About Me

"... simply comparing the present unfavourably with the past is not nostalgic in any culpable way. It is the tendency to falsely overestimate the past that makes nostalgia egregious: but, one of the lessons of Andy Beckett's superb When The Lights Went Out is that, in many ways, we falsely underestimate a period like the 70s (Beckett in effect shows that capitalist realism was built on a myth-monstering of the decade). Conversely, we are induced - by ubiquitous PR, whose blank, joyless positivity has a crushingly depressing effect, even though (or rather precisely because) no-one believes it at the level of content - into falsely overestimating the present. The Caretaker's Theoretically Pure Anterograde Amnesia echoes Jameson's remarks on postmodernity : it is precisely the failure of historical awareness - under pressure from a cyberblitzing blip time that has no long term memory - that leads to the rise of nostalgia. Those who can't remember the past are condemned to have it resold to them forever.
But I say with total confidence that the decade we've just lived through will be recognised - and not in the far distant future, but very soon - as the worst period for (popular) culture since the 1950s: a decadent, despondent dead zone in which conformity was rebranded - in the media's lickspittle jester prattle - as 'light, upbeat, irreverent'."

I got about 11,000 points on my first go. Pretty good considering they were all places I've never visited (one in Cuba and the rest in North America)!

Capcom Arcade Cabinet

There's not much information at this point, but here's what we know so far:
- It will focus on 80s titles. (Hopefully this doesn't imply exclusivity - I'd like to see some CPS2 stuff!)
- Black Tiger will be the first game. (Ace!)
- 1942, Commando, Gunsmoke and Trojan have been hinted at but not announced.
- The games are straight ROM dumps, essentially - no bugs removed.
- The games have lots of configuration options. It's not currently clear if these are just the original dip switches or if there's more involved. App supports arcade sticks (I take this to mean optimised control layouts), turbo pads and whatnot.
- Games should be 'really cheap' and may come in bundles.
- Game line up will be announced on the 7th of Feb. We'll also get an idea of when to expect each game.

Just a quick note: everything is running fine apart from Night Slashers and Dynamite Cop, which seem to be completely broken. The only others that have a slight problem are Mutation Nation and the Sengoku games. They work perfectly well, but as some file in the BIOS is "the wrong length", they don't show up in the 'Available' list, so you'll have to access them from 'All Games', at least until I find a version of the BIOS with the right file. (You can search 'All Games' more easily with CTRL+F.)
I use ShmupMAME, but I've included a couple of other versions (use whichever you want, really - you only need to hang onto the ROMs folder). If anyone hasn't used MAME before, let me know and I'll post a quick guide.
Edit: bloody typically, I missed a couple I wanted to include - 64th Street and Violent Storm. I've uploaded them here (alternatively, here). Also, Night Slashers works fine in other versions of MAME - just not ShmupMAME.
