I love burgers. I will stop in.

Plus, everyone should go see THE FALL. GO GO GO.

Show your continued support this weekend by catching The Fall at The Brickhouse Theater. Grab a burger... drink a beer.

I knew that bars had to sell a certain amount of food in order to be a bar, but I mean really, what are we talking about here? Not about a venue losing money and about to go out of business, but a venue making money, just not enough of it selling solid consumables instead of liquid consumables. BULLSHIT!! Shame on you, City of Phoenix.

This is the same reason why the place on University right across from ASU keeps going out of business. First it was Dos Gringos, then Flip Flopz, then Daisy Dukes, now Mamacita's Cantina...all within the last couple of years. They're right across the street from a church so they have to sell like 80% food 20% alcohol or some insane shit like that. When the real reason why it is there is so ASU kids can go get tanked in between classes.

Those first two must have been waaay before my time. I was under the impression that Dos Gringos had been there a long time.

Same with the Brickhouse.

***VERY long message alert***

i pretty much have the same opinion as donald. cole and his business partner kevin were all about music and had some pretty amazing shows when they ran the place. they encouraged local bands to play there even if they lost money on any given night just because they had the hopes of people hearing about what a cool venue that place is to host bands and eventually start drawing a bigger crowd.

i saw talib kweli, jimmy eat world, bionic jive, pinback, the album leaf, and the advantage just to name a few.

shizz band night actually originated there (donald correct me if i'm wrong). the last band i was in played quite a few of these shows along with bella, budget sinatra, batter the drag, fatigo, etc. etc. to sometimes 5 people, but cole kept it going. he kept thinking of ways to get people to come out, with different activites, games, live grafitti artists, movies on old projection screens etc. etc. i always remember him asking me what i would want out of a show, "do you think it would be cool if we did this?" "do you think people will like that?" whatever it was, he put a lot of work into trying to make it "happen" so to speak. he knew he had to make money eventually, but it just never really happened. consequently, this is part of the reason he left. money. the new guy kind of bought him out for not being able to pay rent. this is what i was told by a bar keep i talked to regularly, during that time. she ended up leaving as well. it's all heresay, but that's my take.

i played one show under the new management and have not been back there since.

i think it would help the brickhouse draw more people if they weren't the last establishment on that block. there needs to be some more develepment around that area. that's not their call though. they can't just rely on sporting events. even with sporting events, it's pretty damn hard to get business when you have jackson's AND cooper's town on the same block drawing peoples attention before they can even GET to the brickhouse.

roger is a pretty cool guy.
from what i've heard talking to him, he's all about downtown/music/artistry/scene etc.
and, from what i can tell, he's involved (though not on the shizz)

i'd spoken to him awhile back and he kind of told me what it actually takes to run that place.
staggering.
he'd had plans to host more local shows, but i haven't seen that happen yet.
and, to use the venue to host your own night is financially risky for a single band
to take on. at least in my opinion.
i'd say, give him a chance by patronizing him for a week or so,
by showing our support in him and his venue, it could be good for all involved in a
"support local businesses" kind of way.

how many of us work downtown?
maybe we could get some lunches together in the next couple of days
i heard he has specials.
we speak of support.
let's show it. politics the same or not.

i'll go tomorrow (5-4-06), maybe friday too.

who's with me?
