#1393664 DoD Pixels Vs Polygons Results, Brevity Month Next

Posted by Funbuns on 10 January 2019 - 04:59 PM

Well that was fun.  I really liked the Katamari Love cover in particular.  As someone who's tried the whole JP to English cover thing several times over, I have mad respectsies for people who pull it off that well.

Anywho, my entry was kind of an odd case for me.  It was mostly an experiment in getting back into playing guitar since I've been out of practice for a long while.  It's also the first completely non-vocal DoD song I've done.  Now that I look back on it though, the arrangement feels kind of minimalist and boring.  I wanted to do more with it, but I wasn't really sure what genre direction I wanted to go in, so it feels too much like a bare bones kind of guitar cover for my liking.  I toyed around with a bunch of ideas, but in the end, most of them just cluttered up the mix of the whole thing way too much.

Oh well.  On a side note, I'm honestly kind of surprised no one had done a single remix of Emiya on DoD before.  That song's almost on par with MM2 Wily Stage 1 in the crazy amount of remixes it's gotten, even in just official material.  (Also didn't think a name like "Shirou" would get that botched in the listening party announcements, but that's whatevsies)

#1385714 Shizz Tattoo Thread

Posted by Funbuns on 22 July 2018 - 05:27 AM

Got a relatively cheap commission a while ago from a tumblr named dailyarturia of myself (left) and Honoka from Love Live! (right) and I ended up getting this on my left upper arm shortly after.  Is simple, but it does hold kind of a comforting meaning for me in context and stuff.  Plus I thought it was cute as hell.

#1377661 What are you watching on netflix?

Posted by Funbuns on 12 February 2018 - 04:02 AM

Watching Fate/Apocrypha, but as much as I really want to like it, the cast is kind of a clusterfuck even by Fate standards and everything about it's really getting hard to give a shit about.

#1377070 DoD Brevity Results, Jun Senoue Month Next

Posted by Funbuns on 03 February 2018 - 08:55 AM

Woo!  Time to reclaim my last place title!

So when you say Jun Senoue Month, does that mean any song from any of the soundtracks he's done composition work for or does it have to specifically say he wrote it in the tags if there was more than one person involved in composing the OST?

i.e. Some of the songs that aren't directly attributed to him (or Crush 40) on the tracklisting of either of the Sonic Adventure OSTs

#1368584 What's the worst thing you've ever spanked\flicked it to?

Posted by Funbuns on 28 September 2017 - 05:57 PM

Hoo boy.  If I had to make a top 5:

-my mom's Victoria's Secret catalogues

-official art of Ruto from OoT in a Nintendo Power (the adult version of her, not the loli one)

-really good yet straightforward artworks of Gundams/Zeon mobile suits

-imagination

-imagination plus Law and Order SVU (the one about particularly messed up sex crimes) going in the background

(in no particular order)

Honorable mention goes to having sex with the Dragon Warrior IV start menu theme on the NES left running on the TV fairly loud.  It's like 15 or 20 seconds long and light and goofy, I'm just surprised it didn't kill, hurt, or even faze the mood is all.

#1366677 DoD Space Month Results, Tornado of Solos Next

Posted by Funbuns on 03 September 2017 - 04:31 AM

Yeah, Demonstray gave you a dumb a shitty review, but look what he wrote about Hat's 1st place entry.  Like, he obviously just wore headphones, turned them up too loud, and then turned the treble way up on his listening EQ, then complained a bunch.  Don't worry about it.

Tru (my listening EQ is usually flat but the rest is basically accurate because I had to listen to these in multiple sittings on a crowded bus on my way home at 6 a.m.)

ALSO have you guys heard my like first...three, four, five...six...seven DoD entries, and onward indefinitely into the present? Good LORD they're painful. So painful that I will make you work just that extra bit to find them, so you will have worked for your own pain. Absolute MIDI nonsense and learning guitar AND recording AND production AND editing on the fly.

So yeah, don't give up just because I shat on your entry. I got at least a couple of last places WITHOUT singing on entries, and the VGM scene (myself included) is especially unkind to non-industry VGM singers. Take it as a challenge: if you manage to get above last place next entry, it'll mean that you're improving much more quickly than I am. Even if you don't get above last place in the next 3 or 4 entries, you've gotta consider the handicap built into your entries. Your entry isn't "bad -x.x", it's "average -x.x, subtracting people's personal preferences", or "below average -x.x etc", which are arbitrary to begin with but starting points nonetheless.

Anyway, onward to actual constructive advice: I noticed huge improvements in the confidence of your voice between your DMC3 entry and this one, and the audible confidence has in turn improved the overall quality of your voice significantly. Keep that up! Three things I'd like you to keep an eye on: pitch, timing, and dynamics. You've got a great knack for vibrato, so try to keep in that groove while you improve on these other things. With regards to your pitch, it's off by enough here and there that it does become more than just a nitpick, but you'll be glad to know that you succeed in making it known to the listener just what notes you were going for, so you're already on the right track. I'd say part of the pitch problem stems from the dynamics issue, but I'll talk about that in a sec. Your timing is good for the most part, with the occasional struggle to get the right part of the syllable out on time (words like "sight" feel like the S lands on beat and the I lags behind when it should be the one emphasized, for example), but that's my only complaint there. Now, with dynamics, I notice a desire to stick with a certain sound in your voice, kind of a grungy but strong output, which works well mostly! The problem is that sometimes when you shift or slide between notes, you lose some of the strength and it comes across a bit awkwardly, as well as occasionally losing ground both dynamically and musically when you sustain notes or try to end words. What might help would be to experiment with STARTING the notes with that same strength, but loosening up a bit in the middle of most words. Dropping some of the grit and weight in your voice, and just letting the air carry your voice until the end of the stanza. I wish I could say something that makes more sense, but for some reason that sounds right to me.

If you have more questions, or if something I've said makes no sense and you'd like me to elaborate, go ahead and shoot me a message or reply here, either way I'll respond! I'm no good as a singer, but I've learned some neat tricks that I'd like to put into practice someday!

Oh jeez, I forget about the DoD version of that DMC3 song being a thing sometimes, my god, that was terrible!  I ended up going back last year and re-recording the entirety of the vocal tracks and the version I put on my youtube ended up actually being one of the more popular pieces on there.  Granted I wouldn't necessarily call most of it conventionally good singing so much as fudging about stylistically until something just sort of subjectively worked in context.

Either way, it's kind of relieving to look back on that sort of thing and remember I've at least made some progress over the years.  But I do appreciate the genuine advice and stuff.  I'm actually starting up vocal lessons again in a couple days after a fairly long hiatus from it, so hopefully that'll do me some good.

EDIT: Also sorrys if I kinda de-railed the thread just a liiiiittle bit.  I be outies now...

I dunno about all that.  I just kinda get all super discouraged real easily at times.  Comes with the abundant joys of clinical depression.

Still dragging my ass through college though, and classes start in a few days, so I was likely gonna need a break from this stuff, or at least Dwelling of Duels regardless.

Sorry about all the fuss and muss.  I'm just gonna take a step back, continue my vocal training, maybe muck about on here a bit once in a while anyways, play some vidya games, and make music just because.  That sounds nice, going with that.

Oh yeah, also, pingosimon, you did remind me of something very important. xD

#1366488 Shizz Coming Out Thread

Posted by Funbuns on 31 August 2017 - 05:02 PM

I dunno, only reason I had the name in the first place was partly I always assumed it was mostly meant to refer to excessively girly anime boys and stuff, not genuine trans folks.  That and it was a pun off of the name of an in-house Mega Man ZX remix.

Unfortunately, it'd be a hell of a task to try to retroactively retag all my songs' artist tags all across the internet, so that's still a bit of a thing for the moment.

Also yes, the implications did start making me a little uncomfortable using it.

#1366376 Shizz Coming Out Thread

Posted by Funbuns on 31 August 2017 - 12:32 AM

Well I can't say I'm really even all that familiar with all/any you guys yet, but a thread's a thread, so might as well get this out of the way, assuming it wasn't obvious.

I'm a transgender girl.  Preferred name Nikki, preferred pronouns she/her etc.

Came out to my family a few years ago, which was pretty much a mess and a half of an experience in itself, but my mom's at least gotten to the point of sort of accepting it, though it still feels like she kind of has it etched into her brain to think of me as her son.  Thankfully my boyfriends (more on the plural of that if you care to ask) one of whom I've been with since before coming out, have been extremely kind and supportive about it.

I've been transitioning on hormone therapy and openly living as such for at least a year now, and depending on who you ask, I actually manage to pass for plain old cis female pretty well.  Besides being oversensitive about my bra size, I've come to be a lot more...I dunno...happy.

Not saying I've never been happy in the broad sense of the word or anything, just that there had always been something bothering me in the back of my head that I was too scared to deal with for most of my life.  I started to find a bit of comfort when I'd dress up in girly outfits for Halloween or cosplay as female characters at conventions and stuff, but it also sort of helped bring those sort of lingering feelings to the forefront of my thoughts til I eventually broke down and admitted it to myself.  I'm a woman, and I'm happy with it, and that's that.

Doing a lot of singing's a bitch though.  I'm not very good at guitar, so damn near everything of mine on DoD (formerly Trap Fanatic, changed the name here cause...reasons) along with a bunch of other songs I've done, have my voice in them, and I always think I sound like a teenage boy.  I just tend to get all weird about worrying it'll lead to misunderstandings and people might just assume I'm some guy hiding behind a cute girly anime avatar or something.

Been trying to be more upfront about all that though, hence posting this little tale at 3am, insomnia aside.

I'm also bi, but I don't feel like going into the details of just how much of a bitch my mother was with me coming out about that at the time, hoo boy, that's a whole other story.

#1366085 DoD Space Month Entries and Voting

Posted by Funbuns on 29 August 2017 - 07:37 AM

Also reviewsies, cause why not

Astro Warrior - Space Pretzel Armada
Kinda neat power metal-ish song, even if really short to the point it almost felt kind of unfinished.  Still pretty cool though, I really liked the synthy stuff at the beginning, and the harpsichord stuff in the background is a nice touch.

Super Mario Galaxy - Adventures in Battlerock
Not entirely sure how to feel about this one.  This song also feels really short to a fault, but I really like the first 1:20 or 1:30 or so when it sounds all like some bullfight or Spanish opera kind of thing.  After that, it starts to feel more jazzy but generic by comparison.  Either way, I respect it for further breaking the straight metal guitar cover mold that seems like it tends to take up the top spots a lot.

Mega Man 9 - Galaxily Lounging Around
Pretty much exactly what I expected from the title.  Seemed really, really straightforward aside from the lounge schtick, like it could've used a slight bit more deviation from the source melody here and there is all.  Not like OCR levels of half the arrangement being unrecognizable, just something to differentiate it a little more besides genre on its own.  It's not even particularly badly executed otherwise, just kind of boring.

Mega Man 9 - Interstellar Man
Good stuff.  Kinda standard medley arrangement going though, kinda detracts from having as much of a natural flow to the whole thing.  That aside, well-executed, and I still like the funky vibe you'd expect from a clusterfuck of space-themed Robot Master songs.

Mega Man Zero 4 - Holding Out for a Zero
I have to agree with tibone on this being straight up anime.  Like Inital D and Gundam Seed made fuck and a Mega Man Zero anime sprung into existence with this for the 4th opening song.  Anyway, the bass seems a bit too subdued, the drums could use a bit more kick to them, and the overall instrumentation seems kinda lacking and barebones in places. I feel like there could've been more ornamentation and stuff around the vocal parts, they're left feeling a little dry at times.

Ristar - Ristar
Huh.  I was kind of expecting stoner rock or some Black Sabbath-ish king of thing from the first few seconds, but it ended up being more of a plain old Ristar guitar cover.  That weird repeating double kick on the drums feels a little jarring at first, but it passes in time, and the guitar work's really smooth.  I likesies.

Tyrian - Journey into Space
I'm torn on this one.  It's the kind of thing I'd think I'd like in theory, but I honestly found it kinda bland.  The arrangement seemed like it got kind of repetitive, though it did have some nice leads thrown in to break up the monotony.  Not much wrong I could spot on a technical level, but I just kinda don't like it as much as I should.  8-bit rendition at the end was a nice touch though.  Kind of unnecessary.  But nice.

#1365967 What games are you playing now?

Posted by Funbuns on 28 August 2017 - 09:49 AM

Dark Souls III has been my go-to console game for a while.  Been playing a lot more now that I'm starting to get a feel for it.  Picking up where I left off on Mega Man ZX Advent since I never finished it for whatever reason.  Love Live! for idle dicking about on mobile.

And I guess Fate/Stay Night if Visual Novels count.

#1365944 Anime

Posted by Funbuns on 28 August 2017 - 06:58 AM

I'm just starting to delve into the Fate series, and I gotta say it is a REALLY mixed bag.

Fate/Zero turned out to be an ok series, it just felt like it had very few genuinely likeable characters outside of the whole dynamic between Rider and Waver.  Those two were pretty much the most fun part of the show.  Caster and crazy homicidal kid I kinda forgot his name were weirdly entertaining too.  Almost everybody else kinda seems either a bit bland or a complete asshole to a ridiculous degree.  Good action stuffs though, and still an interesting enough watch.

Also Kiritsugu may be a dick, particularly to Saber (goddamn, especially to Saber) but he does have his moments of being kinda cool with his whole "bring a gun to a magic fight" ethic.

Also also most boring first episode ever, holy shit.

Reserving judgment on the franchise for the most part, at least until I finish the Fate/Stay Night VN and watch the Unlimited Blade Works adaptation.
