it. I'm just sorry that it happened and what I wrote in that post doesn't reflect my feelings towards any specific type of person, except drunk people who get in a sparring mood after a Rascall Flatts concert. Hate that guy. Took over a year for my deltoid to heal. :/

History time:
When I was 15, I used to be a homophobe, called anything I thought was stupid to be "gay", and believed that homosexuals should move "to an island" so they couldn't reproduce and die off or something??? Looking back, it was a disgusting point of view. Despicable.

However, starting at age 20, I started to accept the idea that I was bi-curious, and now I'm pretty much 80% heterosexual.
Spoiler

---

In other words: if you ever hear me use the word "fag", take it with a grain of salt, because it's almost a double-edged sword to me. Like arise_shine, however, I'm trying to break the habit, because 1) the homosexual awareness movement as of recently is a wonderful thing and using derogatorries--no matter the intention--not only brings homosexuals down but it also makes you look like a homophobe, and 2) all it does it gets everybody's *panties in a bunch.*

*I'm pretty sure this is also a derogatory, but I don't want to get my panties in a bunch explaining how "panties in a bunch" could or could not be offensive, depending on the intention

I was indoctrinated to be racist and homophobic by my parents growing up and have slowly torn those layers of hate away. I feel safe in my city because the black family I grew up next to still lives here, and their son -- who was my friend as a kid -- is a police detective here now. It's the most amazing experience in the world to live near a family you've known for your entire life. And I have a gay friend who is one of my most valued friends in my entire life. He is helping me study religious things that I never would have understand, and is also helping me through a lot of personal issues. I do not have hate for any of these people, it was just an unfortunate rant fueled by alcohol and I am sorry for it.

I seriously think you consider laying off the alcohol for a while. It seems like whenever you post drunk here it leads to dumb shit so if you can't control yourself when you're drunk maybe you shouldn't drink at all. Just a suggestion.

I think you hit it on the head with the "uneducated" classification.
Those with limited vocabularies use racial slurs in derogatory manner not because they are homophobic (well, some are) but because they lack the knowledge of a more appropriate word. Your example is the perfect representation of this.

ALOTTA' STUFF!

Okay, I'll stop now and leave time for replies. Just getting some thoughts down and seeing where they go.

Sam, the Neon Orange Knight

All I can comment on this is this: You cannot Legislate Morality within reason.
It is the attempt to find the unreasonable that is the end effect of Legislative bodies and government in general.
It may not be 100% intended, but in my opinion this is what happens.
When something is unreasonable, as in Murder or Theft, you get hauled in or fined or whatever depending on the severity of the unreasonable action.
When they do something unreasonable, they get ejected, impeached, sued or what have you depending on the severity of their actions, position and times. Position, usually meaning job, and Times meaning: The politics and issues of the populace at that time.
There are many more factors of course, but I attempt brevity here.
Good, thought provoking opinion, Sam.

To all of the left leaning shizzies hating on the right's intolerance: you need to seriously examine your own side. Leftist racism is much more effective and insidious than that of the right, because the right is really blatant and bad at being racist.
-...
So people who could never normally say what they want, now all of the sudden can, so they do, and they're nerd raging assholes about it. It's like if the worst employee at the store suddenly became the boss - he'd be fucking insane to everyone, just like he always wanted.

Overall, I think society is balkanizing. We're being split up into smaller and smaller interest groups against each other, and it's not going to end well for anyone.

Yeah, cussing, woo. Learned it from a "Poor Town" too. I do Phono-linguistic acrobatics just to avoid cussing as much as possible.

I don't know about the racism, I do my best not to be and 9 times out of 10 people I meet don't care, or are racist purely from bad experiences.
I have had "bad experiences" with racist black people, and I really don't care; those were stupid kids. I've met many a decent person that wasn't white before and since the experience.

Insano-boss situation, check. Hopefully we start to evolve away from such childish behaviors through the learning processes, myself even being guilty of it at one point or in a way or three.

I can't say for sure that it "won't end well for anyone", it always ends well for at least someone in at least one way. Even if indeed we are Balkanizing.
They have really awesome cigarettes or so It's advertised on an old tin I saw.
