i'm going to san diego in a couple of weeks (for a couple of days)....i need some ideas on stuff to do, places to go, etc.
i'm aware of balboa park & the casbah, but that's about it.

go to sunset cliffs. and to la jolla to see the seals.
and eat at the cheese shop downtown.

well, like you said, Balboa Park is gorgeous,
and on Tuesday's they have free admission to select museums,
(it's different every week), as well as the botanical gardens.
It's a sin to not go to the famous San Diego Zoo if you're here, unless the
zoo is not your type of thing, of course.
Sea World is awesome and ridiculously overpriced.
Sunset Cliffs, as larah said, in Ocean Beach, is definitely one of the most
beautiful areas in San Deigo, especially at sunset (obviously, looking at the name )
Pacific Beach is a a good spot to check out, but the people who live there are annoying. There's lots of shopping in that area, if you're into that.
Hillcrest/North Park is one of my favorite areas in San Diego, and it's really close to Balboa Park, so if you're there, its worth looking around.
If you're downtown, be sure to check out the architecture of Horton Plaza- it's an outdoor mall inspired by MC Escher.
La Jolla has some of the most beautiful secluded beaches in California, but you have to hike to them. And once again, like larah said, go see the seals at Seal Beach

If you're visiting you have to hit the beach at some point. Coronado has beautiful beach.
All the above suggestions are great.. I like the Aquarium.
Music venues depend on when you show up and what you're into.. I love Scolari's for a free show. Think Emerald Lounge with no smoke and more puke.

I generally just work.
