I didn't end up buying that LP Jr. copy. I went back to look at it and it was clear the pickups weren't P90s. They were humbucker-sized clones of a P90, most likely original. Anyway, I didn't really like how it played, and they were only going to give me $100 for my Epiphone, so I passed. Speaking of SGs though, while I was there a guy brought in a beautiful '78 SG in a rare tobacco burst color. All original, and in good shape overall, but it needed a refret badly. I asked him how much he wanted for it and he said he'd take no less than $1200, which was too much if you ask me, considering that it barely played. I didn't stick around long enough to see if he sold it or what, but it sure was pretty. I think I'll ask about it next time I'm there.

This is hands down the best guitar I've owned. I'm still in that new guitar dizzy/woozy stage, but that could be the results of outgassing nitrocellulose lacquer as well.
On another note: my Warmoth SG should be done sometime this week, so I'll get some pictures up. I bought these two from my tax refund and profit sharing at work, but I've still got a bad case of Guitar Acquisition Syndrome and I'm considering another Warmoth build. That one's coming right out of my pocket so it's going to be a tough decision.

Well, if it had to go out, that would be the way to do it. I loved the neck on that thing! I don't suppose that part of it is salvageable is it?witness the death of my '85 japanese strat

fucking awesome!!!!
One of my 1st guitarra "projects" was putting the neck from that guitar on my old Japanese Jazzmaster, before it was blue. Do you remember why, Fred? I wore down the frets on the original neck so bad that I bought another neck for it, was I using your strat neck in the meantime? It was only for like a few weeks if I remember correctly.
Wow! That's awesome. Gotta keep the pics flowing as we all want to live vicariously with both the new guitar days and the projects. I'm really curious about the baked maple fretboards. The purists are all up in arms but I think it's a pretty cool idea. It's a new (made in 2011) Gibson SG Standard Limited. Pickups are stock 490R/498T and I love them so far. (I'm getting Bare Knuckle Nailbombs put in my Warmoth SG, so I'll have to see how how that sounds; I may put a set into this one in the future.) It's got a standard "rounded" neck, but it feels like they cut this one pretty thin, which is fine by me. Because Gibson is essentially unable to get rosewood, the fingerboard is "baked maple", which is smooth and hard like maple and (apparently) will darken up to look like ebony once treated with lemon oil.

I'm sort of new to Gibson still. You have 490R/498T. The 490s have Alnico 2 magnets just like 57 classics, and also just like Burstbuckers 1, 2, and 3. 498T is a 490T with an A5 magnet. Burstbucker Pro is a Burstbucker 2 (I think) with an Alnico 5 magnet. Also, they advertise the 490s as being like a 57 classic but hotter with more upper mids (which would work well in a SG I would think) which is sort of how they advertise the Burstbuckers (2,3) as sounding as well. Gah, pickups! They're maddening.
In my guitarra news, Sunday I swapped the 57 Classic back into the neck of the LP. I had to flip the magnet to get the phasing correct, but man, it sounds great, way better than the DGT neck, and together the pickups sound fantastic. I really wish I could have paid half and gotten just the DGT bridge pickup like I wanted to in the 1st place. Maybe I'll use the DGT neck as a bridge pickup in the Santana or something. It's got the low end covered very well and that's what that guitar could use.

Not really. A 498T is nothing like a 490. Think of the 490 as Gibson's version of the Pearly Gates, just slightly hotter than a standard PAF type. The 498 is more like a JB or Duncan Custom. Essentially a high output rock pickup. Here's some handy info from Gibson:498T is a 490T with an A5 magnet. Burstbucker Pro is a Burstbucker 2 (I think) with an Alnico 5 magnet.

So what's the difference between a 490T and a 57 classic? Maybe the PAF sticker on the bottom of the 57 smooths out the tones. I wish there was some definitive info on the web that showed exactly how you can make two humbuckers with the same magnets/wire/turns/other specs and make them sound different in a repeatable manner.

I ordered a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles decal for the headstock, the trem cavity is masked so it'll be yellow, and I'm trying to decide on the color for the pickups and knobs. I'm thinking red/white/red for the pickups, yellow knobs, and a red switch cap. I was considering a crunch lab and liquifire for the buckers. Any single coils that'd go nice with them?

I will have a very lightly used pair of those pickups quite soon- they are coming out of an RG. There's a Dimarzio Area of some kind in the middle but I don't know/remember what it is.I was considering a crunch lab and liquifire for the buckers. Any single coils that'd go nice with them?
