Maybe it has always been the case and I am just now noticing it now but do you guys see an awful lot of "Battle Of The Bands" nights being run around here? It's a little unsettling. Out of curiosity what are your opinions on BOTB nights?

I don't like them at all, they are so subjective it's ridiculous.
They don't promote comradery in the scene and make bands
more resentful of each other.

That's part of the reason why in some sects of the scene you
will see bands that have their own crowd, that doesnt' show
up till the band they are there for plays and then leaves as soon
as the band finishes their set.

The only people I can see that benefit from these events are the club owners themselves. They are getting bands to essentially play for nothing yet are reaping the rewards of those bands crowds...especially on slow nights like a Sunday or Monday which is when these things usually occur. It's almost ingenius how they found yet another way to not pay musicians for performing.

Personally, i think these battle of the bands are quite rediculous. Some of these bands aren't even judged on talent, just on how many people they have there to see them. That's a popularity contest...something i tried to leave behind in high school. We don't even enter them anymore, mostly because we like most other local bands, and when we enter them, we just win every single time... Sometimes we just show up, tell them who we are, and they just ask where to send the cash/check/recording contract/studio time/Guitar Center gift certificate/Rice-a-Roni, etc. Can we help it that we're extremely handsome, popular AND musically gifted?

I went to one recently. It was judged partly on stage presence and songwriting, but the majority was on draw.

But the biggest example of what a joke it was. The death metal band, with standard cookie monster vocals that you could not understand, won in the category of best songwriting?!?!?! And you couldn't make out a single word! Hilarious!

The old Vin Fiz line up played one once. It was at the Cajun House and we just wanted a chance to play there. That stage and sound system are sweet. The band that won played a Refreshment's cover. You can't imagine what happens to your ego when you lose like that!
