We need a skateboardarra thread! Aside from our own Mikey"Ripquist"456 being a member of the raddest currently existing American crew, Fancy Lad (they coined the term "avant gnar" which is the highest level of thing that a thing can be in my opinion), it's my very favorite spectator sport overall, and I don't even skate. Rodney Mullen will probably be my forever-favorite (which, if he didn't also seem like such a cool guy would probably be too easy an answer):

Load us up with skate vids, opinions, board pics, etc!

I wish I had a better source for this video, but it's actually really hard to find. My favorite skate video ever:

My first post in this thread will be this Jeremy Klein video that is set to the music from Shibibinman 3 for PC Engine. He also has parts with the Ducktales Moon theme, and Konya Wa Hurricane from Bubblegum Crisis

I have one of his decks on one of my cruiser setups. It’s hentai fan art of Lum from Urusei Yatsura. Truly a dude of taste.

I’ve been skating a lot lately, and my rekindled interest is all thanks to Mike456 and Fancy Lad. Bless them all.

Edit: fuck it, adding another short video.

Beagle’s part from Baker Has a Deathwish is remarkable because despite being the filmer for the team, this 12 year old part looks just like 2020 Instagram skating (just without the no comply 180s that everyone loves doing all of a sudden). Truly ahead of the curve. He is also one of the most enjoyable dudes to watch interviews of, if you wanna go down a YouTube hole.

Nah that’s the original audio from Birdhouse’s first video. Jeremy and Tony have some old school gaming cred, you can see a shot of one of their Super Famicoms in Jeremy’s Tracker Stacked part. Also, Tony made this promo video for Lords of Thunder

Thaaaaaat is pretty next-level. My hair is becoming a Zach Morris 'do just by absorbing this knowledge. It's also super rad to be exposed to vintage-relic things that remind us that an American vgm obsession wasn't invented by The Advantage/The Minibosses/The Shizz, but rather those things are all an expression of a burgeoning interest that a lot of people had been experiencing in a collective-consciousness since 1985.

Skateboarding was my life from appx 1998 to 2004. It sucked when all my friends stopped skating because then I did too. I would skate from sun up to sun down and then some. My friend Art and I would get up at 6am to drive to the skate park and have it to ourselves for a bit before the local heshers and kids would come. We made a skate video one year with a bunch of our friends because Art had a real bad camcorder and a cheap VHS to PC interface. It's on YouTube but my part is flagged for copyright because of the music...

This was on constant rotation for a while, the first skate vid I bought with my own hard earned bucks.

CHOMP ON THIS is still one of my favorites. the premise is that it primarily features the camera guys skating instead of filming. lots of good fun but not pro skating, lots of hijinks, lots of eric koston fucking up.

Jump Off a Building is gospel. My friends and I watched it like 3 times a week the whole summer of 98. Musically it was one of the biggest influences for me in my high school years: it got me into early Scorpions which would go on to become some of my favorite music ever, and the Gorguts section was also the first time I got a boner for legit death metal (I don't even know what non-legit death metal would be, I just like the word "legit"). The only more influential vid for me musically was also from Toy Machine: Welcome to Hell, which I first saw when I was only 13, and introduced me to Iron Maiden.

There must be SO much interesting stuff to say/look into with regards to the video production side of skate culture. Like, "skate videos" are such a "thing". Much moreso than videos of any other activity I can think of.

Honestly I probably watched like, 2 skate videos before the modern YouTube age, so I don't really know what I'm talking about: but is it accurate to say skate videos spawned Jackass?

Yeah, no question mark needed there. Johnny Knoxville got his start in a late 90s skate video for Big Brother magazine (produced by future Jackass director Jeff Tremaine) and of course Bam came from Toy Machine.

Woops typo, I actually did mean "is it?". Cool!

Also, I'm sure skate videos started out as... Videos of skating. But it seems like they got to the point where they heavily influenced culture, instead of just reflecting it. I bet some cool parallels could be drawn to gaming + streaming now.

Man, if only I didn't grow up in chicken shit rural area where there was zero smooth paved road, I would have been a sk8r boi. I would literally take my skateboard to the nearest highway a mile away to get some smooth surface, but have to stop every 30 seconds for passing cars.
