"every man is a potential rapist" is probably difficult for most men to wrap their heads around b/c they have the freedom to not think twice about being victimized.

Considering it's a tiny minority of men who are rapists and that a minority of rapes are of strangers, I'd prefer women to not assume I'm a potential rapist.

I think a lot of this knee-jerking has a lot to do with inexperience with different cultures or groups. How many of you have black or gay or ethnic friends? I mean, seriously? Stereotypes are true. I'm sorry I'm not sorry. And if you any of you had any ethnic or gay friends, you would know this. If you don't, then you're just incredibly thick-headed. Does that mean every single person in a group adheres to that particular stereotype? Of course not. That would be stupid. Does a very large percentage? Sure. Black people eat a lot of fried chicken, eat watermelon, and drink orange soda. Asian people are typically short, eat a lot of rice, and some sound like "ching chong sing ling" when they talk. White people drink milk, eat mayonnaise, are incredibly uptight (as evidenced in this thread), and are typically god awful dancers and very stiff-like in their body language. Some of these traits occur because of mother natures roll of the dice, others do not. Would it seem racist of me to say that there are a lot of black people in the NBA? Do I give a fuck if it does?

Are any of you incredibly incapable of making simple observations or is reality just incredibly difficult for you to assess? If you would like to spend your life with your head in the sand, that's your business, but it doesn't negate the fact that things exist for one reason or another. And if it exists, why can't we talk about it? I'm the only white person at my work, the rest being black, and we make racial jokes about one another all the time and no one gives a shit. Nobody gets offended, nobody throws up their arms and cries "hate speech", we just laugh, accept our obvious differences, and go on about our day. SO WHAT if somebody says something you don't like? That doesn't give you an excuse to get up on your soapbox or to receive a kiss on the foot. Get over it.

There is quite a difference between someone using a word out of the sincere hatred of a group and using it casually. Anybody who cannot tell the difference, again, needs a head check.

Wow I never thought about it but you're right. Every single one of my gay friends is somewhere between Elton John and Richard Simmons, and each of my black friends is somewhere between Biggie and Tupac. What a revelation.

on a different note- and sorry to continue using you as an example Brandon- can i just say that i don't get where 'fuck rascal flatts' came into this

i mean yeah their fans are pretty rowdy types, but that's not the band's doing. and just because you like country music does not necessarily make you a bigoted redneck! i am personally a huge country music fan (and incidentally am pretty fond of rascal flatts) and i'd like to hope i conduct myself a little better than the 'rednecks' mentioned in Brandon's post.

i just don't get arguments like that that say 'fuck that band' because of something a fan of that band did. the band has no control over that.

also Brandon i hope your injury recovers swiftly, and my hat is off to you for soldiering on at that gig in spite of it. and i'm with spook- might want to try stopping the alcohol intake, dude. i feel like a lot of the more inflammatory posts you make here are posts you're making while drunk. doesn't seem like booze is doing you any favours.

i had a friend in highschool- this nice quiet artistic black kid- and he would frequently bring kool-aid in the funny little pull-tab plastic bottles and eat his lunch out of a cleaned-out KFC bucket. he did this while intensely staring at any white students walking past him.

i'm not sure what the point or relevance of this story was, but that guy was awesome.

Side note: I took a class on race and the professor tried to convince me I don't look twice when walking down an alley when a white guy is following me but look three times if a black guy is following me. We argued and I got a C+...

I constantly think about being victimized on the street. I look over my shoulder every 30-150 steps.
I am paranoid to the max at night and in semi-isolated environments.
Never been accosted, possibly partially thanks to my alertness at these times, but there is always that chance; and I admit that I have an active fear of it.

EDIT: Funny thing is, I'm more afraid of White people than Black in these instances!
I don't know 100% why, but there is usually something off about White strangers in the Dayton area. Maybe I'm racist against White people?
I dunno', I don't feel like I hate myself.

Right, only a minority are raped by strangers (according to the half of assaults that actually get reported) so doesn't that say something? "Every man is a potential rapist"--this man is more likely to be my husband, relative, friend...

I know Snappleman was crass, but I don't think he said anything different than the kind of stuff you're saying right now. That's probably the kind of thing that prompted him to say any such things.
