Absolutely awesome month! Managed to actually get some reviews done for once
Alien 3, Mega Man 3 - Immortal Love (Team Console)
When I saw the title I was really hoping this would be the Snes version of the Alien 3 soundtrack, that ost is criminally under remixed. Not sure what version of the game this track is from but its very optimistic sounding. I feel like I could fall alseep to this happily. Very relaxing overall. Drums have a nice groove to them. Dist guitar is so classic DOD lol. Could probably have gone for a crunchier tone and that would have fit better, this seems a bit overkill. Regardless playing is pretty good and the mix is well balanced as well. Nice punch to the kick and bass. Guitar playing has lots of feeling towards the end, great use of the whammy bar! Piano and synth is straight up late 90's trance. Nice track!
Chrono Cross - Another World (Team Console)
Emtional song! This could totally be a pop rock hit from the 90's! Male singing was excellent! Female was good too but something felt a bit off, I think the pitching and mixing on her voice could have been better. I think in reality some double tracking and pitch correction would have stepped up the game a lot but that's not to everyones taste. Instrumentally this is pretty good, drums sound a bit mechanical and could have done with more groove overall but there were parts that really worked. Guitar solo was fucking epic and guitars/bass on the whole worked well. All in all, a better mix/edit and more groove to the drums would have made this track shine but as it stands its still really enjoyable. Great effort!
Chrono Cross - Chronopolis - Part I: "The Fate and the Dreamer" (Team Console)
Ambitious track! I've never played the game so I'm not familiar with the source material but this was killer regardless! Transitions were well thought out and the tracks flowed pretty well. It was a bit slow to start with and I think some of the playing was possibly a bit too loose at times which muddied the mix and lessened the impact but nothing too drastic. I do think though that overall the execution felt a bit rushed, possibly just not enough time to iron out all the kinks. Drum parts were good but maybe a bit stiff at times but they were mixed really well and had some really good ideas! Guitars and bass gelled really well together and plenty of definition in the tone and playing. The orchestration was good but I think maybe could have had more time spent picking the right samples/articulation but that takes a lot of experience to get right!Would be super keen to hear this track polished up a bit more with a slightly better mix! All in all, very ambitious and possibly a bit out the comfort zone? but absolute fair fucks for the effort!
Chrono Trigger - A Shot Through Time (Team Console)
DRAMATIC INTRO! Everyone loves a bit of Chrono Trigger, straight off the bat this is pretty heavy. Kick drums are possibly a bit too loud and they seem to be compressing the mix slightly. Snare has a lot of pop to it though! This track moves fast. Nice solo but something was a bit off, not sure what exactly. Not sure I recognise the theme in the middle but transitions seems pretty smooth. Guitar tone and bass tone are hefty, comedy pinchs! Lead guitar playing is pretty good but the pick attach is possibly a bit too much, sounds a bit scratchy at times. Woooo disco outro! Love it! I won!! aaaaand fade out of course.
Comix Zone - KYAAAAAAAA!!!! (Team Console)
Strong MIDI arrangement. Pretty overquantized/programmed but the mix is actually pretty good. Drums are being compressed by the kick a bit too much. Holy shit the guitar playing in the solo is RIDONK, like borderline guitar pro level tight. Some serious playing skills. Arrangementwise this track felt a bit stale and the instrument pallet wasn't too interesting either....also didn't really give me much feels, possibly the source material just wasn't that interesting and that's the source of my qualms? Still though, guitar playing was unreal so massive props for dem skilz.
Crusader of Centy - Tree stumps and inch worms (Team Console)
Ominous intro, loving the disonnance in the beginning of this track. Fuck yeah rock and roll riff. Nice FM synth, something about this track just feels nice. Sounds like a live performance and even though the mix isn't amazing its got good energy! The playing is pretty good overall, guitar solo was top notch. HNNNGGG dat synth solo, actually I really think the synths are taking this track above and beyond for me. Nice chord choices. Nice patch choices. Delicious. I think just overall everyone is holding their own and it just makes for a really cohesive listening experience. A++ would buy again.
Devil May Cry 3 - Demons Don't Cry (Team PC)
Whats that Timmy? There's an organ player down the well having an industrial rave party? Serious Amen Break in this track. Not mad on this style myself but it works well with the source material. Vocals fit really well! Main drums sound a bit....small overall, the programming is fine for the style they could have just done with stronger sample choices. Not really my cup of tea but it hits the mark for what it was going for!
Downwell - Downswell That Ends Well (Team PC)
Straight off the bat guitars are out of time with the drums which is really jarring to my ears. Guitar playing is actually spot on! Is that some chicken pickin I hear?!? Hmmm this track left me feeling confused inside...not entirely sure why, random transitions? The complete lack of any crash cymbals?? Odd choice of drum samples??? ANSWER ME!!
Dune - Spice Up Your Life (Team PC)
Nice intro! Love the swirling synths, not a huge fan of the bell chime on the lead synth it kind of sounds a bit cheap. Wooo sudden drums! I think the drums are slightly behind the beat which feels a bit uncomfortable. Or it could be the synths playing is slightly ahead of the beat. Either way at times something just isn't sitting right. The mix pretty solid over all though. Bass and kick could probably be more glued together. Maybe turning the bass up and using side chain compression would have worked better. Overall this has super nostalgic feel to it which I really like. Some of the synth sounds are reeeeally cool but others are a bit naff/cheap sounding (which I guess kind of sums up the 90's PC era lol) and the timing is a bit distracting but still really cool track!
Final Fantasy 6 - Godspeed You! Mad Kefka (Team Console)
OH GOD 20 MINUTES, here we go. Real drums nice. Nice guitar tone at the beginning. Really pulls you in. This feels very 70's prog to me with that sitaresque intro which is a nice take on this theme. I could meditate to this intro. Booooom drums are in. Yeah this is super classic prog, the mixing has lots of headroom, everything sounds really big open and natural. Nice. Hmm not mad on the bells, they sound too christmasy or something, doesn't really suit the aesthetic. Nice wah guitar on kefkas theme, man this is so fucking primus I love it! I'm expecting les claypool to start babbling like a mad man on top of this! Ugh this groove is perfect. My head is thoroughly bobbing right now. Oooh nice classic sounding keys in the back, not sure what you'd call it but I like it. This track has tons of character which is really refreshing. Love all the effects on the guitars and the drums and bass sound mahusive.mmmmm nice dreamy effect here but again with the christmas bells, maybe I'll warm to them. god this is just so fucking christmasy. KEFKA GET THE FECKIN TURKEY IN THE OVEN!!! Oh my god tamborine, its official. This is like Slade covering Dancing Mad. Nice fade out...oh theres more. Of course theres more. I would say this is where I tap out but this IS dancing mad. DRAMATIC. Nice drumming on this section. Love the classic organ at the end, lovely tone. Man this track is a lot of work. I'll be curious to see whether it was a full band or just one lunatic. Nice snare sound on the droney section, really pops out nicely. Hahaha the *vocals* great impersonation A+ do you know what now that I hear the top end tone of the bass I kind of wished it was turned up for the whole track a bit more. The super lows kind of muddy it up a bit. And we're done. Well I'll say this wasn't entirely my cup of tea but I can definitely appreciate it and the execution was top notch....it was just very long which is of course the nature of the source material. Great job either way!
Final Fantasy - Getting the Shit Kicked Out of You for the Crystals (Team Console)
Ooooh real harp. Delicious. I mean this is absolutely done to death but I'll take real harp any day of the week. BATTLE theme on harp however this is something new. This is gorgeous. Excellent playing. I think my only comments are that it sounds a bit thin but I think to get a better recording would require a pretty expensive microphone setup as boosting the lows on this could sounds a bit boomy. The reverb also has a bit too much top end on it and could probably have done with a slightly longer tail. Excellent track though, well done!
Grand Prix Circuit - GPEGA.EXE (Team PC)
Woo this is a bass heavy mix. A bit overpowering. Playing is pretty solid if not a bit stale sounding. Vibrato on the guitar could do with some work. Fucking wiggle that son of a bitch!! Strong MIDI brass. Drums are actually pretty tastful too, some good programming. Yeah this was good but I wasn't too excited. I think with a bit more confidence on the lead instrument playing it would have gripped me. Think like Joe Satriani, his backing tracks are boring as fuck but his attitude pulls it all together.
Hollow Knight - This is Holloween (Team PC)
Yeah this is my track, nothing to say here. Its amazing. I hired a fully orchestra and choir for this one. Cost me a bomb but no biggie. When I win you can all call me DOD Master 2000. In all seriousness though. This track is epic as fuck. I think the snare is a bit thwacky sounding for my liking, like too much bottom snare or the room mix hasn't been filtered. The cymbals in general seem to have a bit too much top end as well but I think in the context of the mix theres a fucking shit ton going on in the high mids so its justified. Nitpicking aside this fucking rocks. Loads of dynamics, nice song length, I was never bored and my pants are thoroughly creamed. WELL DONE. GOLD STAR.
King's Quest 5 - The House of the Sludge Witch (Team PC)
This is big sounding. Not mad on the snare, its seriously lack bottom end compared to the rest of the mix, could have done with a compressed room mic with the top end and sub freqs filtered out for more body. Real nice rhythm guitar tone and bass tone. Overall this works. Its not overly interesting though, I think in the context of a game/narrative it would hold a lot more weight. lel guitar noise GET A NOISE GATE YA BUM serious though apart from the Snare this sounded very finished.
Kirby's Adventure - Orange Oceans (Team Console)
Nice delay. Guitar is out of tune though. The mix is pretty thin sounding. Sounds like the drums are literally just close mics and nothing else. Bass sounds nice. Guitar sounds a bit pokey and could do with more bottom end. Did you filter all the lows out or something? There's plenty of room for 150 - 200 Hz on the guitars. Yeah I think main port of call here is to invest in some better drum samples and practice mixing them. Or even better grab a premixed sample set like the GGD One Kit Wonder Libraries to skip the bullshit. I like the organ sound but again its weirdly thin sounding without the rest of the mix filling in the blanks. Nice arrangement though!
Mega Man 3 - Get A Weapon (Team Console)
Guitars sound weirdly dull. The playing is solid but theres no definition in the picking because theres like nothing past 3k to my ears. Is this a miced up amp? Possibly the mic position was to close to the edge or you're not using the right mic as I'm not even sure EQ could fix this. Apart from that though the playing was a delight I just wish I could hear it better!
Megazeux - Ascii Adventures (Team PC)
Love the intro synth, really eerie and spacey. Bass playing is really nice, sitting in the pocket, nice muting with the fingers. Drums are a bit weak but its not a deal breaker. Man this weird synth is totally my jam. This is like them old dystopian 80's catalogue music but with a fucking metal twist. Think like Bruton Music Library - Music Machine. Hnngg Queen guitar harmonies are excellent. Guitar playing is super solid as well and nice tone, doesn't hurt the ears but still has a nice sharpness to it. This is pretty classic DOD if you ask me. Kick is compressing the mix a bit too much, could have dialed it back a couple of dB on the low end. Toms are also a bit flubby but they do have body. The synths on this track are doing it for me but they could have done with some vibrato and more pitch bending into notes to add a bit more of a human element. I get the feeling that they were just straight up programmed rather than played. All in all I digged this track. It had flavour and character and the mix was full and interesting. Nice work!
Pilotwings, Gradius 3 - Certified Wings (Team Console)
I'm somewhat digging this, the snare is weirdly distant though. Is there just one guitar? I think it sounds a bit weirdly thin. Like the whole mix is lacking wideness. Maybe this is a live full band mix? That might explain it. Oh there's some wrong notes with the vocals and guitars. Something clashed really hard somewhere. I actually think this could be a killer remix. Its lacking attention to detail, guitars are out of tune, vocals need more work, the mixing is thin, I think the drums probably needed more oomph but as they're live this is a good effort. Yeah I dunno, let more to be desired but the idea was totally there. Synths worked a treat though.
Revival Xanadu 2 - Revival Xanadu 2 (Electric Boogaloo) (Team PC)
YES great mix. Synths and drums are perfectly balanced. The top end on the pulse wave is really smooth. Classic CP700 or whatever it is keyboard sound. Love the pop corn synth in the background. Bass has a nice beverly hills cop thump to it. I think the hihats could have done with more of a 1/16th note groove they're a bit boring at times when the track could have done with more excitement. I actually think if the hihats were played live it would add a ton of depth to the track. Think like Yellow Magic Orchestra - Rydeen played live, it adds a lot of push and pull with a human behind the electric kit. Anyway, I enjoyed this track a lot. It probably just need a bit more syncopation in parts for flavour and excitement.
Sesame Street: Search and Learn Adventures - Probe_and_Unearth (Team PC)
ALL YOU FUCKING PUPPETS I WANNA SEE YOU FORM A FUCKING GAP RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE NOW WHEN I SAY CHARGE I WANT YOU TO FUCKING RUN AT EACH OTHER LIKE THERES A MAN STICKING HIS HAND UP YOUR ASS AND GO FUCKING CRAZY....ahem sorry I don't know what came over me, this is hilarious, in line with Bert and Ernie Go Brutal, look it up and thank me later. 10/10 for comedy.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 - Specialist (Team Console)
Fuck yeah get yer dance on. Classic DOD mixing heavy metal with house beats. This track is pretty fun, kick and bass are probably a bit much but its all good fun. Not entirely my jam, its a bit repetitive and not the most interesting source material. Guitar playing is decent but it just feels out of place overall. Decent.
Spiderman & Venom: Maximum Carnage - Bring on the CARNAGE! (Team Console) My Song
This sounds like some Command and Conquer shit right here. This is hefty, real drums? If so they're recorded really well. Maybe its played with an electric kit? Bit too much boom on the kick for my liking though. Guitars are also a bit too on top of each other. Sounds like they're both down the middle which is weird. Love the wah on the guitars. I think the bass could do with more top end and is generally just a bit muddy sounding. I feel like maybe the mastering on this track messed with the bottom end and turned it up too much then smashed it with the limiter, possibly scooped the mid range too much as well which has thined the guitars out a lot. Cool arrangement though!
Stardew Valley - Fall (Ghost Synth) (Team PC)
Nice synth, woah hefty kick drum. Love the top end slap on it. Weird pairing it with electronic hihats though. Yeah the rest of the drums are very meh. The guitar tone is pretty nice. Something is left to be desired with the arrangement. It all just feels a bit disjointed. Nice toms! yeah something very off with the drum programming, guitars needed double tracking and generally just a bit more confidence in the structure and playing I think. Its not terrible though its just very repetitive. Like it was building up to something but never got there. Things just kind of came in randomally, there was no definition between sections, in fact I'm not sure there was more than one section...
The Elder Scrolls Online - Beauty of Dawn (Team PC)
Nice harp, really nice strings. Yeah this sounds great. Lovely articulation in the strings. This sounds very professional. Not much else to say but really enjoying this. I don't know the source material but I imagine this isn't too much of a change from the original just a lovely recreation with tons of emotion. The only thing that would have really been nice to hear was some percussion, maybe just a bass drum to give it some movement but that's clutching at straws really. Excellent track.
Tintin in Tibet - Kathmandu (Team Console)
Cheeky. Nice bass tone. Fuck yeah this is a great mix. Really grooving. Is that a brass instrument of some sorts? Man I'm super digging this. So quirky and silly. I'm side bobbing like mad. Love the theramin. Infact all the instrumentation is top notch. So much character. Shakers could possibly have had a bit more body they were a bit thin sounding. This is an absolutely stand out track of execution. Top notch.
Tower of Heaven - The Lonely Tower (Team PC)
Nice synth sound. Could with a tiny bit more modulation in the pulse wave I think. Nice drum sound. Guitars slightly out of tune. Also needs a slightly different tone for the lead guitar, they're kind of fighting for space. Hnnngg nice groove in the chorus. Really gets the head moving. Ugh nice drum fill, dats my jam. Oh fuck yeah sax!! Dis some good shit right here. Man this sax is killing it, absolutely incredible tone. Guitar playing in the later half is top notch. Great drum fills man. Could maybe have used some more flams on the snare to add some realism. I also think the kick sounds great but was maybe a bit to 'metal' for the overall sound.
Ultimate Chicken Horse - You'll Always Find Me Waiting (For the Train to Come Through) (Team PC)
Amazing game title. 10 points to griffendore. This is pretty smooth sounding. Drums are leaving a little to be desired though. Nice keys. Great pop in the bass. Love it. This is a real head bobber. I think maybe theres a bit too much low end in the bass compared to the rest of the mix. The drums just aren't cutting through at all despite how clean the mix is. Its still good though, its not suffereing as much because the playing is tight and the source sounds interesting enough. The vocal is pretty quirky! Guitar sounded quite dry but was played well. Nice tune!
Unreal - Prisoner 849 Rides Again (Team PC)
Ominous intro. Really cool sound. Fuck yeah butt rock. Mad compression on the drums. Bass is a bit dull sounding and the guitars are quite top end heavy so theres a bit of a void in the mids. It does sound pretty clean but maybe....too clean. Playing is great though! I think the lead could really have done with some reverb and delay to push it back into the mix, both leads just sound too on top and harsh. Also could have done with some vibrato on certain notes. Nice clean playing! Cleans could do with a bit of sparkle on the top end. Nice track all in all!
