I've been having this slow, sad realization about the FF7 remake on PS4. We don't even know how many parts it's gonna be split into. Part 1 is just Midgar, and its 2 discs. I don't even know if my PS4 will still be working by the time the whole thing is done cause it's definitely got some issues these days. Is it gonna be 6 disc? 8? 10? Is it gonna finish out on the PS5 to hype people into buying one? I think I'm gonna have to wait for the eventual PC release.

Part 1 - PS4

Part 2 - PS4 + PS5

Part 3+ - PS5-only

I'm iffy even saying part 2 will be on the PS4 generation.

If part 1 stretches a 4-8 hiur segment of the original into a full 10-20 hour game, it's gonna be like a decade before we see the end of the story. Even if they don't pad out the next installments (I have a feeling they can't keep that level of stretching past Midgar), and even they try to compress other areas, I imagine part 2 will probably end at, like, present-day Nibelheim or maybe the Temple of the Ancients if you're lucky. Still not even out of disc 1 of the OG. I'ma be waiting for a pc release anyway so I look forward to trying it out in my 40s.

Frankly I don't have time to play FFVII again even without it being stretched out

All these console exclusivity windows mean for me it’s i’ll just wait for someone to post the story content on YouTube, then maybe buy in a couple years when it is 75% off

If the PS5 is backwards compatible with the PS4, that will lessen my worries about its staggered release.

Still not even out of disc 1 of the OG. I'ma be waiting for a pc release anyway so I look forward to trying it out in my 40s.

my take on it was that the Midgar section in the original is pretty dense with stuff to do and they're going to expand on that all in a meaningful way (hopefully...not just throwing a lot more filler into it.) Like give the rest of Avalanche more time to shine. And once you get out of Midgar a lot of the rest of the game is just the story bits and smaller locations. There's not really any other areas that you spend as much time in as you did in Midgar. A lot of it is just small little area based lore dumps until you move to the next place. I mean disc 3 in the original was just Northern Crater and the final battles. Which is way smaller of a dungeon than I remembered from the last time I played through 7. I could see Part 2 being up to City of the Ancients and The Big Moment and have it end where disc 1 ended. Then part 3 would just be everything beyond that up to the end. That's been my guess, at least. But who knows.

There are obviously areas they could expand on and make bigger the way they are with Midgar. Particularly Wutai or Cosmo Canyon. I mean hell probably Junon too. I also really think they might do way more with the Wutai War in it. But even if they do expand all these areas or more of them, I don't think all of those combined and expanded would warrant an entire part or disc. I recently went through all of 7 with as much of a fine tooth comb as I could for the podcast and the entire time doing that I was thinking of the remake and how it would handle the stuff going on after Midgar. This is where I landed with it, but even if I'm completely wrong about it, I am very excited to see what they do with it all.

Karl that sounds about right. Its hard for everyone not to speculate it to hell and compare it to the original in terms of pacing, locales, etc. but I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if (and when) its approached way differently. Like you said, most portions after Midgar are small and could possibly be combined if it serves the same ends for the lore.

I'm also approaching it completely optimistically, any departures are no problem since we'll always have the original, like you and Curtis said on the pod. I am actually a silent minority in enjoying the more recent FF entries (I enjoyed 13-2 & 3 and have 100's hours into 14) so I am psyched for what I've seen of the battle system so far in the demo. And they do have that turn based option for those who's last RPG was probably FF7 the first time.

And yeah it's probably going to get stretched across console generations. It seems possible they could release it all on PS4 (in addition to PS5/PC) since the first chapter runs fine on it. Squeenix does not turn down easy money.

It's also likely the timeline will accelerate a bit with the engine created. I'd also wager there's going to be copious DLC. Possibly in terms of battle arena challenges, side chapters, weapons & outfits. That's just how it is now. The vocal minority is going to endlessly hate on all of the above while the rest of us are too busy enjoying the game. Few JRPG's nail all: story, music, graphics, gameplay, and pacing anyway, but I'll be happy with ~3 of the above.

They're a capitalist company, of course not. However, the FFVII remake as it is is not really easy money for them. Easy money for them would just to repackage FFVII, and all of its spin offs for the PS4, Xbox1, PC, etc as the "Complete Remaster Collection" or something like that.

Other than sharing some story beats and characters they're literally building a whole new series and while it's an established IP, the sheer amount of work runs it at a risk as well as the fact that it's changing considerably. I doubt it'll do poorly but they are very ambitious with it for sure.

I'm curious with how they will break up the rest of the game and really Square Enix is in a "Damned if you Do, Damned if you Don't" position.

it would’ve been helpful if they got ahead of this and just gave a general outline what their overall plan was. I’m guessing they are probably not completely sure themselves

Whatever, we’ll get it all when we get it
