So I'm going on a ride along with the Phoenix Fire Department this Friday. Has anyone done this kind of thing? Just wondering what to expect.

Missouri's number one import? Whiskey. Missouri's number one export? Sadness...

They don't like it when you smoke, or ask to drive the truck.

I did a couple of police ride alongs when I was younger. Once in Mexico, I didn't have much say in the matter and the machine guns convinced me that it was in my best interest. I always complain that I am too tall to sit in "coach" but I am really too tall to comfortably sit handcuffed in the back of a police car.

Once in Mesa by choice, and it was pretty "quiet" that night. I had told the officer about my dad being a cop in Detroit and some of his stories so this guy was just looking for an excuse to bust someones head open the rest of the night.

i've never been, but my dad volunteers with the FD a lot and does a lot of "ride along" type activities. he's got some bizarro stories. mostly because people are fucking crazy.

what prompted you to go on a ride-along?

Emperors of Japan
Myspace

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

I'm going to school to get my EMT certification next semester. In the meantime, I'm taking an english class and I have to write an observational paper. I figured that it would be a good idea to do a ride along and see just what I'm getting into. And Mike, that your dad was a cop in Detroit and lived to tell about it is commendable. Here, Here!

Too much information alert!!!! That's just a small piece of it. Out of high school, he joined the Marines to avoid the draft, then he was sent home early from Vietnam after getting 3 Purple Hearts (3 purple hearts?!?! For those war historians out there, he collected the last two in Hue just after the "Tet Offensive"). When he got back he started college and got into a shouting match with some "hippie" professor at Wayne State the first week there and signed up with a Detroit Police recruiter on campus as he stormed out of the classroom. We can't even begin to understand the kind of scary shithole Detroit was in the late 60's through the 80's, especially for a cop.

Sorry to ramble. If you think I never shut up, buy my old man a couple of Vodka/Tonics sometime and make yourself comfortable. :)

KCMO, good luck with the EMT studies.

I can relate. My dad was a cop just outside of K.C. He started the job in the early sixties. He's told me stories about being around K.C. when the Watts riots were going on out in L.A. I'm sure your father and mine could fill a novel. Oh, and I bet my dad could put your dad in an arm-bar. HAHA!

I did a ridealong with the Peoria Fire Department the day after Thanksgiving a couple years ago. Unfortunately nothing happened. They called it "rider's curse." We went grocery shopping, ate huge meals and I got a chance to try on all their gear. I looked rather ridiculous. We went out on a couple calls that turned out to be nothing. But it was a fun day. Hopefully something will happen when you do your ridealong Scott.

When he got back he started college and got into a shouting match with some "hippie" professor

i was failed by a vietnam vet who was my history proffesor, the first and only class i failed. i went to talk to him about my 69.3% (anything below 70 percent was failing) and he had no sympathy for me

i can't help but think it's because his legs were blown off in the war,

either that or i just didn't apply myself

All the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.

My good friend's dad is high up in the Phoenix Fire Department. Knowing him comes with perks--we get to play in golf tournaments in his place etc.

About 8 years ago there was a vote on some proposition that the Firefighters union opposed. So my friend's dad paid us to drive around the city at night and take down all the signs supporting the proposition. Heh heh. Breakin' the law.

By the way, don't forget to vote in favor of all 7 propositions on the ballot coming up.

When I was an angy, anti-cop punk-rock 16-year old, my dad got arrested and the cops came to our house to arrest him. They were questioning me about what happened, and I kept asking them questions like "You're not one of those RACIST cops, are you?" One of the cops kind of understood what I was getting at and invited me on a ride-along to show how un-racist they are, but I never went.
