I had mine long for 12 years, but cut it about 10 years ago.
I still remember the feeling.

But you'll get used to it.
And showering just became a LOT faster.

It takes so much time to grow back that you must be really sure before you cut your long hair. So by the time you do cut it, you're really sick of it, the negatives are seriously outweighing the positive, and that produces the nearly universal feeling of liberation that you've observed.
