However, I know that opens up some weird stuff with money, and paying graphic artists but not being able to pay musical artists etc etc. So I just wanted to open this up and have a discussion with everyone about the possibility. Any thoughts?

Some discussion has been had in discord, but it should also be had here, for those who do not use the discord server.

I think it's a good idea. Now, if the music created was being used for other purposes other than just being a fun competition then yeah it would be pretty shitty. And there are prizes for the winner. I dunno, maybe some monetary awards too for first, second, third or something?

In most cases, we're taking away banner artists' time they could be spending on doing commission work, so rather than just helping us out for free, they're practically losing money. So, if possible, they should definitely get paid. But I'm against handing out money prizes to the contestants. Making music for DoD was always about fun and I'd like it to stay that way. Besides, nobody is required to enter a month, whereas the month must have at least some kind of banner.

If we're going to raise funds for banners, I'd rather do some sort of fundraising event instead of Patreon. Something like an artist auction maybe? Another good idea that popped up was releasing DoD best-of collections as pay-what-you-want albums.

I think Patreon would be a better route since it would be a steady-ish stream of money since this is a monthly competition. Maybe having fundraising events to generate interest.

Ditto to all of this, very well put.

I don’t have any input as to the best fund raising method

I have no real stakes in any of this, but that's my thinking.

I like the idea of the DoD pay-what-you-like album on bandcamp.  As long as the album can bring in more than the bandcamp annual fee.....  Also, the album should be a wide range of artists rather than the Snappleman anthology.

If you guys go that route, then maybe do a different type of compliations? Like taking all the first place winners in an album or broken across albums. Artist showcase (like Snappleman) albums. Joke albums. While there are game specific competitions already, have game specific albums including songs from other competitions.

Yess! I'm a fukken BAKKER! Even tho I'm a patron I'm still staff, so I'll see about brainstorming up some ideas for patron content, maybe I'll post partial stems to my DoD songs once in a while, let the patrons take a crack at mixing, or to see how I do my thing, etc.

I wanted to give suggestions for patreon rewards but I can't think of anything. I don't wanna lock stuff like tutorials behind the patreon, that should be accessible to everyone who wants to enter.
