I hear a lot of "normal" music at my dance studio, and it's always fun to google the lyrics so that I can find the song afterwards. Y'all already mentioned Britney Spears & Katy Perry, but I'll post my song picks:

It's like they're kind of annoying, but then it grows on you. Also, I was going to post other artists work, but I feel like they're more like hip hop, than pop. Idk.

Oldschool pop that's 100% legit. FYI Todd played all the instruments himself on that song.

This is the greatest old school pop song ever written.

I didn't want to get all hair-splitty/pedantic, but pop is kinda hard to define anyway. For the purpose of this thread, I would say it's music that you've probably heard just by existing, i.e. stuff that you don't intentionally listen to - at least until you get addicted to it. :) - it's just on TV, at the grocery store, on your friend's radio, at sporting events, etc.

IMO, J-pop doesn't count because it isn't a shared experience among North Americans. Baby Metal is arguable I guess. (and I'm *assuming* here that North Americans make up the majority of the thread)

But ultimately, share whatever tasty candy music makes you happy and you want other people to hear! Being exclusionary kinda defeats the purpose of the thread.

What's considered pop in this context? Like anything 80-modern American? Would 80s Japanese pop like Toshiki Kadomatsu count? Or Modern J-pop?

I do think that the song/video for Call Me Maybe is pretty cute. I'm having a hard time coming up with anything else because I'm barely ever in stores or places where they play this and I don't seek it out.

Yo I have the seven inch for Brick By Boring Brick and have totally butchered it at karaoke. I love some PARAMORE (but am honestly indifferent to like 90% of their catalog)

They smashed it with this one for sure. It has always reminded me of my favorite Reptar songs but... I have a weird bias there :P

I don’t keep up with pop too well since I don’t hear it at work, so I’m mostly limited to stores. Uptown Funk is pretty solid, and Call Me Maybe has a great hook.

I want to also reiterate just how hard Toxic goes.

Is pop punk included in this thread? Cus if so I’m about to go off.

Pop is subjective, but anything with a big enough reach to get mainstream appeal should fit here.

Just went and +1'd everyone mentioning my girl Katy. Also thank Moony for posting some MJ, can't have a pop thread without the goddamn king.

There's way too much to share but I'll just go with a pretty recent one. It got kinda played out over time the and the Super Bowl probably ruined it, but I was bumping Sicko Mode for a good week or two and it's legit one of the better songs from last year. Kinda rare for a progressive rap/trap song with multiple tempo changes to catch on as much as this did. Top tier production, imo. Also if anyone wants some good parodies of the song look up the Animal Crossing noises version and especially Dicko Mode (which makes me laugh way more than I'd like to admit).

(warning, many asses are in this video)

I bump this on a regular basis. I think Ariana is kind of a shitty person and the more rich and famous she gets, the worse she seems to get, but she's got fucking pipes and her music overall kicks ass. I'm glad I grew out of my pretentious "pop music is lame" phase because it slaps and once we all embrace how great it is, the better off we'll all be in my opinion.

A recent trend I've been seeing in Western Pop is the usage of the soundcloud rapper triplet phrasing thing that's gotten huge...which makes sense given it's popularity but I find it really unsavory. Ariana does that a bit in this song but I've gotten used to it and over it. She does it a lot in her newer stuff too I think. Other great songs by her that I recommend: God Is A Woman and Into You

I also hated this K-Pop song when I first heard it years ago but I came around on it and love it now. Method Man dances in this video so he's co-signed her usage of his song which owns
