Topics I've Started

I miss this weirdly specific style of 90s art

08 March 2019 - 09:10 AM

I don't know what to call this, but images like this seemed to be everywhere when I was growing up.

I can best describe it as being surreal, very colorful, and with some southwest influence.  I remember it being prominent right before the whole grunge aesthetic took over.  Please share examples and help me gush about something amorphous that has been lost in time.

THE SURFLE JERKS - They Can't All Be Metal

27 October 2018 - 02:10 PM

Frankie Van Hooser (from The Koopas) just released an awesome album of surf VGM covers.  You should listen to it.  It's fucking FUN.

Help me not get murdered in the middle of the US

07 June 2018 - 10:04 AM

Hi all.  As I previously mentioned, I'm relocating from the Bay Area, CA to Pittsburgh, PA later this summer.  I'm starting to setup the actual planning, and am looking to nail down lodging for the trip.  I was thinking of just setting up Air BnBs at various places, but this is also a great opportunity for me to see some shizzies along the way!

So, here's the deal.  I'm leaving Santa Cruz on the morning of July 30, and am looking to arrive in Pittsburgh around August 3 or 4.  I'll be taking I-80 E, heading through northern Nevada, northern Utah, southern Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.  If anyone is along that route and would be willing to let me and a friend (driving buddy) stay the night, I would be very grateful, and would happily compensate you in some way (dinner? beer?)

If you're interested, let me know where you are located and what your availability is and we can go from there.  Thank you in advance, and I'm hoping to get to see some folks that I don't normally get to see!

Here's a link to the route:

UPDATE:

There's been a change of plans and I'm taking the southern route.  I've pretty much got the whole trip covered now, but I really appreciate everyone's responses here!  THANK YOU ALL!!!

Viking Guitar goes east

29 March 2018 - 10:01 AM

It's looking like I'm going to be relocating to Pittsburgh, PA sometime in mid/late July.  The main reason is that California is just too damn expensive.  I've been living month to month working full time + music stuff, and am not getting any closer to my goals, so it's time.  As much as there's some bitterness about not being able to stay in the area I grew up in due to rising costs, I'm looking forward to the new start and new area.

So, why make my own narcissistic post about this?  Well, for a few reasons.

(1) For anyone living in Pittsburgh (or PA in general), I'd love to hear about the city more.  The decision has already been made (barring extreme circumstances) but I still want to get as much info as I can.

(2) If you live on the west coast and have been planning on seeing a Viking Guitar performance, there's only one more scheduled before I leave.  May 3 in San Jose at 418 S Market Street, San Jose (https://www.facebook...boozeanimerock/).  If you can, please come and help send me off.  :-)

(3) Money's going to be a little tight between now and finishing the move.  I'm not one to ask for handouts, so instead, to help raise funds for the move and transition period, I've made all of the Viking Guitar stuff on bandcamp (except Legion and Warpath) PAY WHAT YOU WANT.  If you want to pick up anything and toss a few bucks my way, I'd certainly appreciate it.  http://vikingguitar.bandcamp.com
