i am playing doomy trash power violence chug chug hardcore down tuned to B. E. A. D. tuning with splashes of metal here and there.
also my bass is a rickenbacker (lots of great mid range but some of the bottom end drops out) through a pevy (shut it) classic 400 tube head through 8 tens
any help would be great

the difference is mostly in the input and output capacitor value. there is usually a capacitor right off the signal from the input jack and one at the very last stage before the output jack. The lower these values, the more treble-y it sounds, the higher the value, the more bass-y it sounds. More complicated pedals require more changes than that but some are so simple that's it.
i guess to make suggestions, we gotta know what you don't like about your current setup (the rick through the big muff). i'm guessing it's probably not punchy enough, which is going to be a prevalent problem with any sort of distortion unless you use some sort of boost after the dirt pedal.

I played bass through a big muff for a long timeok so i need a new bass pedal, i'm playing through a big muff, not the bass big muff just a normal one. and want to upgrade to a bass big muff, are they all the same?

The American big muff (my favorite) is the best for gritty dirty tones with sum fuzz
The russian big muff (the black one) is good for real creamy fuzz tone
the bass big muff is cool, but i dont think it does as much as the other ones
to up the low end you could play through a bass balls
ps im down with pevy

if punch/low end is what you want, you might try adding an EQ pedal or a sans-amp (mig plays through that and it rips balls).
also, if i want something to be distorted and full of low end and really fill up the room, i add chorus and i'll also add the 5th to the note - so it's like a bass chord - instead of just playing the individual note.

Pretty sure this is just a modified Muff. The bluebeard fuzz
Used by the following:
Mastodon, Baroness, Torche, Tragedy, Medic
Ask mattm to sell you his, along with his gibson ripper
<edit> not to say it isn't good or anything, but there is a lot of "mystique" in the boutique pedal world that really doesn't need to be there.

I'm pretty sure it is too but the pedal is awesome and Sanford is a pretty rad dude worthy of supporting.
Also, 2nd on the meat smoke. somebody buy both of chad's "the road" pieces so he can get one.

Didn't mean to imply that these are in any way false. Just to merely imply that there is no magic and not a lot of mystery in many of the most popular and sought after boutique pedals, like so many people think there is.I'm pretty sure it is too but the pedal is awesome and Sanford is a pretty rad dude worthy of supporting.

i don't think i need more low end, just want it to cut more, i'm playing in drop b so it's pretty deep, so deep that i want to hear it better.
thanks for all the suggestions people, i'll probably keep my big muff (russian) and pick up the big muff for bass as well. or i might check out the blue beard.
question though, are all big muff bass pedals the same, what does the pie sign mean. or is that just a type of pedal?

Today you basically have the Big Muff Pi. The Bass version is tuned for bass, and the Sovtek one is made in Russia possibly with different parts.

There's a lot of basic and detailed info there. These guys helped design the Bluebeard, apparently.

Definitely. There are circuit boards for almost anything available on the internets. It really comes down to build quality a lot of the time.
Enough on pedals. Lets convince Chad to buy the Gibson Ripper. Far superior to that Rickenbacker

The Bass Big Muff is modeled off of the old Sovtek Big Muff\'s that were army green. That is supposed to be the Holy Grail of Big Muffness on bass. Expensive now becasue there are close to being vintage and some popular players use them. BUT! The new Bass Big Muff is \"based\" off of that cuircut but is updated with true bypass, (easier)9 volt connectivity, a switch that boosts bass makes it normal and then dry. So really it can be a real tone sculpting tool. Plus Big Muffs plus Tube amp=awesome!
